2023 Free Agency

I really wanted the team to address LB and center in FA. My initial targets have been snapped up. Maybe the team feels really good about certain prospects in the draft?

I am happy about adding Shaq Mason. Did not think Cann would be released but Mason is an upgrade at the position. The problem is that Cann was a solid player, center is the one that needs upgrading now!

Happy about adding Ward to the secondary. A dependable veteran is just what this secondary needs to take the next step.

I think the team was priced out of edge rushers in FA and unlike center and LB i’m ok with that because there are plenty of candidates in the draft to fill that role.

Noah Brown is another interesting addition to the WR room. Could be competition for Nico Collins at X and the team adds another WR that can block well.

Mike Boone is actually on my “preseason hall of fame”. I remember when he was in his first few years with Minnesota and thinking, “Man if he just got out behind Dalvin Cook he’d be a good RB somewhere! He needs the ball more!” He is a very athletic player for the position and has low tread on his tires. Has excelled on ST as well. Should be an upgrade over Ogunbowale as the change of pace/mainly ST back.

Ridgeway and Winovich are lottery tickets imo. If Ridgeway can stay healthy he can be an upgrade at NT. Winovich is kind of like Derek Rivers in that he’s a talented player with injury issues. I’m actually more excited about Rivers re-signing due to the edge rushing potential he flashed last preseason.

Happy to get Keenum back in Houston. As far as backup QBs go he is top tier and the team added him for a reasonable price.

There are still signings to make in FA. Hopefully the team can make a move for a starting center/mike LB prior to draft.

Top disappointments for me:

Not signing one of my top centers (Pocic, Bradbury, Brendel)

Not signing a Mike (Edmunds went for silly money, Pratt and Vander Esch would have been reasonable money).

Top moves that made me happy:

Jimmie Ward
Robert Woods
Trading for Shaq Mason
Case Keenum

I forgot to mention Andrew Beck signing. He is being paid more than Case Keenum to be here so I expect him to make the team. FB/move TE /special teams? His TE coach is now in Houston.

Will Hairston still make the team? Competition to watch. This team WILL have a lead FB. I suspect if Hairston wins the FB job then Beck will take one of the TE roster spots.

Allow me to add gas prices rent food nursing and assisted living housing etc Veteran benefits for Texas veterans etc
vets born in ANY state that are 100% disabled pay ZERO property taxes in Texas. And believe me that 100% disability is easier to get than you think. My neighbor from Maryland moved down here when she retired with a 100% disability caused by a knee injury playing base softball. Doesn’t stop her from running with her dogs, however.

Aw man you mean all these Texans quarterbacks not the team and organization 2002-2022 all sucked too.
After all in the end still no Super Bowl ring.
David Carr
Tony Banks
Dave Ragone
Matt Schaub
Matt Leinart
Sage Rosenfels
Ryan Fitzpatrick
Ryan Mallet
Brian Hoyer
Tj Yates
Brandon Weeden
Brock Osweller
Tom Savage
Deshaun Watson
AJ McCarron
Tyrod Taylor
Kyle Allen
Jeff Driskel
and Blake Bortles has had more success in the NFL than any of those on this list.

By what measurable? He sucked as good as any of the Texans listed. If a QB sucks….suck bad enough to gain great draft position…..don’t suck just bad enough to leave the team in no man’s land in the draft.

The Jags made to a conference final

so the Bears and Falcons are now good attractive teams but the Texans arent? This is the kind of mind numbing propaganda we are being fed and you are falling for it. Could it be that this team is run by a dysfunctional GM and hired by adysfunctional owner?

:foottap:

We are being spoon fed the same propaganda (aka bull chip) on this very site, by some of our own members.

Some here are falling for it. I prefer the koolaid over the bs myself. Much more palatable. :D

Bingo and was 1 quarter away from going to the Super Bowl before succumbing to Tom Brady in the 4th quarter.

A single measure that knew, but I don't think it makes him a better or more successful QB, but I lack the energy for the debate today.

Our QB situation is so bad that we’re back to arguing Keenum vs Shillelagh?

lol

Neither

I’d still take Mayfield for a placeholder over Keenum any day.

They are searching for MIKE… i’d imagine Kirksey will be cut if Perryman signs. Perryman has dealt with injuries throughout his career but is talented when healthy. Has missed games every year of his career, but the only time he managed to make it to 15 games, he was a pro bowler in 2021.

He is one of the best MLBs in the league against the run… but below average against the pass. Would be an upgrade over Kirksey I suspect, but would like him to come off the field on passing downs.

Free Agency is pretty much over for the Texans until Caserio can restructure some contracts vs cutting some mediocre players and contracts. The Kool-Aid Brigade has been full of giddiness for the last six months with an available salary cap they haven't seen in years. The $41MM (which could've been twice that if not for the poorly managed Cooks and Tunsil contracts), that was the available beginning of this new year is down to $18MM and the Texans will need $19MM to sign their new draft class.

Yep understandable how some disabled veteran service connected benefits are questionable in certain circumstances. Speaking for myself and our marine son who recently upgraded 80 -100% disability rating. Iraq War Ramadi door to door infantry. It took about over 10 years after discharge to get that increase rating. For me USAF viet era vet no disability. But Texas benefits that are available and some I have used are the Hazelwood Act paid my college tuition, Texas has 9 veteran homes locations, TExas veteran home and improvement and land loans, Texas has the senior exemption property taxes, Legacy Act give Hazelwood to qualified child, Texas Veterans Employment Program 5 or 10 pt preference (got my 30 yr DOD retired thru this after discharge and school) worked side by side many veterans including disabledand retired at several bases. Veteran Entrepreneur Program, Texas Parks benefits, Texas has 4 veteran cementaries.
Anyway you know the gist of it but of course applied here to NFL players not so much. Most NFL players idnk how many are not veterans or served in the military therefore not apply. Most went thru college after high school.

Anyone know how much cap space we have left now for additional signings?
According to Spotrac, this morning, with everything accounted for including the draft pool cap and the dead cap, Texans have about $8.4M.

BUT, only the top 51 salaries are counted against the cap, so this number is $18.3 M.

I could be wrong, but the way I understand it, we have $18M left for signing new players.

I like the Mason trade even though I'm not a fan of 30 yr Olds on rebuild. He's consistent and more of a run blocker vs pass blocker. Releasing Cann doesn't make sense especially with Greens struggles from last year. I guess if needed, they can bring him back if needed.

While thst is a key metric its not the only one. Fair to middling QB’s have been on teams thst won SB’s. There are 10 other guys on offense, 11 on D, St’s play s role and coaching is huge to get the most out of a guy.

its fair to include it, one reason he is 3rd in my hypothesis, but lets be clear. Blake never lived up to his draft position. The fact that he is 3rd on my list is an indictment of the Texans more than Blake.

You had me at "has dealt with injuries throughout his career"

I know there's still the rest of free agency and the draft, but based on what I'm seeing so far, I'm guessing this is maybe going to be a 5-win team. That will probably have them drafting somewhere between picks 3 and 9 (based off of draft positions for 5-win teams over the last five years).
