I had read the articles regarding Bieniemy's past transgressions. Seems light on facts and heavy on incidents that happened 20 years ago. How much of the KC offensive success is due to Reid? Mahomes? Bieniemy? Andy Reid never had a #1 NFL offense until 2018. Since then, he's had two.
Three former Reid OCs have gone on to get NFL HC jobs (Brad Childress, Doug Pederson, Matt Nagy). Moreover, Reid's coaching tree has an exceptional number of HCs. John Harbaugh, Ron Rivera, Sean McDermott. Former NFL HCs Todd Bowles, Pat Shurmer, and Steve Spagnuolo also coached under Reid. An assistant coach is going to learn a lot about what it takes to lead a team from Reid by osmosis.
Questions about Bieniemy's abrasiveness and attitude need to be examined. This organization doesn't need another dictator like O'Brien roaming the sidelines or locker room. But on the surface, where's the evidence of Bieniemy's caustic demeanor? Where are the sideline histrionics? Getting into it with fans? Bieniemy's players love him. I don't see this as a real issue. The issue is, what is Bieniemy's football acumen and his ability to lead players and coaches? And that's the same question for every head coaching candidate.
My issue with this process is, who in the Texans organization is going to vet these would be HCs on their football knowledge? Cal & Jack (LOL!). That's why I've said there needs to be 3 new hires. A HC, a GM, and a head of football operations who knows the game and the business. A football pyramid with a Big Honcho sitting at the top. Someone who knows what it takes to be a NFL HC and GM. Someone that can ask the tough questions and know what the correct answers are. That's what's missing on Kirby.
