WK1: Colts at Texan Gameday & Discussion

Yup, Lovie is off to an inauspicious start. We’ve never had a HC with even a hint of a nutsack but that one takes the cake. With decisions like that, I give him 2 years until he is back in the unemployment line. Is it any wonder that not a single team interviewed the guy over multiple seasons, and he was an afterthought here? The only reason he is HC is because the Texans through sheer incompetence became desperate and he was the guy…the guy even the team he is working for didn’t want.

Now I understand why nobody wanted him. He has no stones, and he will never win diddly squat in the modern NFL. He is a relic. It’s like giving Ben Franklin an iPad and expecting him to understand and use it.

Nice guy, very very likable, but he’s living in 1986. The Lovie is fired countdown has officially begun.

Nice guy, very very likable, but he’s living in 1986. The Lovie is fired countdown has officially begun.

But he's great for a rebuilding team. He knows talent, particularly on the defensive side of the ball. When the rebuild is done Lovie's going to have the table set for the next HC. He's going to be a very underrated, yet important part of Texans history.

BTW, Lovie's team did what nobody predicted they could do, tie the Colts.

Here’s that crucial third and one play. Dude split both Britt and McCray.

DE got around Tunsil easily....taking away the bounce outside option and the LB shot the gap between Tunsil and Guard....taking away the original call. Too late to try and change direction to the right side of the OL.

At what point did the OL think they were in pass protection? Tunsil danced left and right while the rest of the OL got zero push forward. Pretty much the only reason a yard couldn't be gained.

I hope Lovie took this as an educating moment to his team. I'd tell them....yes, I lost confidence when we lost 2 yards on a 3rd and 1. Now, I'm stepping in as a protective HC and saving you from yourselves by punting the ball away. We avoided the loss, got the tie, and move on to next week......the week you get to show me that you can execute crucial plays.

And they did it by playing hard, if not smart. But does the result tell us more about the Texans or the Colts?

I agree. Colts’ outlook relies heavily on Ryan being a massive upgrade while no other area of the team takes a step backward. But against Texans he looked the same but maybe a marginal upgrade at best over Wentz.

And if the Colts don’t get the All Pro version of Leonard back soon they will take a step back. Also, they can’t feed Taylor 30+ carries too many games in a row before he breaks down.

He still doesn't talk about the play call on 3rd & 1. Pep hasn't given an interview and explanation? Some reporter needs to step up and ask the question of why Pierce, Green and Hairston as well as Howard were on the bench in that situation. They pretty much telegraphed what they were going to do with that personnel grouping

Meet the new boss. Same as the old boss.

I was disappointed with Pep. I do like the schematics better, and there was some hints of actual real creativity….until they got to 20 points. From that moment on, Lovie and Pep went into the fetal position and did everything they could to not lose the game, while not doing an actual damn thing to try to win it.

both of these guys have been around the block so no excuses. They knew exactly what they were doing. But the capper was third and one with the Colts stuffing the box, and you hand it off to Rex -2 yards and a cloud of dust Burkhead off tackle?

thats your best play and personnel at a very key moment in the game? What in the world are these guys thinking? That play call was a joke. At the least, Mills has to check out of that to a pass play. This is already shaping up to be a continuation of the same old clown show - just that the new clowns are nice clowns instead of asshole clowns.

Either lack of belief in the offense, too much trust in the defense or both.

Even with all the talk about the end of overtime & Mills' ups & downs what really disappointed me was our running game. We rushed 28 times for 77 yards. That's 2.8 yards per attempt. As Jed Clampett would say, "Pitiful... Just Pitiful".

With all noise they made about 4.5 yards per carry this offseason I really expected more. If we don't get something going on the rushing front sharp like this will be the season from hell.

Not that Pierce was running wild with his carries, but for the life of me...how does a JAG like Rex get a 70-30 split share with Pierce. That's more than 2-1 snap count in favor of Rex. In any event, job #1, #2, and #3 for Casserio this offseason was to fix the running game. He nibbled on the RB position in the 4th round, got rid of the only FA acquisition that had even a slight chance of being a decent RB, and has Rex Freaking Burkhead at the head of the RB room.

The inherent problem is the McNair family is not known as risk-takers, so they will always gravitate toward head coaches that reflect their risk adverse nature.

Just look at the list: Capers, Kubiak, O'Brien, Culley, Smith. Not a single one of them known for being bold and willing to take chances with innovation and new concepts.

Next head coach will most likely be just as milquetoast as the McNair family. *Paging Jeff Fisher*

100% spot on. But hey the tailgating and burgers are great, and don’t forget the new food items in the concourse!

I’d argue no belief in the defense either, otherwise he’d go for it or attempt a long field goal. But he didn’t want the Colts anywhere near midfield

Yeah I was referring to the play calling once they were up big.

That end of overtime situation is kind of tricky though. Even if you think your d is really good, kind of a tough spot to put them in and expect them to hold it down.

But I maintain I’d have liked to see them go for it anyways.

Bob McNair was an entrepreneur who started a business. People who start and operate their own business are risk takers.

In terms of hiring coaches:
Capers was the smart decision for a new franchise.

Kubiak was an assistant with no HC experience. Risk.

OB. Another assistant. Top prospect for the coaching candidates. No NFL HC experience. He was supposed to bring in game adjustments.

Culley - DOA for a troubled franchise

Lovie - the legal answer

C'mon ya'll, we got 3 or 4 Debbie Downers, Brown Clouds, negative, pessimistic or whatever you want to call them people on here that never have a good thing to say about this team, I think we all know who they are.
Give Mills a few years to learn and grow. You think Jax is ready to cut bait with Lawrence? What did Josh Allen look like after his 1st year? I guess Zack Wilson is a flop after onae year, probably ought to cut him. Warren Moon went
12-33 during his 1st 3 years, never had a winning record till his 6th year. Probably should have dumped him to after 2 years. Wait he's in the HOF.
Theres a whole list of QBs that had a slow or uninspiring start that turned out pretty good. What's the point of consolidating all our picks next year to move way up, draft a hot QB prospect then jettison him outta here if he doesn't have a probowl rookie season? Or sophmore season?
Hell, most people here said we'd win 3-5 games this year....So is it a surprise we lost to Indy? All you that said we'd win 3-5 games certainly didn't expect us to beat Indy. No wait, we TIED them!
So don't act so surprised and disapointed that we came out of the Indy game with a tie. Ya'll ought to be tickled! We only have to win a few more out of the 16 games we have left to meet your expectations!
We can do this!
If we had of gone for it and failed, Lovie would be going thru day 4 of his crucifixion today for not punting the ball away and taking the tie. What did you possibly see from the 4th quarter thru O/T that led you to believe we could make positive yards against Indy on that last play?!? Screw that, take the tie and regroup for Denver. Hey, we're in 1st place in the division! Ya'll Brown Clouds missed that didn't you? Lol!

IIRC, only Porky has ruled out Mills for our QB and even he should realize we cannot get a replacement this season. Most of us including myself realize that we should be rooting for meals to have a great season whether he is the future or not. A person given their honest opinion should not be considered a Debbie Downer. It just differs from yours and even Ruby rainbows could be correct.

As I’ve said throughout this thread, you don’t leave opportunities to win on the table. You’ve just got to make 3 yards. They made plenty of 3 yard plays in that game. If they don’t make it, you’ve just got to defend a pass, make a stop, all things they’ve done throughout the game. Hell, the Colts could have had another bad center exchange. Blankenship wasn’t having a good day. He ends up getting cut. A lot of things that could have happened where they don’t lose while still trying to win, and Lovie punted any chance for a win away and simply assumed they’d lose.

Doesn’t seem like a good message to my team to me.

Except you know in the 4th when the Colts just hung 17 points on them and the defense was even more gassed. You are so worried about the message to the team a tie does but what kind of message does it send when they were up 3 quarters only to lose in the last 10 minutes. You are so worried about what the tie does to moral you forget what a loss does. How much better were we after the Chiefs came out of no where and beat us? Or did you miss all the “we were just joking the first half” memes?

That guy with no stones took the Rams from 31 in defense to 3 in one season. He also took the Bears to the super bowl. Yes that was all in the past but pretty much every coach a team can hire has their achievements in the past because coaches with current achievements don’t get fired. And yes next you are going to talk about Daboll and his decision to go for it while failing to recognize or at least mention that Daboll had Barkley that he could the ball to. We have a newly drafted rookie and Burkhead, slight difference in talent there.

OK, fine. Here's an opportunity to go win a ******* football game, guys. Let's take the tie instead so we don't lose. Yeaaaaaa!!!!! Can we have pizza too? please please please

Lose, loss and beat us. Those are the words you just used in your post. Not once was the word WIN mentioned. As I've said previously, a lot of focus what if we lose, not much on what if we win.

True. You don't announce 4.5 YPC as a goal then strap all your hopes to the legs of Burkhead. Even worse was standing back afterwards wondering why 4.5 YPC wasn't achieved.

You are starting to sound like a bad motivational speaker "Believe and you can do anything." well to quote a John Wayne movie "Faith can move mountains, but it can't beat a faster draw." There was absolutely zero evidence that the offense would get those last few yards and zero evidence that the defense could hold the Colts those last few yards. The focus is on what if we lose because that was the far more likely scenario based off the last 18 minutes or so of football we had just seen. In fact I haven't heard you say anything to justify your position other than you don't like a tie. Well nobody does but in this case at this time it seems liked the best we could hope for.

Tell me what makes you so sure that we would be able to win?

What is the difference between him perhaps rehashing all the points vs all the regular posters rehashing ad nauseum every post on every thread all day everyday? how many thousands of DW lawsuit posts were there? They were all new and different of course, lol. Anyway if he stands accused of rehashing isn’t he in a fine line of company? are you maybe attacking a thoughtful poster?

Right, plus that attitude keeps posters who don't post here very often post even less.

Good to hear your thoughts Wildroot

I think risk taker is the wrong description. I do think the McNairs hire personalities that closely align with their own. Very passive and conservative. They think, how do I avoid losing instead of thinking, how do we dominate? That sometimes means playing "risky" or aggressive, something the McNairs don't do.

Never said anywhere that they’d win. My point is they passed on the chance to win. This isn’t that hard, guys, really. But hey, if you’re good with not even trying, more power to you.

Yup. I paid close attention to Lovie's words. Not one single time did he use the word win that I recall. We thought it would be better to take the tie then a loss were his words and his reasoning (paraphrasing). Not one single time did he say it was possible to win or he thought he should go for it to instill some juice into this team.

What the hell kind of message is that to your team? You all suck and I have zero confidence in any of you on either side of the ball?

Seems to me that with a young team with no expectations, that's the time to take some reasonable chances. If you punt there, you're chances of winning are reduced to a one-off very very very longshot that it accidently touches a Colt and you recover. That's one in a million. Basically if you punt, it's like little league where one team is losing badly and the coach throws in the towel and forfeits.

That's really the mindset you want this team and org to have? Those white rally towels Pittsburgh gives to their fans need to be shipped here. We can use them as surrender towels. Lovie can have one on the sideline. If it looks like he can't tie, we waves it and says he gives up. Let's just take our ball and go home kids. Ice cream and pizza party and a participation trophy for all of you at my house later. It's a good thing Lovie wasn't a commander during WW II. We'd all be speaking German right now. The guy has zero stones until proven otherwise.

I don't know.

Just find it odd that he finally decided to post & when he did, it was to say exactly what's been said as if we weren't saying it.

I find it odd that the threads you're talking about played out the way they did as well.

That's not the mindset anyone wants them to have. It is what it is. They featured Burkhead in the run game. It took them 7 games & three failed attempt at finding a feature back to make that decision in 2021 & they did it this year in the first 15 minutes.
Ice cream and pizza party and a participation trophy for all of you at my house later.
I'm pretty sure no one got ice cream & pizza. That's not the message Lovie was spitting.

They passed on the chance to win when they got 17 points hung on them not on the last play, but sure Custer you charge into the Little Big Horn.

I disagree with your thought about his having said exactly what’s been said as if he weren’t saying it…whatever that means. He brought up some interesting and forgotten stats on Moon for instance. And he made other interesting points that, god forbid, came from a fan perspective. Let me ask you, will these CONSTANT attackers, you know who they are, be allowed to continue to beat the crap out of the same old complaints at your will? Aren’t they saying the same things over and over and over as if they weren’t saying it? Steel is right. Who wants to post here anymore. I know I’m dropping out More and more. Im getting tired of the MB’s version of the DoJ and FBI.
