2019 Texans free agency

Biggest problem with a Walker type deal ever happening again is the current Free Agency that was created in 93. Since then you really haven't seen the big deal trades like that any more since players can just hold out on teams till they are F/A or teams can just go shopping to fill spots with stop gaps. Also it helps to have someone like a Jimmy Johnson to pull off a move like that. There are very few in the NFL today I think could do it and none of them are working for the Texans.

LOL I just posted this and then read more of the thread and saw this. I’m way behind today

"A winning culture. It’s a great spot for me, I was born in Texas. New scenery, I want to compete for another ring, I just wanted to go somewhere where I could get another one." #Texans new CB Bradley Roby on why he chose Houston. Team has officially announced the signing. @KPRC2

BOB learned from the best and has done a good job IMO with bringing in many of the same qualities - good culture, doesn't put up with player's trash, similar talent acquisition strategy which is the only way to build a long term contender with the rules as is. The problem is that BOB hasn't been able to get the most out of these bargain bin players like Beli has. Brady makes the job easier for Beli. Maybe with some growth out of Watson, and BOB having learned a little over the years we can be on the same path. It's still all going to boil down to if BOB can put this all together on the field and BOB's going to have to improve for that to happen.

Report: Houston Texans Come Up Short on Landing Rodger Saffold

byPatrick D. Starr
The Houston Texans lose out in negotiations to the Tennessee Titans for offensive lineman Rodger Saffold.

With all the news flying around on the Houston Texans and their two new additions to the secondary, it appears they were also in the hunt for offensive lineman Rodger Saffold. Saffold ended up signing a 4-year $44 million deal ($22 million guaranteed) with AFC South rival, the Tennessee Titans. The Texans were laying low on their needs for the offensive line, but it is clear they felt Saffold was an upgrade somewhere on offensive line. NFL Network’s Mike Silver reported that the Titans beat out the Texans for the veteran offensive lineman.

Saffold started for the Los Angeles Rams at left guard and was part of one of the most explosive offenses in the NFL. Saffold has appeared in 114 regular season games for the Rams since 2010 playing every position on the offensive line except center.

The bigger issue is that the Texans knowing they needed to improve the offensive line did not finish the deal to land Saffold who jettisoned for the Titans. General manager Brian Gaine signed offensive tackle Seantrel Henderson, offensive guards Zach Fulton and Senio Kelemete prior to the 2018 season and the pursuit of Saffold shows that the Texans were ready to upgrade somewhere on the offensive line and maybe replace one of their free agents they signed just the season before.

Either way, it shows that the Texans are not willing to sit still to improve their offensive line, but losing out on Saffold is not the best outcome for an offensive line that could use some slight adjustments.

Pretty much proof of our "reporters" being homers, lapdogs and apologists for the Texans FO.

Fail by mr Bailey for not posting or even asking Roby why he feels he didn’t play his best last year.

Ehh not really. I think they’re just acknowledging what many on here and elsewhere have said: that there wasn’t a whole lot out on the FA market to get that would have significantly upgraded this o-line.

This franchise is so pathetic I swear.

Watson better leave if he knows what is good for him unless he wants to end up like AJ and Watt where he never plays for a contender his entire career.

The Texans are run nothing like the Pats are.

I mean the Pats had a hole at WR and traded for Gordon last year. Could you ever see the Texans doing that? I mean they need a RB and passed on Hunt. If the Pats needed RB then Hunt would be a Pat.

Yep

As long as fans are content showing up at NRG for the beer and BBQ things will remain the same.

We did go get Thomas when we needed a #2 WR. But I get your drift.

The print beat reporters and all 4 major networks here, but especially channel 13 due to their closer relationship, are completely in the tank propagandist's for the Texans. It's like Pravda.

And 610, because they are the Texans flagship is nearly as bad. Sometimes I hear some honest analysis, but John Harris and Marc V are complete propaganda machines that do nothing but spew the sunshine and rainbows coming direct from Kirby.

The press doesn't need to be nasty, negative, and adversarial for the sole sake of being provocative or to try and garner ratings. But OTOH, neither should it be nothing but a sunshine pumping propaganda machine full of Texans spin.

Tell the freaking truth media! This FA period is a total embarrassment and an epic fail. But you'll never hear that anywhere that counts. If the media doesn't hold the Texans feet to the fire, you'll never see change on Kirby. Expect more of the same mediocrity in perpetuity.

We just needed a receiver and traded a 4th for Thomas. Things are changing on Kirby.

This is Houston media we're talking about though. They've always been terrible. Look at our beat writers. We have McClain and the black guy with the glasses (Can't remember his name). Before that we had that terrible Nick Wright in our talk radio. Everything has always been vanilla in this city media wise, and all of the radio channels and columnists kiss up to the organization to get their scoops and their access. None of them really want to shake up conversation around the town if it will potentially hurt the relationship with the Texans. We need some assholes in our sports media.

Edit: Solomen is the other reporter. I remembered now.

What about trading for Thomas?

We did exactly the kind of thing the Pats would do. We made a reasonable move on an available player who could help us. He got hurt. No one could have foreseen this.

Gordon didn’t end up helping the Pats even as much as Thomas did the Texans. No sense worrying about solid moves that didn’t pan out. The NFL is full of teams that happens to.

Actually picking up Thomas was a much smarter and better move for the Texans than the Pats picking Gordon. Gordon had risk written all over him, and ended up becoming ineligible to play for like the 18th time leaving the Pats high and dry. To make matters worse the Pats are actually bringing Gordon back after he let them down so badly last season. The Pats don't make all smart moves. They make plenty of stupid ones too. Thomas was a good move for the Texans.

That's not anywhere close to what Starr was saying in the bolded: an offensive line that could use some SLIGHT adjustments

Well Compared to the complete overhaul on the o-line Texans fans want to see (not gonna happen) landing just 1-2 premium talents along the o-line In the draft as day 1 starters...well that is a slight adjustment. But as we saw with Indy this past year...Dallas a few years back, doing just that could dramatically improve your o-line play.

Now Obviously, that premium talent wasn’t out there to be had in FA this year & I think the FO and the article is just saying that the FO ultimately did the right thing by not backing up the brinks truck for Brown or Saffold..they were ultimately proven to be right not to do so for Solder last year and I think if we can hit on a premium talent or 2 in the draft, Rankin improves in his 2nd year, the o-line can be much better in 2019.

Jason Verrett has signed with the 49ers in case someone is interested.
I wonder if we even offered him $4m or a incentive filled deal. Could be he wanted to go there, but this guy seemed to fit the risk/reward strategy and I wanted him. We would have a defensive backfield filled with guys playing for something and chips on their shoulders. With Verrett it only would have mattered had he stayed on the field, dude has had a lot of issues but can play

Yes, the problem, of course, is hitting the premium guys in the draft, but I agree that the current issue is that the Texans best guys should be the 4-5 best starters or reserves...If the Texans add two quality players that closes the gap significantly...in short if Zach Fulton is you 4th best lineman then that's fine as the best guy not so much.

The Colts addressed 3 new starting OL last offseason, not to mention depth.

Colts’ Offensive Line Looking To Impose Their Will On Defenses

The Cowboys have routinely added quality talented offensive lineman every season for years.

Dale Robertson was the shaker asshole in the sports media in his time.

I think the Clowney trade will go something like this Buffalo trades #9 and # 40 for Clowney and #23.

What value could we get in a trade for Clowney? Maybe a 1st and a player?
How about the Texans trade to BUF for 1rnd 9th overall and OLmen or CB.
Then sign Justin Houston at LB to a deal.
They should sign Houston anyway. They don't get enough pressure on the qb.

I would say a swap of 1st round picks (#23 for #9) and then add a 3rd this year or 2nd next year.
If we get a high 1st we need to trade down with it. This year we need quantity more than top ranking, because we're not in the market for a QB, but rather several good if not great plug-ins for OL and secondary.

I think the Clowney trade will go something like this Buffalo trades #9 and # 40 for Clowney and #23.
So that implies you think Clowney is worth the 14th overall pick in 2019 Draft. FYI the Chiefs just traded Dee Ford to San Fran and all they got was a 2nd round pick in the 2020 Draft.
