First Round Trade

My 1st thought about this trade was, "about time!!"

I don't mind trading up or trading down, moving around to get the players you want. But it's got to be done with an eye on the future.

Every draft we need to have added future picks to the kitty. The way Nick's been doing it feels like we end up with a deficit. I know that's not the case with the plethora of 6th & 7th round picks we seem to always have & never draft in the 6th & 7th rounds.

But let this be the start of "always" having multiple 2nd, 3rd, & 4th round picks.

Maybe the guy they were looking at at 1.23 will be available at 2.42? Seriously, the Texans are looking at a range of players. You can't fall in love with a player that far down the draft board, because he could be gone a pick ahead.

Very much true. I don't know. Just trying to understand what the reason could be. I would rather deal on draft day to sell to a team who actually wants someone at 23.

We will need rookie scale deals as we start paying our homegrown talent. Nico. Harris. Stingley. Stroud. WAJ. Tank. Adding future 2nds, 3rds, and 4ths are critical for team building in the next 2-3 years. Those rookie scale deals will be imperative to field a team.

Minnesota definitely initiated this deal... We liked the value.. I am sure the pick 188 we got from them was to aid Nick in being able to move around in the 2nd more easily, as needed.

I’m really starting to suspect that Nick will use next years first to move back into round 1 if one of a few select players drop past say 25 or so

.....I don't want Diggs on this team. Something is up with that guy. I feel like he's a cancer. Not sure what the deal is but rubs me the wrong way how his career has unfolded this far. Think we can do better.

Stefon. Sources online and in real life. Nothing done but lots of fire with the smoke.
Are the sources online an old tweet suggesting Diggs goes to the Texans, and the real life sources a bunch of fat old coworkers spreading rumors around the water cooler? :spin:

I agree on Diggs. We should be done bringing in anymore vets that are older than 27. I think at this point, it's the time to bring youth into the club. First to develop behind vets, second to provide depth, and third to take their place as starters when the time comes.

I was hoping that's what we would do at pick 23.

I don’t get into this draft value mumbo jumbo. What it says to me is that either NC and the FO don’t think there’s a huge difference between the 1st round talent and the 2nd round talent available this year…. or that this draft is so deep in the areas they want to attack that they’ll be fine sliding out of the 1st round b/c they’re confident someone they like is gonna be there at 42….OR that they may have plans to use that extra 2nd to perhaps move up in this year or next year’s draft. either way, I like the idea of picking up an extra high pick next year. Sounds like a plan to me.
Yep! If anyone do a basic draft simulation, they will see alot of day 1 starters sitting there. there is a high probability that Sweat, Ruke or Fiske will be there as well as a slew of wrs, safeties, rbs also. Posters act like the team doesn't have dts, which they do.

All the good Nick Caserio did only to do this last puzzling trade down. Should we be optimistic none less? Is there a method to Caserios madness?

You actually think he’s done yet? The the way I see it, is it Nick doesn’t see much change in value between 20 and 40. So why be at the top end? You think with the way he conducted the draft last year, would allow him a little breathing room. Let him cook.

well the Patriots way: always trade down in the draft and get more picks. After the first couple of picks the draft is a lottery and having more picks is better than having higher picks. Plus for a Super Bowl team you need to fill out the roster with players on rookie scale contracts. I just would have loved to get another second this year - with us taking a dt , wr and cb early…

I'm sure Texans would have wanted that too - which makes me think Nick has something in mind.
Perhaps the extra 2nd was enough for him, or he is confident in his plan to improve the team this year.

I realize getting more picks is a good thing but wouldn't it have been better to wait to make the draft trades involving picks till the draft itself takes place?

I have no idea how easy it is to trade down in the draft - as in are these kind of deals rare or can you basically always trade down for equal value? If you always get these offers I am with you and would have waited. If it is really hard to get fair trade down deals I am ok with doing the trade a month in advance.

Makes me think he has more plans for FA.

Mason just restructured, they gained some money moving from having to pay pick 23 to now 42. Can still cut Woods to make room. There is wiggle room being made.

If Barnett and Nelson are re-signed that would plug a couple holes at a value cost I suspect. DE rotation would be pretty well set and outside CB would be set for this season.

You’re right. Trading back up into the first would not make sense. But moving up in the second? I could see him doing that. I can also see him moving further back down..
After the trade with the Vikings, the Texans are 28th in the league in 2024 draft capital. They lack the "juice" to make any significant moves up the draft board. In the two previous drafts, the Texans were at or among the top in draft capital and Caserio was able to take advantage of that. This is a different year and calls for a very different draft approach.

But don't forget his draft three years ago when he had NOTHING to work with and he still landed Nico Collins, Roy Lopez, and (granted, didn't end up great) Davis Mills. Brevin Jordan might still develop into something as well.

This is exactly how I feel.

When draft night hits this year some fans will bemoan it.

When the draft comes around next year he'll be proclaimed a genius.
There are those of us in the middle, at least I don't think I'm the only one. Presently, I don't hate it, I don't love it. Next year when the Texans use the pick for someone I really like, I'll feel better about the trade. Of course I will. If they draft a guy that by every metric possible was picked two or more rounds before he "should" have been my feelings about the trade are going to be very different.

People will feel how they feel. If people hate this trade, I don't feel like their wrong in feeling that way. It's not something I need to comment on.

Good question. I don't recall pre-draft trades of this magnitude (that hadn't involved current NFL players) happening much.

The one thing I'm taking away from the last couple of years is that it seems Caserio is very well connected and respected by other GM's around the league.

Yes, last time I looked there were a couple of good CBs and Ss, but they would have eaten up our available cap.
They could make enough room by cutting Woods and with the room on the cap sign Simmons. Or at least bring Diggs home.

The Nico Collins deal had Nick moving up 20 spots from the 4th round into the third. Of course, Caserio could have stood pat and taken Amon St. Brown where the Texans were. Trading up is often hit or miss or more often just insignificant. Occasionally it's impactful, like the Anderson trade last year. We've been conditioned to expect a big splash in the draft. The facts (draft capital in hand) suggest that's unlikely this time around.

Being on the keeping it real train is never popular.

Without getting into the granular my details were coming from player side representatives. Agents may be playing games I am unaware of but the call I received was specific in there being open dialogue and the thought something was moving towards finality. That source may have been lied to / gaslit as well. We will see.
