[Pick 67] Davis Mills QB Stanford

I would rather Taylor finished the season. Mills is learning and important is very clear. However, if he can sit back and watch for the rest of the year, he will start seeing how/when/where he made mistakes. Better than that, he can learn how to avoid them. So, come next year he can straight ball out.
The reason Tryod was available. Because he has no future for a franchise

Great game by him…if he starts to string a few of them together, then I’ll believe we have a little something.

He's gotta play to see this.

I think while he still has rookie moments, today was his 1st start at home that wasn't a short week. I said from the beginning I wanted to see what Mills could do in week 3 against a Belichick defense. He passed with flying colors. IMHO

I know that he's making progress reading defenses and getting his timing down with his receivers. I'm keeping Moore on the active roster. Mills/Moore seem to have great chemistry.

Winning is a habit.
OK, but this team is losing. So, let's play the younger players that may have a future with this team. That means guys like Brevan Jordan, Scottie Phillips, Wallow, Heck, Greenard, Blacklock, as well as Mills. And if they're not ready? Then the coaching staff needs to give them the reps at practice to get them ready.

What are the Texans trying to do this season? Win? Well, they are failing. If it's trying to rebuild and get better, then this season can still be a success. It's time to change to that course.

They never more on D. A good edge rusher, a solid NT/DT to push the OL or require 2 blockers and any DB that can all but shut down 1 side of the field would be the main areas. Get that and a few more toys on O and have Mills keep playing like Sunday and we will win games

After the Bills game, he looked like the worst. No way can anyone make a judgement this early. They all need time and snaps. I hope they all get that.

Nope, I expected the Bills game. In Buffalo, in the rain, playing against a rookie QB making his 1st start on the road.

Mills getting a full week of practice and playing at home, lighting up a Belichick defense, a defense that made Wilson look like dog crap, yep the future is bright. Will there be bumps in the road? Sure there will be, but the talent is there.

32 out of 32 teams would still take the guys taken in the 1st round over Mills. That's not a knock on Mills or praise for the others. Just the facts as they are at the moment.

I dont really care what other teams do.

I'm just going to enjoy the ride as Mills improves.

I cant wait until Mills gets Collins/Amendola back. It's looking like Caserio may have found his QB.

I like Mills a lot and have from the beginning. I thought he had really good shot at developing, however I was really hoping he would be able to observe and learn as the back up his first year given his limited experience. I never would have thought he would look as good as he does already, this quickly. That looks very promising. At this point, I say leave him in there the rest of year now since he is progressing nicely.

And it's not as if we'll win that many more games with Taylor anyways.

There is a good possibility we could win 6 of our remaining games: Indi, Mia, Jets, Indi, Jac, and the last game against Ten at home. If we could do this, we would have a respectable 7 wins for the season.

I think my estimate for this year of between 3 to 5 wins still holds. It would be nice though if they did win 7, I'm always up for being wrong when shorting the team.

Eyeballing him as the game progressed, what did you think about him?
He got somebody involved that didn't have Cooks on the back of his jersey, which can only be a good thing because teams are going to game plan to take Cooks out. Gotta have other options to move the ball. Thought he and Moore were in sync, likely due to both of them getting the reps in practice when he was the backup. Of course, Moore only had 22 of his 109 yards in the 2nd half. Nice that Kelly remembered they have TEs and that they're allowed to catch passes.

Thought Mills made some tight window throws and got away with them, which he won't always. I don't remember any throws that were awful like last week. Deep ball is not there, as far as accuracy is concerned. Maybe that comes with more reps.

Would have to watch the 22 to make further analysis, see what he's not seeing, his progressions, what the routes look like, etc.

They actually said "quarterback rating"; which is confusing. QBR is a relatively new ESPN rating system and only goes up to 100. Did they mean passer rating? Or is there a third commonly used rating system? I didn't hear them qualify their comment, which doesn't mean much.

(edit) Had to change QBR to ESPN.

Ok, some posters

Draft- Mills sucks

Preseason- Mills sucks and I hope he never sees the field.

1st game - He looked OK after a shaky 1st couple of series, but he still sucks.

2nd game on a short week- He was held back by Culley/Kelly. Why? Because he sucks

3rd game- See I told you he sucked. Never mind the Bills have one of the best teams in the NFL.

4th game- He got lucky, he still sucks, gotta see more of him playing, oh wait he doesn't need to be playing once TT gets healthy. BTW, I could be wrong but since he was a 3rd rd pick he probably still sucks, even though he put up a 140 QBR against a Belichick defense. Yep, I'm sticking with Mills still sucks.

So, you're saying some posters are being stubborn, unfair, unreasonable and irrational when discussing a Texans QB?

No I'm saying some posters are not going to give this guy a chance.

I gave your sexual Predator 2 yrs before I realized he was a selfish prick. (I even said after his rookie yr that I got my eval wrong) The fact that you couldn't see the Sexual Predator is who he's always been.

Yeah, they intertwine the 2 quite often, but there is a big difference. What they typically call QB rating is actually passer rating, which only takes into account completion percentage, yards, TD and INT. Whatever that formula is, a perfect score is 158.3.

The ESPN thing is actually called True QB Rating. It takes a lot more things into account, kinda like DVOA where, for example, a 12 yard pass completion on 3rd and 10 gets more credence than a 12 yard pass completion on 3rd and 15. That scale goes from 0-100 with 50 being exactly average.

So anytime you hear somebody say someone had a QB rating of 121.4, that's actually passer rating. True QB Rating can't go above 100.

I thought he was drafted because they saw something special in him & were going to groom him to "compete" in 2022. I didn't think he'd ever dress on game day.

In the preseason I didn't see anything special. Thought he was still raw. & he was playing against guys who aren't playing on Sundays.

Thought he was shaky first couple of series against Cleveland, but settled down well.

I was impressed how "settled" he looked against Carolina. Impressed with his poise.

Buffalo, I didn't get too down on him. I still think they pulled back on the "putting more on his plate" coach speak because of the weather & the run game was useless.

After yesterday I have no problem admitting they do believe he is special & believe he's ready to play.

It's so ironic that in the season Watson distributed the ball most evenly, the Texans only won 4 games.

And he wasn't even in the top ten most deep ball thrown category.

You were out on a young QB who in his 2nd year threw 26 TDs, 9 INTs and contributed to his team winning 11 games? That 2nd year performance led you to spending years shouting from every rooftop how much that QB sucked.

Fast forward to this year and you are criticizing some posters for their reservations about a QB who has thrown 5 TDs and 5 INTs. Now you are posting like you are the voice of logic, reason and patience while waiting for a QB to develop? You really crack me up. If Yoda was a Texans fan, besides using the force to help the OL block better, he would say, "lack of self awareness is strong with this one". Funny stuff.

I dunno that's a very broad statement, but you might be right ?

I was out by the middle of yr 3 when that QB was making the same mistakes he was making as a rookie. No need to continue this conversation and screw up another thread.

Agree and by the way, I'm not complaining about this new and positive SteelB. But you have to give me a heads up so I can water proof my keyboard and start an Amazon Subscribe and Save subscription for Biofreeze so I don't ruin my keyboard spitting out adult beverages and treat the whiplash from these 180s you are doing.

Texans takeaways: Pep Hamilton plays key role in Davis Mills' introduction to NFL
John McClain, Staff writer Houston Chronicle
Oct. 11, 2021Updated: Oct. 11, 2021 3:28 p.m.

Texans’takeaways from Monday, one day after their 25-22 loss to New England:

Some Pep in Mills' game

Offensive coordinator Tim Kelly had a creative game plan for a New England defense that was fifth in the league, including fourth against the pass. Davis Mills completed 21 of 29 (72.4 percent) for 312 yards and three touchdowns. In the three-point loss, he didn’t have an interception, averaged 10.7 yards per attempt and fashioned a 141.7 rating. He was sacked three times.

A lot of credit for Mills’ performance should go to Pep Hamilton, the passing game coordinator/quarterback coach. As Mills’ position coach, Hamilton spends a lot of time with the quarterback during the week and on game day when the offense is on the sideline.

Hamilton played a vital role in helping Mills forget about his dismal performance at Buffalo, where he threw four interceptions and posted a 23.4 rating, and focus on the Patriots.

Fans shouldn’t be surprised at Hamilton’s impact on Mills. During his career as a quarterback coach, Hamilton has played a key role on the development of Alex Smith (49ers), Jay Cutler (Bears), Andrew Luck (Colts) and Justin Herbert (Chargers).

“Pep had a rookie (Herbert) with the Chargers (2in 020), and he did a nice job with him knowing how to deal with a rookie quarterback,” coach David Culley said. “Having that experience with a guy like that has been very good (for) Davis. As long as we keep playing well, I think Davis will keep getting better and better.”
