Is It time to fire David Culley after 1 year?

Interesting.

What did you think of Bill O'Brien?
First, I boycotted the NFL in 2020 and didn't watch a game.

In 2019, Texans won AFC South with a 10-6 record.

In 2018, 11-5 and first in AFC South.

In 2016, 9-7, but managed to win AFC South.

2017 was a bad year, 4-12.

3 time winner of AFC South in 4 years. So I felt O'Brian was not doing a bad job. Looked forward to each draft to see what pieces would be added and anticipated every traing camp. We were just short of taking the next step. From reading the Chronicle I was aware of his firing and it surprised me.

Alot of the true fans of Houston sports like myself don’t like to hear that, but this is the truth…especially as it pertains to Houston pro football b/c between 2 franchises it’s the 1 sport that hasn’t won anything. people are still holding onto the Gamblers and the Luv ya Blue Oilers for Christs sake.

& without even 1 AFCCG appearance, fans will continue to crap on the Texans…b/c that just how fans are here…not many diehards like myself.

I’ve said it before and it makes people mad but I’ll say it again most Texan fans couldn’t cut it as a fan of another team. You look at fan bases for teams like Detroit, Raiders, Dolphins, Browns and dear God the Cowboys who's team hasn’t been relevant for longer than the Texans have been around and they still show up every Sunday.

Meanwhile we are less than twenty years old and are complaining that we have only won division championships. Has the Texans ownership pulled some bone headed moves, absolutely they have but almost all owners have. Anyone that thinks the McNairs are the worst owners in the league really need to take a look at some of the other owners.

Cal or Bob neither might be Kraft but neither were/are they Mike Brown either.

I remember when I first started watching the Rockets back in the HSE, Buck Johnson years…I always used to wonder why fans weren’t more rawkus & into it given the team’s recent history just 3-4 years before…..plus they were making the playoffs it seemed like every year at least. I came to understand why after the Oilers’ subsequent playoff collapses in the coming years…as I started hearing grumblings from fans…

Yep, the Texans are currently trying to rebuild like the Stros did. Lets hope Caserio (I cant understand why some fans aren't even willing to give the man a chance.) is the new Luhnow.

I get what you're saying, but I dont think anything good should be said about the McNairs as owners. They're strict profiteers and are closer to Mike Brown as owners than Kraft.

Fans don’t understand that it’s seemingly insignificant wins like this that help to build momentum towards turning things around. Dungy, Lynch, Sapp and Brooks all speak to this during their 96' season at about the 19 min mark in the video below after a comeback win against of all teams.........The Chargers.

Are you saying that if someone said to Kraft “You can win the Super Bowl this year but you won’t make much money or you can have a record breaking year but end up last in the league.” He wouldn’t take the money?

A couple of weeks ago. I tried to make the point that even if we expected a losing season or a terrible team, there is still value (e.g., player evaluations, Mills development, OJT for Culley) in being competitive.

It's the same thing with these "insignificant" wins. Regardless of the opponent. We want to see if they will "turtle" with a lead. We want to see Mills move the ball past midfield. We can still evaluate clock management. We want to see how Culley manages and motivates his team when teams in a similar situation start their countdown to the offseason. Will this insignificant win build momentum? There is value to insignificant wins and value in how competitive they play during "expected losses".

I think you misunderstood what some have been saying. Winning with young players that could have a future here has meaning. Playing a bunch of JAGs that won’t be here next year is meaningless. That’s what has been so frustrating about this season. They were going to lose most of the games, anyway. Why not do that with younger players, sooner?

One only has to look at the Jags to see a franchise in worse shape than ours.
Just because other teams have problems doesn’t mean fans should turn a blind eye to their own team’s issues. Not a big proponent of the “misery loves company “ logic.

So why didn't Casserio pursue and sign more undrafted free agent rookies instead of signing so many relatively untalented league vets ? OK so that makes sense to me, certainly a fair question.

because that’s a loser’s mentality & that’s the very thing you’re trying to break the franchise away from that’s why…”Vegas and everyone else says we’re gonna be terrible….so let’s go right ahead and do everything we can to prove them right!”

True Winners don’t concede anything until you either have to or until the skins are OFFICIALLY on the wall.

Furthermore, you stand to potentially lose more than you gain when you send a kid out there who doesn’t know what he’s doing. Wade Smith spoke to this Sunday after the game when they discussed the contributions of this rookie class. When you send these young guys out there before they’re ready, you have the potential to wreck their confidence…..get them or others hurt & those are things that have the potential to have long term consequences.

Brevin Jordan looks like the best of the lot when it comes to this rookie class. It took him a while to get to the field, but when he got there he was an immediate contributor. He was 1 of the last guys from the class to be made active & get some PT. Nico in contrast has been getting run from day 1, he contributed, but he just had his best game to date last week. 2 different routes to the field yet same results at the same time. The cookie cutter approach of just throwing them all in the deep end and seeing which floats isn’t always the best strategy….even if it’s perceived to be.

When rhe Oilers stopped winning, fans stopped going to the games... I could walk up ro the ticket window 30 min before kickoff and get my choice of seats
How many are alot? 1 or 2?
Houston fans are bandwagon, front-runners who will support a winner and barely pet up with a loser... baseball being the possible exception
Nah, when Bud was moving, they stop coming. Even the sorry years after luv ya blue the dome was pretty jacked.

I have my theories. Mainly, trying to make a certain guy believe the team was trying to compete. It’s been a disappointment to me and the biggest reason I haven’t gotten completely behind the Caserio Way. I’m softening my stance, because I feel things are now going the best they can be.

Clarify, what younger players are you referring to? UFA's? Are you going to raid other teams' practice squads? Other teams' rejects?

Will these younger players be here longer than a year or two?

I'm a strong believer in "win the games you should win"

If you can't do that then prepare for perennial losing. Like the Jags, Jets, Lions, the old Browns.

Doesn't matter if you get the 1st overall pick, or the 32nd. Losers lose.

The best teams in the league (& I want this team to be among them) regularly pick closer to 32.

No such thing as a meaningless win. Not when you are in the business of winning.

To a certain extent you’re probably right, but this is professional football and these guys are out there trying to make a living. We’ve had the tank debate all year long and some can’t grasp the concept that it’s not the players out there “trying” to lose. The players are trying to make a living. They’re going to play hard if for nothing else to try and get a contract with someone next year.

Now seeing what a guy like Mills has is one thing, but seeing what all these JAG 1 year players have, who a majority won’t be here next year, is another. Sure, maybe you find a couple of guys who played well and you want to try and re-sign, but the turnover on this roster is going to be huge again next year. Camp Caserio totally threw this season away not bringing in younger who would have a much better chance of being here in 3 years. 90% of today’s roster will be gone in that time, if not more.

Most of the 1 year JAGs they signed this year won’t be, so what difference does it make?

Actually the difference is, younger guys would probably stand a better chance of being here in 2-3 years than all the older 1 year contract guys they signed will.

I really liked what Caserio did. He signed a bunch of guys 6-8 years experience to one year deals. I would think the ones that can play will be extended, those who can't, won't.

We're not ever going to field 22 All-Pro players. The bulk of your team is going to be journey men type.

I understand wanting that bulk of journeymen to have been drafted & homegrown. But it's not the only way to do it.

Man what do you know about the Blade.

Houston fans are very fickle. By far the worst fan base in sports history.

Nah, when Bud was moving, they stop coming. Even the sorry years after luv ya blue the dome was pretty jacked.

You must be too young to remember, but for years Channel 13 had to buy the tickets to prevent a black-out. Later it was other corporate sponsers... It was only the Luv Ya Blue era that really got the attendance jacked

Things right now are going to be the best they can be?

Caserio added 4-5 guys that are solid players in the draft and FA. They will have probably a top 5 pick in next yrs draft and 4 top 100 picks. I'm hoping that he can find 2 star leel players and 2 really good player with those picks. Also if he can add in FA what he did this yr with Thomas/KGH/Kirksey and Collins the team should be much improved.

Most of all Caserio found a QB that has shown as much promise as any starting QB in this draft and he did it in the 3rd rd instead of having to use a top 10 pick like most teams do. Downside to that is Caserio doesn't get the 5th yr option on Mills.

I would also add the coaching was there to help Mills.

If this does happen, the only way I would not laugh at this organization is if David Culley resigns or there is a clause in his contract that gives the Texans an out (which would be unheard of). If McDaniels does come this way, I'm betting his contract will be more than whatever Culley is receiving.

I disagree.

The Texans were paying three GMs at one time. It is possible for the org to throw money at the wall to see if it sticks.

This is the type of move I would want the org to make.

To go after a high profile coordinator and not worry about paying the guy you are firing.

It would have been overwhelmingly approved on this board to fire OB and go after Kyle Shannahan when he was available.

Or even when Andy Reid was fired from the Eagles.

If they are going for the Patriots South theme - go all in and get McDaniels if he is available or wait until he is.

I am not saying I approve of the Patriots coaches or want that. I wanted the opposite.

I am just saying don’t half ass it if that is what you are doing.

I wanted soooooooo badly for them to fire O'Brien & take a shot at Arians

Exactly.

By the third year most football intelligent people (I am not included in that statement) knew OB was not the guy. We were hunting for the right QB to run the complicated offense.

There have been a few coaches that have come available that would be worth putting a feeler out about coming to the Texans. Arians, Reed, Shannahan. Probably a couple others.

I know Cowher wouldn’t talk to a team unless there was already an opening. He said so during the Kubiak years.

I sure a guy like McDaniels doesn’t have a morality problem.

A guy like McDaniels is a high ceiling, low floor gamble. His tenure in Denver was absolutely disastrous. But we know his name for a reason- he has some good traits. If he were coupled with the right gm to "direct" him and had another former hc or 2 on the staff, it might be worth trying.

I'd prefer to look elsewhere ,but jm is not worse case scenario.

Culley is/was never more then a bridge hc imo.

If you dissect the information said here the guy is saying he is calling people and these people are saying “there is a chance.” We could say the same thing and already know there’s a “chance.”

This is what bugs me about news in general.

They say things just to say things for clicks that doesn’t say anything at all. It’s all vague and a rush to be first.

Coaches often learn from being fired. It reminds me of how the most successful business owners all had to experience failure before they got it right (excluding the tech sector where nothing is real).

McDaniels was young when he was fired, so he's had a lot of room to grow. The only unknown for me is his personality. Success as an NFL coach is so dependent on personality.

Also, there is no punishment when these reporters get things wrong. How many of them were pumping out stories about Watson trade being a lock and gonna happen “very soon” right up until it didn’t? Nobody remembers who got a story wrong but everybody remembers who was first to report the right news. So might as well throw a bunch of 💩 out there and see what sticks!

Culley handled this mulligan season as good as could be expected b/c nothing worked as planned. I believe the same could be said about Kelly as well.

I’ve had a little time on my hand waiting to get back on the board so I checked out a little bit of everything.

First, Caserio was the QB at John Carroll University where he set the career passing yards record. It may be one reason he likes being on the headset with sideline. It doesn’t make it right and it doesn’t make it wrong….just different. It’s not like a book nerd who’s become a GM wanting in on the action.

Second, Josh McDaniels was Caserio’s receiver (recruited as QB) and roommate at JC University. Their friendship goes back to roughly 1995.

**Worth noting…..John Carroll University has been one hellava pipeline in regards to FO personnel and coaches to the Patriots. Their legacy sort of starts with Don Shula.**

Anyhow, Caserio and McDaniels have a history that goes back before their days in New England. I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised to see Caserio make his call for McDaniels beginning next season when the real rebuild begins.

Food for thought….Josh’s brother Ben McDaniels is the Texans Offensive Assistant and Assistant WR Coach (QB Coach at Michigan in 2019) since this season. Just saying….what if Ben McDaniels was put in place this season by Caserio to be the eyes and ears for Josh to help with the player evaluation?

I guess what I might be alluding to…..I wouldn’t be too surprised if Josh is named the next HC and that he doesn’t name his brother Ben his OC who I would bet is very familiar with the offenses ran by the Patriots, Michigan, and now the Texans.
