TEXANS OTAs

I believe he knows because he has hit both a lot in his rookie year. This past year he was trying to hard to hit the home run. Early on you can tell he was thinking about his leg. So he held onto the ball and ate the sack.

Hopefully the coaches drive home both scenarios and Watson be more acceptable to those type of plays.

Agreed

A slant route to a WRcan also be a hot read.

@phillip_heilman: #Jaguars CB A.J. Bouye says he notices plays in practice that he would have made in previous years that he hasn’t this year because QB Nick Foles puts the ball in the right spot so consistently.

As far as Texans news I don't see any.

And your point of posting this was what?..

What does the "non Bortles" passes not hitting every defender in the hands for pick 6's anymore have to with my question? I mean, couldn't of made plays off Bortles' practice passes too (Lord knows everyone did on his game day passes.)

J/S.. that's not exactly saying much at all. I mean other to say Nick Foles is better than Blake Bortles, what is Phillip Heilman trying to say? EVERYONE KNOWS BLAKE BORTLES IS HORRIBLE. (Steelbtexan liked him though. :) )

Again any new Texans OTA News?

Tweet from @Cody_Stoots: O'Brien said there is a fine line between making sure a player is NFL ready from a basics standpoint and then when you get to install your gameplans and the way your team operates.

Tim Kelly might surprise us, but moving him to the OC spot doesn't have the look and feel of bringing in fresh (for the Texans, anyway) offensive concepts. On the surface, it looks like OB picked an OC who will be a Mini-Me, if you will, to take some of the load.

But maybe, just maybe, Tim Kelly has been studying what's worked so well for teams like Kansas City and a few others. Maybe, just maybe, he'll be a bit of an instrument for some change and new (for the Texans, anyway) offensive concepts. I can squint my eyes and imagine Tim Kelly and Carl Smith having good input into the offensive game plans week to week. The playbook for this year may already be set in stone, but then again, maybe not.

There's obviously a lot of need to modify the Texans' offensive concepts. It's been said that the NFL is a copycat league. Let's hope OB realizes that DWatson is more like Patrick Mahomes than Tom Brady, then adapts his thinking accordingly.

You know I would absolutely LOVE to think that, and for that to be the case, but I just really do not see it. Tim Kelly is in his position likely because he was one of the “first guy in, last guy out” “coaches” (wasn’t exactly a coach, but a grad assistant at Penn State). I mean you look at the guy’s career, he was a grad assistant at a D2 school after playing DL at a D2 college. He went to move on to DC at a D-something definitely wasn’t D1 school, then hopped on with Ball state as a grad assistant and then Penn State as a grad assistant under Bill. All of a sudden Bill moves here and he becomes a quality control (scout team) coach here, and then helps out with the OL (worst position group) then TE’s (equally as bad) and all of a sudden he’s OC.

I’m not knocking the guys work ethic. I’m sure he’s a great guy, hard worker, blah blah blah. But this is simply another yes man to Bill O’Brien. We’re not talking about a guy who was a great college receiver then moved over to the defensive side of the ball and started coaching DB’s on how to defend double moves and keeping their cushion, this is simply a guy who has literally zero business or resume being an offensive coordinator in the NFL and it’s Bill O’Brien slapping management and the fans in the face when they said he needed one. This is him placing a pawn in position to take the fall. Just like he did with Godfrey. I mean I would MAYBE have a slither of confidence if this guy had even the slightest bit of playing experience on the offensive side of the ball, but he doesn’t. He’s simply a guy who has come to know OB’s offense and after Bill’s gone at the end of the year, he will likely be back in the D2 level as a D coordinator or coaching DL at the college level.

Texans OTAs Observations: Jordan Thomas Growing in the Offense
byPatrick D. Starr
5 hrs

Houston Texans OTAs observations, Jordan Thomas, Deshaun Watson, Briean Boddy-Calhoun and more.

The Houston Texans kicked held another set of OTAs at the Methodist Training Center in preparation for the upcoming 2019 season. Here are some observations from the Texans work at the Methodist Training Center.

OTAs Observations
The Texans tight end core is something to behold, especially after it had a remake in just two seasons. The player to watch is Jordan Thomas and how much he played his rookie season and how much expectations have grown for him entering year two. He is becoming a valuable target for Deshaun Watson and their rapport on the field is apparent. Watson is trusting Thomas on the field, and they linked up multiple times on Tuesday with no dropped passes. Thomas remains an issue for a linebacker and safeties trying to cover him in space.

Bill O'Brien has noted the progression in Thomas over the break heading to OTAs.

"I definitely think he's made progression," O'Brien explained of Thomas. "He's worked very hard. Any time you play as a rookie, that can be good and bad. You go through some tough times and it’s a lot different than playing at Mississippi State. He did some good things for us last year, and he's come back here in the offseason program and he's had a decent spring. He's got a long way to go to be where he wants to be and where we need him to be, but he's definitely made a lot of progress."

Head Coach Bill O'Brien has been able to take in more on the field with offensive coordinator Tim Kelly running the offense during practice. O'Brien handles parts of the offense still, but now with Kelly handling portions of the offense, he will be able to handle other duties as needed.

O'Brien discussed the transition with Kelly now as the offensive coordinator.

"There's definitely some things that Tim can do now that takes some things off of my plate, no doubt about it," O'Brien said of Kelly. "I still, relative to last year and the previous year, watch the whole team. I mean, I'm the head coach, I'm responsible for what goes on on the field at every position. So, I still did that. But I definitely think that Tim, with his knowledge and his experience in our offense has definitely helped me to take a little bit of the load off of some of the things I would do normally, offensively over the last two years."

THE REST OF THE STORY

How does vyncint Smith look? Is he bigger and faster and more agile? I heard he's the go to target in practice for Watson today.

patrick

You can tell that he has put work into his game. Much better route runner than he was as a rookie. Don’t read too much into being the "go to" target in practice.

I mean, I'm the head coach, I'm responsible for what goes on on the field at every position.

THE REST OF THE STORY

Even at OL? I thought that was Devlin.

Also, file under our rookie OL need time:

"One thing that always is a jump for rookies is the strength of the game and rookie offensive lineman Max Scharping is finding that out. In a drill, Scharping was matched up with Carlos Watkins working on run technique and Scharping could not move or turn Watkins at all. There was no firing off the line of scrimmage due to no pads, it was more of hands and technique drill, but Scharping could not break Watkins grips at the point of attack. These types of situations will be something to monitor as pads get strapped on when training camp arrives in late July."

Drew Dougherty
TEXANS TV HOST

It’s all about the “c” words for Deshaun Watson this spring: confidence and connection.

The Texans quarterback is getting first team reps for the first time during organized team activities (OTAs). He was limited last year by his recovery from a knee injury, and he was behind Tom Savage and Brandon Weeden as a rookie in OTAs.

Confidence has never been an issue for Watson. He erupted as a rookie in 2017, throwing 19 touchdown passes and running for two more in just seven games. Watson followed his injury-shortened first year with a sterling 2018, completing 68.3 percent of his passes for 4,165 yards, 26 touchdowns and just nine picks. He didn’t throw an interception in nine of the last 10 games in 2018.

Though the confidence hasn’t waned, it’s definitely changed.

“It’s a different level of confidence, so I have a better understanding of what we want to do around here being one of the leaders and also, just take the things that I’ve repped and things that I saw last year and try to improve on it,” Watson said. “I’m encouraged to go out there each and every day and don’t rush anything, let it come to me and just go out there and have fun and play football.”

Jordan Thomas comfortable at TE

Jordan Thomas still remembers the feeling of leaping into the crowd at NRG Stadium after scoring his first two NFL touchdowns in Week 8 against Miami.

That will always be his favorite moment as a rookie.

Now entering his second season as tight end, Thomas looks comfortable in his role, making eye-popping catches and leaping grabs during OTAs.

“It feels great to be in Houston,” Thomas said via Texans Radio. “I didn’t know what I was getting myself into last year so now I’ve got a year under my belt so I’m getting more active so it feels great to be here.”

Thomas switched from wide receiver to tight end last year after being drafted in the sixth round (211th overall) by the Texans. While he played mostly receiver at Mississippi State, he did play tight end during his time at East Central Community College. Thomas, who finished with 20 receptions for 215 yards and four touchdowns, has had a strong offseason so far.

“I definitely think he’s made progression,” head coach Bill O’Brien said. “He’s worked very hard. Anytime you play as a rookie that can be good and bad. I mean, you go through some tough times and it’s a lot different than playing at Mississippi State. He did some good things for us last year and he’s come back here in the offseason program and he’s had a decent spring. There is a spot on the #Texans roster for Cullen Gillaspia if he continues to do what he has shown in practice. The key is to perform during the preseason to show he can make plays. At this rate, good chance he will have a role in the offense in 2019.

BG no doubt sees the value in the Texans having their own Steve Tasker. This is a well rounded thinker we have as GM. Let’s hope Cullen rewards him.

Cullen should been a priority undrafted free agent. Reason Texans drafted him instead because it guaranteed they get him and for lower cost.

Ok fine. Feel free to take one of our UDFA’s and have them switch places. Now, does that make a difference?
I’m more concerned about this new red wine spot on my shirt. At the end of the day the roster would still be the same.

basically the same thing dude only difference is whether there's a blitz on or not that forces him to dump it off faster. but you go ahead & split hairs.
you just explained why they AREN'T the same thing.
Check down is when the primary guy(s) (speaking from a play design standpoint) are covered and you need/want to salvage something from a play that the defense had covered well. The check down options are usually the RB or TE.

Hot read is when the QB sees - pre-snap - that the rushers outnumber your blockers and he wants to get the ball out of the QBs hand in a hurry. It's an audible, not the original called play. Also, when the QB goes to the hot read option all the receivers should cut their routes short and give the QB a quick option to throw to. A hot read guy could be anybody.

I can see Watson being tardy on check downs because he wants to give the original play a chance to develop.
But if he's calling actual hot reads and missing those.....

Is today the day we get some OTA news?!
here's a few pictures from HT.com

This is a bold statement before pads have even been put on. You don't go around saying stuff like this or you lose credibility.

Maybe we got ourselves a good value player. If he can play offense and fly around making plays on special teams, I will gladly take that in return for using a 7th on him.

A goal line lead blocker could be construed as a role in the offense. Not a stretch nor that big of a deal. There were probably a dozen other guys that went undrafted that could do the same thing. A meh pick then and a meh pick now.

A 7th round pick a lower cost than a UDFA? Nah, man. Gillaspia got over $100K guaranteed. None of the UDFAs got that much.

Pretty sure he was drafted for loftier goals, IMO. Such as ST gunner and hopefully a ST captain judging by the hiring of Seely and the great improvement in ST last year. There are a lot of interesting changes taking place with the Texans. I don’t care what most here think. I’m not a Pom Pom fan. I’m only deeply interested in the GM thought process of constructing a SB capable team. There are signs if people care to look.

He's not coming in to be JUST a lead blocker. He might not even be a good one. He's 230, I believe. Pat believes he's more athletic than he was given credit for at TAMU.

He is going to be a pass catcher with the possibility of blocking. He will also be someone who flies around the field on special teams.

I stand corrected, avg. being 45,000 guaranteed. Pick makes even less sense to me then? Remember Gaine calling him one of the most outstanding special team player in the nation, so will slow my role and aggravation not adding more positional depth.

As parallel Colts took OT and Center in 7th rd. Maybe Gillaspia makes immediate impact and special teams actually help win a couple games and we call it worth it. Meanwhile divisional rival OL adds depth on the cheap.

Also, why have the Texans held on to Roderick Johnson? They signed him, cut him and then signed him back.

He has the measurables for the LT position but everything else about him is bad.

Maybe he's Devlin's project or something like Keenum was for Kubes.

Don't sell yourself short. You've got a lot of Pom Pom in you.

Your lack of understanding is tangible. Anyone that ever built anything always had to put up with the malcontents. This isn’t year six of the process. Can’t help you otherwise.

Brother you have got to stop attacking everything that moves. There is a lot of history on this site and some of the very people you attack are the same ones that have in past made the exact arguments you are making. Chill out, get a feel for the people around here and realize they are more than just the few posts you have seen since you joined a month ago. Lot of people still pissed about the Colts game and now the draft so you are seeing a lot of that anger and seem to be thinking that's how everyone is all the time. At least go through a full season on here before lashing out.

Not sure why a guy like this bothers people..If he is cut, the Texans probably just going to sign another version of the same "maybe two years from now we get a Kendall Lamm season" guy. He was drafted player (5th round cleveland ) with some record of production in college way worse dart throws to keep fighting for the practice squad...
