2024 Texans off season

Speaking of Achane… the biggest need for this offense is a RB who can create explosive (20+ yard) plays.

Singletary has had five games with atleast one explosive play in 18 games. Pierce has had two games with atleast one in 14 games…

Achane has had six with atleast one in 11 games.

Who is the best Achane clone in this draft? Bucky Irving? He had six games with atleast one explosive play in 14 games played.

That pick 85 is the perfect range to get a guy like Irving who you can give 10 touches a game to with the hope they make a momentum altering play.

Or if you covet a guy like Trey Benson with a more premium pick. Eight games (!!) with an explosive play in 13 games!

Texans are in second or third and long? Or pushed back by an untimely false start penalty? Send in the big play specialist to fix that!

I’d be okay with that plan. With a full offseason under DeMeco Barnett could become a quality starter. I’m happy for JG, but I don’t want to pay him $15m/yr.
It's the price you pay for a decent rusher.
If you want his type of production from a rookie, he'll have to be one of the top ones in the draft.
That or you spend that type of money to bring in another FA so taking a shot on a top prospect in the draft makes monetary sense.

I understand it’s the price you pay. I’d be more than willing to pay it, but I’d just love more than 1 year of being mostly healthy.

I would do what's in your last sentence or tag Greenard.

Tag him and you will probably pay 20 mil for one yr. This is the way I would go this offseason. I'm definitely bringing back Barnett and Sanders though.

Irving, Wright, Corum should be available around this spot. I think Benson will be gone, who I really hope is available at 3-85 is Braelon Allen. I see him as a lot like Jonathan Taylor and he's young too. Singletary, Allen, and a guy like Carson Steele or Frank Gore Jr in the 7th would be a dynamic RB room.

Or you extend Derek Barnett for less than Greenard
Yep, a case can be made for signing Barnett letting Greenard walk and using that 15 -20 mil to fill in the rest of the holes and draft a DE in rds 1-3.

Example- the Rams drafted Byron Young in the 3rd and he's been very productive for them. Would you rather

1. Re-sign Greenard at 4 yrs 75 mil or tag him 1 yr 20 mil.
2. Let JG walk and use that money plus another 5 mil or so per yr to bring in Banks/Hunter or a IDL like Wilkins?
3. Let JG walk use his money to fill other holes on the team, re-sign Barnett and draft a guy like Chop Robinson at 1-23 or Darrius Robinson Edge Missouri in rd 3?

I’d really love to know Horton’s status next season before making a decision.

I'ma gonna chime in here - #1.
Bralen Trice is likely gonna be there at #23, maybe even Chop - can't have enough pass rush right?

Although I'm a big JG fan, I'm not massively opposed to 2 or 3, but there's a huge assumption that we hit on that pick. We know what we've got with Greenard. Going to be a tricky off-season managing the cap, but Casario has earned some trust, especially the way he's taken on re-treads this season to impressive effect

Barnett/Chop/If Horton makes it back as TRJ brought up makes me feel ok about letting JG walk. Gotta know about Horton 1st though.

If you go this route you could sign a guy like Ridley or Pittman in FA along with Al- Shaairr and S of your choice in FA.(Winfield) This would also mean bringing back Rankins. It also would open up the rest of the draft to go BPA.

Fair. Did any word come out on Horton? Some mystery personal health issue was the last I recall hearing.

We do not have to take an edge rusher at 23. There are others that can be had later such as Jonah Ellis and Braswell.

Agreed, but if you let JG walk then you really need a top pass rusher to replace him. I dont know how well Trice's game translates to the NFL, but he plays hard every down and I think he's a Ryans type of guy.

FA/ draft if you let JG walk.

Winfield/Ridley/Al Shaair

1. Chop Robinson DE Ohio St.
2. Ennis Rakestraw CB Missouri
3. Bucky Irving RB Oregon
4. McKinley Jackson DT Texas A&M
4. Dallin Holker TE Colorado St.

I like Braswell from Alabama and Noah Ellis as well. I mean Jonah. I keep getting those Old Testament guys mixed up.

Jaylen Wright Tenn. is very much on my radar.
Very intriguing prospect who could possibly slip into UDFA territory, but I wouldn't bank on it - I think he is now on most teams radar, so I would take him with our 5th to make sure you get him. Besides, our RB corp could do with some competition.
I didn’t think we had a 5th round pick.

I’d select him with one of the two RD4 picks. I think he could very well be worth one of those picks.

They dont have a 5th.

Off season needs :-
Offense.
I think Texans will part ways with Dalton Schultz as doing so will free up $11m. So now, do we go for one in the draft, or FA? I tend to favor FA here as TE's are a dual role piece and a proven one in that capacity would be optimal.
You could try for Ja'Tavion Sanders in the draft as option 2 in round 2. Cade Stover is also on my radar - dual role piece who would relish the opportunity to team up with his Buckeye QB buddy.
Our lack of a good running game was exposed by the Ravens so this must be addressed - the oline should be better next season without adding any pieces as we have guys returning off IR, but as someone pointed out, a proven RG would help. Still, Singletary definitely needs a quality helper out there (if he's retained). Trey Benson is the best back in this draft and would be a nice piece to have but will unlikely be there when we pick in the second round.
WR - Nico Collins has emerged as a #1 - not top tier #1, but a #1 nonetheless. Tank Dell is a weapon but for mine, he should be used on specific plays - this will ease the workload on him. Noah Brown is good when healthy but Texans may part ways with him to save on cap space. Robert Woods is handy but getting older and is more of a possession receiver nowadays.
John Metchie may never be the player we had hoped for for whatever reason - I wish the young man well. Xavier Hutchinson is not going to frighten any defenses.
So, this necessitates at least one more prime WR and that is where this draft is most excellent. Any one of the top 8 guys should be an upgrade for us with plenty of potential further down the draft.
Texans should take one of the top 5 guys if one falls to us at #23 and/or another one further down or from FA.
Taking these steps should give us an upgrade on the offense for 2024.
I'll address the defense in another post.

Within reason I'm bringing back Schultz and drafting a guy like Dallin Holken hopefully in the 4th rd. I'm teaching Jordan the H-Back role.

Adding weapons for Stroud should be what this off season is all about, not subtracting weapons to save money. So far we've had suggestions to trade Tunsil and let Schultz walk and I just don't understand this line of thinking, particularly when they have plenty of cap space.

Off season needs:-
Defense.
Demeco Ryans did an incredible job with our defense this season - it seems that ordinary mortals suddenly become pro bowl candidates!
Derek Stingley has finally hit his stride and looks like a lock down Corner and this was probably the biggest plus for this defense when you consider he was the 3rd pick overall in 2022.
Nick Caserio has done a great job for us since coming over from the dark side on both sides of the ball especially on defense. He pulled a ninja coup getting Will Anderson who looks like he is going to be a menace for years to come. And Christian Harris is looking like a real find now too. He also found several nuggets in FA - even well into the season. We won't have the luxury of picking high in the waiver wire this next season so the initial FA period will have to be where he gets aggressive this go round.
Still, I think this defense could benefit with the injection of two key pieces, both being on the Dline - a quality big dude in the middle and another top Edge.
There are a few nice Edge prospects that should be available to us in Jared Verse, Bralen Trice and Chop Robinson - but I do not expect these guys to be quite in the WA category but with the help of some extra push in the middle and having WA on the opposite side they, and Johnathan Greenard, should benefit - and the latter will need to be paid - so, do we keep him? If not, then Edge suddenly becomes a top priority, either in the draft or better, FA.
Good DT's can be found in later rounds but a guy like Jer'Zhan Newton would be nice to have - in the first, but may require a move up to get him and teams typically don't do that with DT's unless he is a slam dunk top 5 pick.
T'Vondre Sweat could be had with our second with perhaps a small move up.
Safety is another area we could look at but not a high priority unless we move away from Jimmy Ward - a distinct possibility. There are a couple of nice prospects in the draft in Calen Bullock and Kamren Kinchens, in the second round.
Steven Nelson has done a great job for us also this year, but do Texans keep him? If not, the CB also becomes a need. Kalen King and Koolaid McKinstry could also be targets if so.
The defense is a complicated animal requiring intimate knowledge of all the scheme nuances so it will be interesting to see how FO approaches it - I know Demeco will have his way - in him I trust.

I understand Schultz is a nice piece but he does have concentration issues occasionally catching the ball, either that or his catching can sometimes leave something to be desired.
He has done pretty well for us this season so I would not be disappointed if we retain him.

We need to draft LT, RB, WR, TE and some OL depth. I want another Duane Brown on this team. 🤣

In FA I am looking at value. Sure we can throw more money at the OL, it hasn’t worked yet but maybe it’ll work next year. Whether due to injury or who they hitched their bank trucks to (Tunsil, Mason, Howard) it is not a dominant OL.

But what we can do is bring in a difference maker at RB. Someone who can create in spite of the OL. If this offense is intent on running the ball no matter the production then get the best RB you can. I am targeting Derrick Henry. 1-2 year deal and sell him on the idea he can win a ring on a contender in the backend of his career.

He’ll cost less than a top tier OL and have more impact next season. Draft another horse on day 2 to be his apprentice.

There is no player in FA that will make a bigger difference to this team’s win total than Derrick Henry. Except Chris Jones for 2x the price/year. And you add a back like Benson or Irving on day 2 that is the lightning to his thunder you keep Henry fresh for when you need to feed him on a cold, windy day at M&T or Arrowhead in January.

All guys drop some throws.

Look at Kittle yesterday.

You want to go the RB route in FA bring in Jacobs or Barkley. I would look at bringing in AJ Dillon and drafting a guy in the 3rd or 4th rd I I went RB in FA.

Like I said earlier, I've been very impressed with Jordan Morgan OT Arizona if Howard can't make it back. Maybe even if he does make it back

Defensively:

I am happy with Christian Harris’ development. I think we began to see signs of what he will be like all next season in the last few games. A true stud LB. Same with Cashman. I am happy with this duo as the top two LBs. Sure we could make a run at another LB as well but I would like to spend elsewhere and these guys are plenty athletic to do what must be done.

I’d let Perryman walk and To’o To’o can compete with another draft pick for his snaps. I trust DeMeco can develop LBs and want to take advantage of this instead of allocating significant $ to the position.

Need upgrades in the secondary. Nelson is a perfect CB2 but I am not paying a CB going into his 10th season significant money. And I am betting the rest of the league agrees. Either he begrudgingly takes a team-friendly deal or he walks.

Both safeties need upgrading. Ward cannot be trusted to stay healthy and Pitre did not appear to be a scheme fit. Hopefully it was a sophomore slump for Pitre but regardless I’d love to add one of the best safeties in the draft like Kamren Kinchens who has Jessie Bates upside. Kinchens would replace Ward’s role in the defense but they need to find someone to compete with Pitre this offseason. He did not make nearly enough plays to be as undisciplined as he was…

Also could use an upgrade at nickel CB. King is solid but that is not good enough if you want to play in February. I am not up to date on the options but would love a Brian Branch type player to be available someway somehow.

DL i’d love to get Greenard back and have him grow with Anderson. An upgrade at DT is needed. Rankins and Collins are solid. But if you want a dominant defense you need an elite DT. I want to make a run at Chris Jones. If that doesn’t work then re-sign Rankins and hope you strike gold in the draft somewhere.

All good RBs. That’s the beauty of adding one. You get an upgrade over what this team had for a fraction of the cost of a difference maker at another position.

And for this offense in particular, i’d say it’s necessary.

If I saw a prospect worth a 1st this year i’d say draft one in the 1st.

As a Texans fan we’ve seen bad TE play. I don’t want to let a quality TE leave this team once they get here. If you get rid of Schultz, you pay as much or more to hope you can replace him. Just keep him and let him give you that 50-60 catch 600 yard production he’s become pretty reliable at getting.

I don’t see an elite TE available and if you can’t find that then keep the solid one you have at the “solid” cost level. Schultz wont get paid enough to be trying to play money ball with the position.

Agreed, but the biggest issue with the team is scoring only 3 points on offense in a playoff game. They do need a S and I'm hoping that they can add Cole Bishop in the 4th to help with this and add another in FA. I would spend my wad of cash to bring in a difference maker like Chris Jones. Add this to the defense and they will be much improved.

Spend the draft picks adding to the offense.

Agreed. I’m not saying don’t spend on defense. Just don’t spend at LB. I advocated upgrades along DL and secondary.

True Kinchens is too high a bar (probably need 23 to grab him) given possibility of adding a highly rated player at another position at that slot and given team’s needs offensively.

But if that’s the case i’m making a run at Chris Jones for DT and Antoine Winfield for safety. Imagine adding those two to this defense…

Really just one of them allows the defense to take the next step.

Cade Stover is not elite, but could/should be an upgrade over any TE on this roster not named Schultz.
Stover is big, fast and a noted blocker and catcher - the bonus with him is he will be reunited with Stroud so there will be no issues with instant familiarity.
I think he could be very good in our O.

So you’re getting rid of a sure thing for someone who could/should not be an upgrade over said sure thing? No thanks.
