TEXANS VS FALCONS INJURY REPORT

S
After pectoralis repair, a smart medical/training staff will strongly recommend that that player never go back to very heavy lifting with low reps ever again.
So a balanced offense will help keep Mallett on the field. That's good.

I wonder if "shoulder" is OB-ese for "knee" re Clowney.

I'm not sure that I've ever posted this before, but something to keep in mind about the NFL Injury Reports that I found out last year from a past NFL team doctor............If a player has more than one injury, the team may choose to list only the most serious one which at the time most threatens his ability to show for the game. The team is not penalized for not revealing both injuries. Obviously, some teams play it straight and identify all injuries, while others will play around with the Injury Reports and it's difficult to definitively identify/prove this, even for the League.

Surely Bill Belichik, I mean O'Brien would do no such thing!!

Not to beat a dead horse, but how is it, a professional organization that has had the first round pick in 3 of it's 14 years and pays millions to the employees engaged in selecting players, does not have a franchise QB? Is it the owner who keeps falling in love with defensive players, his flunky son, the GM, what? How can we fans see this so clearly and the front office not see this?

Personally, I would have gone for the QB from Washington state, QB, Halliday. We could have picked him up cheap. 734 Passing yards in one game---NCAA record.

The guy who went undrafted, got signed by the Redskins, and then got cut for not reporting to minicamp? That's the guy you want?

Ironically, that passing record he broke had belonged to David Klingler. He was pretty good in the pros wasn't he? No? Perhaps a single performance in college doesn't indicate success at the pro level?..

I guess it could be worse for the Texans. You could be in charge...

The only member I'd put in charge of the Texans...

And he'll zing you if you step in it, too.

Mike Mohamed emphasized that he wants to get back on the field this year he has a strained calf

[*]Mike Mohamed expressed frustration with going on injured reserve said he's nearly recovered is contemplating pursuing injury settlement

It is evident that Mohamed has no concept of a severe calf injury. When a player feels he is "almost" ready to return, especially when he's never had one to deal with before, he is usually underestimating his injury and prognosis.

Per Aaron Wilson;
Texans quarterback Ryan Mallett practiced on a limited basis Wednesday, listed on the injury report with a chest injury.

Mallett practiced again Thursday.

Texans coach Bill O’Brien downplayed the severity of the injury. Mallett had a torn pectoral last season that sidelined him.

“He practiced today,” O’Brien said. “He’s fine.”

HOUSTON TEXANS

Thursday (10/1/15)

DID NOT PARTICIPATE
S Lonnie Ballentine Knee
ILB Akeem Dent Hamstring
RB Jonathan Grimes Knee

LIMITED PARTICIPATION
G Brandon Brooks Ankle (identified as left)
T Duane Brown Hand
OLB Jadeveon Clowney Shoulder
RB Arian Foster Groin
CB Johnathan Joseph Hip (new.....evidently sustained in practice; I have to be suspicious of this very possibly being a reflection of the hip condition known as femoro-acetabular impingement (FAI). You may remember my previous posts in the context of sports hernias. 86% of athletes with sports hernias were found in a study to have this condition. Many sports hernia problems were resolved by FAI hip surgery alone, while all were resolved with surgical repair of both conditions at the same sitting or in staggered approach. Joseph underwent not 1 but 2 sports hernia repairs in 2012. Sports hernias may manifest with symptoms of anterior hip pain. FAI presents with symptoms of hip pain. Having undergone both right and left sports hernia repairs, the possibility exists, not only for a recurrence of one of the hernias, but also a flare up of either hip. Just thinking this through.....through the eyes of a surgeon )
QB Ryan Mallett Chest
T Derek Newton Ankle

FULL PARTICIPATION
S Eddie Pleasant Thigh
G Xavier Su'a-Filo Calf

ATLANTA FALCONS

Thursday (10/1/15)

DID NOT PARTICIPATE
RB Tevin Coleman Ribs (don't hold your breath)
TE Jacob Tamme Concussion (very iffy)

LIMITED PARTICIPATION
S Ricardo Allen Knee
RB Devonta Freeman Toe (hopefully slows him down some from last week)
WR Devin Hester Toe (with such a long history of this injury, would not be surprised if he doesn't play.....and if he doe, I don't expect to see Devin Hester)
WR Julio Jones Toe/Hamstring (the combination could slow him down this game, and he could easily aggravate either of these injuries)
LB Brooks Reed Groin (if he makes an appearance, it is more likely to be a token one because of it being the Texans....would not expect him to bring much)

Did anyone else immediately think of last year's torn-pectoral fiasco, upon hearing about Mallett's chest injury?

Evidently, you haven't bothered reading the previous INJURY REPORT or subsequent posts.

CloakNNNdagger said:

I strongly suspect that this is a function of a mild strain of his pectoralis muscle after ~100 passes over the last 2 games. I doubt that the Texans would make the same mistake they did originally by not checking out every aspect of his pec before letting him even go "Limited." Getting some relative rest by decreasing his reps temporarily in practice, undergoing therapeutic treatments, and getting some good help on the field that will allow him to return to a more reasonable number of passes next game, should allow him to get back to normal. All of this becomes that much more important, since we have another game against the Colt only 4 days later.

To answer your other question. Following a pectoralis rupture repair, a re-rupture would be extremely unlikely this far out.

After reading Doc's post on JoJo, looks like Rick made another brilliant re- signing of JoJo. (Schaub all over again) Does Rick even consult with the med staff before making moves like these?

Even if this injury isn't as bad as Doc suspects, it looks like it's only a matter of time before JoJo goes down again. How many yrs was the extension and what's the cap hit?

"I still think I have some better years ahead of me," Joseph told ESPN.com last week. "I think this will probably be my best season just from being healthy, being able to go through a full OTA session, being in this defense for a second year and obviously having great players around me." JoJo

I get a kick out of O'Brien when we ask him about injuries. He looks like he's getting a proctology exam. Squirms. Uncomfortable.
I sympathize with him. I rely on the professional advice of experts and only seek to determine whether I have chosen good experts by asking questions. I know that I don't know. At least I don't have a bunch of reporters who are repeatedly asking the wrong person about injuries. When it comes to medical opinions, I'm a middleman at best.

OB is the same with the added pressure of managing the expectations of the fans, the opponents, the ignorant and avoiding the traps of the legal sharks.

Somewhat curious why Jake Long, who was cleared only Sept 8 to return to play (and not signed by the Falcons until Sept 18), after his 2nd torn right ACL in 2 years, has not been listed on the Injury Report. The Falcons are trying to work him in as a swing tackle, and possibly to eventually compete for the RT position. Reports are out saying that he is still rehabbing from his ACL surgery and conditioning. Again curious no Injury Report listing.

No new bonus. Reduced this year's salary and then guaranteed 2015 and 4.5 of 2016 and added '16-17. He can be dropped with no dead money after '16.

I believe the team gave Joseph a $1.5m signing bonus with the extension. $3m of the 2016 salary is GTD. $4m dead in 2016 and $500k dead in 2017. My opinion, Spotrac's information is incorrect.

At the time I was thinking "If he can play then why in the hell isn't he a Texan?" but if he still can't play then maybe I'm glad the Texans didn't take a chance on him.

O'Brien says Arian Foster and Duane Brown will be game-time decisions
Dale Robertson @sportywineguy
Lonnie Ballentine, Jonathan Grimes and Akeem Dent will not play on Sunday. BOB wants Xavier Su'a-Filo to play.

Dent injury explains the ILB adds, JD's shoulder probably prompted Kourtnei's return.

Grimes should have been rested for at least a week and, since he wasn't able to participate in a full-contact practice shouldn't have played last game....setback.

Hope Kourtnei isn't trucked in the run game if he's put in.

After the previous reports this week that D. Brown would definitely be there Sunday, may have become evident that the thumb fracture and/or the protective ware is significantly affecting his grip when trying to effectively handle the D. Hopefully, contact did not set him back again.

Dale Robertson ‏@sportywineguy
Foster is confident "the attachment" (his groin muscle to the pelvic) is going to hold.

Foster says the doctor "that cut me open" told him "best rehab is getting out there and playing."

Arian wants to play and it looks like there's good chance he will.

PDS @PatDStat
Game four has always been the target date for Arian Foster. We have maintained that since the start of his rehab.

The short week has been the focus ,the reason people are worried. I don’t think that plays into the decision making for Sunday or the season

Most forget he has been running for over a month. Not like they are just rolling him out there with no work.

I don’t feel the short week applies to Foster’s situation, much less into the decision making on saving him.

I would be surprised if Arian Foster does not play on Sunday in some capacity.

That's all well and good, but running for even 2 or 3 months proves nothing. And it certainly does not in any way simulate live contact action. I don't believe that first contact should be in a regular game. And I do believe that a short week following first contact regular game does make a difference.

He may make it through, but the wisdom to such an approach is very questionable.

Wouldn't it depend on how much they used him? I think he'd be fine if they wanted to use him in a complimentary role (and assuming that they were willing and able to stick to that in light of whatever Blue did or did not accomplish). Get him dressed on the sidelines and maybe a few carries in the game if things are going well. That all seems safe enough as long as they don't get in trouble and start thinking that they can lean on him to get a win. I'd rather they face the Colts with a healthy Foster and a 1-3 record than go into that game 2-2 without him.

If he were truly ready to go, why wouldn't they have had him as a Full participant in a contact practice, which can still be controlled to some extent? Makes no sense. Then to supposedly put him in for even limited plays in a regular game (where there is not telling what situations he will come up against with a D that would try to kill him as soon as look at him), and then think his body is going to be recovered enough in 4 days. It's difficult enough to recover in a week for players that have been conditioned to take trauma playing in regular games all along (most of them through the preseason), but for a guy that has been playing make-believe only thus far, especially one who has had such a long history of soft tissue injuries (BTW of which sports hernia is one).............

I think he'll get a handful of reps. Grimes has been ruled out and we haven't promoted anyone. Are we willing to go into a game with only Blue & Polk? He'll either get a few reps or he'll be suited up as an emergency RB, imo

Arian Foster: 'When you're first coming back, I guess, you don't want to do all the drills, but I'm a full participant in all the practices'

"I guess?" I've never heard so much nonsensical philosophical play-with-words BS re. rehab from injury.

Aaron Wilson ‏@AaronWilson_NFL 5h5 hours ago

Arian Foster on playing Colts on short week: 'It gets taken into consideration. We're cognizant of that. We'll move forward accordingly.'

Being "cognizant of that" and being "smart about it" in the Texans' history have tended to be very different concepts .

It would be boring if there's no Arian Foster or Andrew Luck when the Texans play the Colts on Thursday Night. But we have to focus on this Falcons game first. Although to be fair, that division game is more important and will hold more water at the end of the year when deciding who wins the AFC South division title. An out-of-conference game isn't as important.
