Texans’takeaways from Monday, one day after their 25-22 loss to New England:
Some Pep in Mills' game
Offensive coordinator Tim Kelly had a creative game plan for a New England defense that was fifth in the league, including fourth against the pass. Davis Mills completed 21 of 29 (72.4 percent) for 312 yards and three touchdowns. In the three-point loss, he didn’t have an interception, averaged 10.7 yards per attempt and fashioned a 141.7 rating. He was sacked three times.
A lot of credit for Mills’ performance should go to Pep Hamilton, the passing game coordinator/quarterback coach. As Mills’ position coach, Hamilton spends a lot of time with the quarterback during the week and on game day when the offense is on the sideline.
Hamilton played a vital role in helping Mills forget about his dismal performance at Buffalo, where he threw four interceptions and posted a 23.4 rating, and focus on the Patriots.
Fans shouldn’t be surprised at Hamilton’s impact on Mills. During his career as a quarterback coach, Hamilton has played a key role on the development of Alex Smith (49ers), Jay Cutler (Bears), Andrew Luck (Colts) and Justin Herbert (Chargers).
“Pep had a rookie (Herbert) with the Chargers (2in 020), and he did a nice job with him knowing how to deal with a rookie quarterback,” coach David Culley said. “Having that experience with a guy like that has been very good (for) Davis. As long as we keep playing well, I think Davis will keep getting better and better.”
