NFL Random Thought of the Day

After an "indefinite suspension," amazing how arbitrary the NFL can be when they want to keep an "attraction" in the league.

Report: NFL wants Gordon to go 2-3 months without a red flag test
Posted by Michael David Smith on April 12, 2016, 9:21 AM EDT

Browns receiver Josh Gordon’s latest failed drug test will reportedly delay his reinstatement into the NFL, but not so long that he can’t be there for the start of the regular season.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Gordon’s potential reinstatement will be delayed until the NFL has seen that he can go 60 to 90 days without a red flag drug test.

Gordon, who is currently suspended and has been for more than a year, appeared to be close to reinstatement until someone leaked the news yesterday that he has failed another drug test. Gordon’s most recent testing issue is that he turned in a diluted urine sample, which is considered a positive test under the NFL’s drug-testing rules. That sample also showed trace amounts of marijuana metabolites, but less than the 35 nanograms per milliliter level that constitutes a positive test in the NFL.

So now Gordon will have to submit clean, non-diluted samples for two or three months, suggesting that he could be reinstated in June or July if he’s able to fully comply. If he is reinstated, the Browns instantly add one of the most talented wide receivers in the NFL to their roster — but they’ll have to wonder how long he can keep himself eligible to play.

Now the NFL has decided that they will not consider his reinstatement until at least August...........well after most of Cleveland's player preps have already occurred.

There is no lack of idiots in the NFL.

Arrest warrant issued for Rams running back Tre Mason
Posted by Mike Florio on April 13, 2016, 12:18 PM EDT

The last NFL player to be arrest apparently is the next one to be arrested.

Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports that Rams running back Tre Mason failed to appear for a hearing on Monday in Broward County, Florida criminal court. A warrant has now been issued for Mason’s arrest.

Mason had been arrested last month for suspicion of possession of marijuana, reckless driving, failure to register a motor vehicle, and resisting arrest. His arraignment had been set for Monday.

On March 5, police used a stun gun to subdue Mason after he drove away from officers who were trying to pull him over for speeding. When he was finally pulled over, Mason tried to “brace himself” in the car and exhibited “great resistance” to efforts at removing him.

A third-round pick in the 2014 draft, Mason had been expected to report for the start of the offseason program next week.

Rams gave up two 1st round picks 2016 (15th) and 2017, two 2nd round picks (43 & 45) both in 2016, and two 3rd round picks 2016 (76) and 2017.

Tennessee gave up #1 overall in 2016, a fourth round pick (113) and a sixth round pick (177) both in 2016

Rams moving to LA probably want to make a big splash with a new QB, Wentz I'm guessing, and the Titans can still get a very good OT at #15.

Geeze. Fisher made fun of washington and he did the same thing.

Never saw that coming

He made fun of Washington because they ruined RGIII. I doubt he plans on sending his new QB in with a QB run heavy offense on a bum leg.

Again, it wasn't the trade he was making fun of, it was the results.

I figured he made fun of washington when he sent out all the draft picks he got from them to do the coin toss

Yes, that's the when he did it. Not the what he was making fun of.

Had RGIII never got hurt & continued on the path to be a stellar QB, it wouldn't have been funny at all if RGIII was responsible for carrying his team to four division titles & multiple play off wins. However, since RGIII was on the bench for that game & pretty much a joke... it was funny.

Report: State attorneys will take second look at McCoy case
Posted by Zac Jackson on April 16, 2016, 1:16 PM EDT

The Pennsylvania Attorney General’s office will take a second look into a February fight involving Bills running back LeSean McCoy and off-duty police officers, NBC 10 in Philadelphia reported Saturday.

Earlier this month, Philadelphia District Attorney Seth Williams declined to file charges against McCoy and three friends who were allegedly involved in the fight, citing insufficient evidence.

The NBC 10 report said the police union wrote the state attorney general’s office asking for a review of the decision, and that request was granted. That means state attorneys will review evidence to determine whether they think it overwhelmingly supports charges. If so, the attorney general’s office could ask a court to overturn the initial decision by Williams and pursue charges against McCoy.

NFL Network reported earlier this week that McCoy likely will not face discipline from the NFL under the personal conduct policy for the incident. It’s unclear if further legal review of the case will affect that.

The Broncos problems don't seem to be letting up.

Von Miller won’t attend offseason program
April 16, 2016, 2:02 PM EDT

Broncos linebacker Von Miller may have some explaining to do to cornerback Aqib Talib.

Talib recently claimed that Miller said he’ll attend the offseason program. Miller reportedly is telling everyone else he won’t be there.

Mike Klis of 9News.com reports that Miller has told coach Gary Kubiak that Miller won’t be present for the start of the offseason program due to his absence of a contract.

It’s not surprising; as an unsigned franchise player, Miller isn’t under contract and thus not employed by any NFL team. His only leverage is to withhold services, and he apparently plans to.

That still may not be the smartest (or safest) approach. If Miller signs a letter of protection and participates in the offseason program, he’ll get the full $14.129 million franchise tender if he suffers a season-ending injury. If he works out on his own and tears an ACL, he’s SOL.

Last year, Broncos G.M. John Elway publicly expressed frustration about the decision of franchise-tagged receiver Demaryius Thomas to stay away from offseason workouts while unsigned. The practice of players staying away likely will continue, however, until a player does indeed pop an Achilles and in turn loses the full amount of what he would have made if the same injury had happened on team property.

For Miller, the primary risk of injury currently comes from his ongoing participation in ABC’s Dancing with the Stars. For the player and the team, July 15 is the deadline for working out a multi-year deal.

Eagles trade up with Browns and get #2 pick
Browns get:
- 8th pick
- 3rd rd pick (#77)
- 4th rd pick (#100)
- 2017 1st rd pick
- 2018 2nd rd pick

Eagles get
- 2nd pick
- 2017 4th rd pick

so does this mean Goff to LA and Wentz to Philly?

I don't understand what the Eagles are doing. They have over 35 million invested in the QB position already. A rookie QB will likely put it over 50 mill. They're going to roll with one of the worst defenses in the league, I reckon

They'll try to trade Bradford, but if they can't then yeah

Gonna be interesting in any case

I don't think they'll trade him. I think the Eagles would still be on the hook for 11 mill. Unless they'd want to pay him 11 mill to play for someone else

Chip will give them a second and a second next year and they'll happily eat 11 mill :D

they roll with Breakable Bradford this year then dump him next year. Wentz should be ready to take the reigns by then.

Over-investing at the QB position is a lot better than under-investing *cough <Fitz/Hoyer/Mallet/Savage> cough*

Sure, if you have the supporting cast. They'd be the worst defense in the NFL if it weren't for the Giants. Their oline blows, Ryan 'Tapout' Mathews is their primary back.

In the end, I don't really care. It's the Eagles. But, I'd be pretty upset if it was the Texans doing this

According to overthecap They're still $10M under for 2016 with 71 players currently under contract. Good thing they don't have a lot of draft picks to try to sign.

Next year, they're $5M under with 47 players under contract. They'll probably have to get creative &/or lose someone they really don't want to.

The Eagles will ride Bradford this year with Daniel to take over when he inevitably gets hurt. Then they get rid of Bradford after the season and let Wentz compete with Daniel.

Their defense isn't all that terrible. They are switching to a 43 under Schwartz, and it fits their personnel better.

RE - Brandon Graham, Marcus Smith
NT - Bennie Logan, Beau Allen
DT - Fletcher Cox, Taylor Hart
LE - Connor Barwin, Vinny Curry
WLB - Mychael Kendricks
MLB - Jordan Hicks
SLB - Nigel Bradham
CB - Nolan Carroll, Eric Rowe, Leodis McKelvin, Ron Brooks
S - Rodney McLeod, Malcolm Jenkins, Ed Reynolds, Chris Maragos

That's a very solid two deep for that system. In fact, if they hit LB and CB in the draft I'd say that could be one of the better defenses in the league.

They have two solid RBs. They should probably add something there at some point but it doesn't have to be this year. They have two solid TEs. They have one good WR, but their #2 was a first round pick last year so I'm sure they think he will improve. They could stand to add another guy there. Their OL was a mess last year but they addressed it in FA and it looks tons better now. They should still hit that unit multiple times in the draft if they can.

But overall, they seem much improved over last season. And in that division they could even make the playoffs. They are one of the few teams that I think can actually stand to make a move like this without crippling the roster.

:kubepalm:

RGIII has a new catch phrase
April 21, 2016, 4:01 PM EDT

Three years ago, he was “All In For Week One” as he executed “Operation Patience.” Now, quarterback Robert Griffin III has a new catch phrase.

“No pressure, no diamonds.”

It was Griffin’s exit line from his introductory press conference with the Browns. At the time, some league insiders pointed to that moment as evidence that Griffin still doesn’t get it. However, I opted to not make a big deal about it, given the signs that the previously non-self-aware RGIII was changing, evolving, maturing. But then he used the phrase again on Thursday, when talking about advice he would give to incoming rookie quarterbacks.

“The only advice I would have is what I said with my mic drop last time, ‘No pressure, no diamonds,'” Griffin said.

Apart from an apparent effort to create a new catch phrase, Griffin referred to his own mic drop as a “mic drop.” Which seems to be a breach of the unofficial rules of “mic drop.” (This time, he didn’t drop the mic after mentioning that he dropped the mic the first time he said, “No pressure, no diamonds.”)

Meanwhile, Rex Ryan already is evaluating the possibility of stealing “no pressure, no diamonds” as a T-shirt slogan for 2017. Especially since there’s currently a chance that Ryan will be working at a jewelry store at this time next year.

Victor Cruz underwent patellar tendon rupture surgery (same as Duane Brown) in Oct 2014. He required 10 months rehab to return to any offseason practice. During one of his first "real" practices in late Aug 2015 sustained a strained calf muscle. Through mid Nov 2015, he had difficulty being able to run at any more than 75% full speed at which time he sustained a severe tear of the calf muscle which required surgery. He now 6 months later, her claims that he is 100%, although without a sustained real game season play, I would be guarded about his ability to return to previous level and to stay on the field. It will be interesting to see how at age 30 and after his serious injuries he progresses after basically 2 years away from the game come the regular season.

Luckily Brown very rarely will be running at full speed.

How do you feel Brown's leg will hold up to a constant max force resistance against 300 plus men?

I can't add to the numerous previous posts on Brown's prognosis. But common sense would tell one that huge resistance will repeatedly stress and test the repair...............we have a long way to go before we see the situation and its results.

Time to draft a LT of future, hopefully not the LT of the future.

In Gary Kubiak’s first season as the Broncos head coach, the team brought in Owen Danielsas a familiar face at tight end.

Daniels, who played for Kubiak in Houston and Baltimore, was released in March, but Kubiak will still have some familiarity at the position. The team announced Monday that they have signed Texans tight end Garrett Graham to a one-year deal.
