TEXANS VS FALCONS INJURY REPORT

According to Aaron Wilson Brooks is limping today, but HE states that HE is planning to play Sunday. If this is the case, it is unlikely to be a high ankle sprain. But since this is not the first time he's sprained his left ankle (Dec of last year), and on top of the fact that there is no official word as to the grade of sprain, I'd at least be guarded as to the possibility of return that soon. We'll need to wait for more information.

You'd think they'd at least do an MRI so they know what they're dealing with.

This, just like in the past, seems like they don't want to know until it's too late.

We don't know what they know or when they know it. For all we know, he's already had exploratory surgery.

Any updates on Mohamed floating around out there?

We have not been told much re. Mohamed's injury, other than he suffered a "calf strain." A Grade I tear will tend to require anywhere from 1-3 weeks rest before a player can return. His strain occurred on September 9th. So if he has not returned to practice by the end of this week, he has probably suffered a Grade II tear which will tend to require 3-6 weeks..............unless there has been a set back, in which case, recovery is typically ~30% longer than from the original injury. As I posted when Foster was dealing with his calf tear, these injuries are higher risk for re-injury than even the high recurrent risk hamstring tear. From my post when Arian suffered his calf strain in 2013.:
It is not uncommon for Grade II or III calf tears to require 2 - 3 months or more, because of ease of re-injury even during rehab.
And, unfortunately, it came to be. He suffered the injury the beginning of OTAs in May and was not able to return until Week I.

Texans right guard Brandon Brooks, walking with a slight limp after spraining his left ankle in Sunday's victory over Tampa Bay, expressed optimism about his chances of playing this Sunday.

"Very hopeful," Brooks said. "It's pretty much up in the air right now, but I am hoping to play. It's getting better, a little bit of swelling. It's not my first sprained ankle."

Brooks had designs on going back in the Bucs game after a trainer examined the ankle and then re-taped it and put his cleat back on, but he remained out.

"I just got rolled up on
; it's kind of day to day," Brooks said. "It's pretty painful, but it's part of the game. It's kind of a work hazard."

Filo is still limping. Looks like his initial high ankle sprain has led to a significant Grade II calf tear. Not good outlook for return anytime soon.

An additional comment re. Mohamed's calf tear (also as relates to Filo)............calf strains are notorious to following up compensatory injury(ies), especially if the player is brought along quicker than he is prepared to.

Parade All-American who won three state titles at Provo (Utah) Timpview and was the state's 4A Offensive Player of the Year as a senior. In 2009, was the first true freshman offensive player in UCLA history to start the season opener; started all 13 games at left tackle. Did not play the next two years while serving a two-year LDS mission in Alabama and Florida. Upon returning, started all 14 games at left guard in 2012. Started all 13 games in 2013, including seven at left guard, six at left tackle. Won the Morris Trophy, which is given to the most outstanding offensive lineman in the Pac-12, as voted on by the conference's defensive linemen. Was also voted the Bruins' offensive MVP. Team captain

Just a quick review of this guys college career at UCLA: team Offensive MVP, that's pretty impressive for an OLineman. Team Captain. Looks like he started/played in every game of every year he played while at UCLA but his career there was was interrupted by a 2-year sabbatical that Mormons routinely pull.
He's certainly been a big disappointment in the NFL/here in Houston but I see no red flags from that resume ? I dunno, how's a team to see any of that when evaluating a Draft prospect like Xavier ? There's too much promise there and too big of an investment to write this guy off just now IMO ?

More important is that many have criticized Filo for having a bad doughy body that may have gotten him through college, but that and lack of NFL strength would not carry him through at this level. It certainly didn't help when he reported totally out of shape and unconditioned.......a perfect recipe for poor performance and high risk for injuries. If he doesn't take seriously and put effort into changing the things that got him into this hole to begin with, we may find him counting his stolen money at home sooner than later.

Wait a second...

I thought that he was in good shape or had reported in good shape.

Except for the fact that the Texans put out a story about how he had shed that doughiness this offseason and added muscle.

This morning, McClain in fact stated that Filo came in out of shape, despite the reports to the contrary.

"Doughy body" would mean lack of muscle definition, somewhat overweigh? If the scouts missed something like that which ought to be obvious with the most simple, basic and casual inspection of the physique, then that's real bad. He did get 25 reps on the BP which I believe is solid for offensive linemen, so basic strength should not be issue ?
Re discerning a college players attitude which would account for a lack of motivation to achieve an acceptable level of condition is more difficult. That's an elusive intangible that's often real tough tough to define.

The scouts didn't miss it. It was in every amateur and professional scout about the guy. He's like a million other college OLmen who are described as needing to gain strength in the NFL. Now him being on an NFL weight and diet regimen for a year and failing to respond is another matter.

Actually McClain also reported this after his injury.

John McClain Verified account ‏@McClain_on_NFL 5:59 AM - 17 Sep 2015

Su'a-Filo reported out of shape, suffered a calf injury. He was 33rd overall pick n '14. Team still has high hopes 4 him when he's healthy

Keep in mind, he may have reported to OTAs in better shape...........BUT........a lot can happen during the lull between the last minicamp (June 18) and the first day of Training Camp (Aug 1)........over a 1 1/2 month period........when players are essentially left to their own to maintain their bodies. Those responsible will, those not, won't. And evidently Filo fell into the latter category.

McClain was not the only one that has reported that Filo reported to TC out of shape.

I'm not saying it hasn't been reported. I'm saying the narrative has changed and it makes me suspicious. They went out of their way to laud his offseason efforts and new svelte self during OTAs and then he reportedly shows up to TC a slob. Doesn't make much sense to me the guy would get in shape while largely working out on his own and then once under the eye be challenging McClain to pancake eating contests.

Yes, to be sure a very dubious honor.
Now this may come as a shock to some, but I have some bias when it comes to certain religions. The thing is Mormons are known to be very dedicated and industrious. I was just recently in Salt Lake a few days and was reminded what a fine group of citizens Mormons are. And this guy was a team captain, and voted the MVP on the offensive side of the ball. You don't be a team captain )especially a Mormon team captain) by goofing off and letting your teammates down. There is something fishy, suspicous about this whole thing re X's conditioning ? An injury can happent o anyone, but conditioning, I dunno, I got doubts here ?

So XSF comes into OTAs having worked to get in shape, but then shows up all of a sudden not ready for camp.

Then Mallett can't beat out Hoyer in closed practices, but we've all seen the difference on gamedays.

Then Strong comes in out of shape, works to get in shape and makes some preseason plays, but can't get himself activated during the season.

Now I'm the least 'conspiracy theory' kind of guy on the planet. It does though seem there's more than meets the eye when it comes to something that OB may be looking for in his players to get on the field. Is it just game shape or the playbook? Is it a demeanor or temperament? Is it a set of hoops only of OB's understanding that he wants younger players to meet before he trusts them on gamedays?

If we're 2-1 instead of 1-2 this is meaningless, but we're not. We need help on the o-line. We need wr's who can make plays. And we certainly needed better than Hoyer starting week 1.

Is this a legit narrative or have I taken crazy pills?

Based on recent history with how we seem to deal with injuries, I would not be surprised one bit if he did report in good shape but not fully healed from his injury. They cleared him to workout and got him re-injured, and are now trying to pass off blame on to him by saying that he was out of shape and that's why he's hurt again.

HOUSTON TEXANS

Wednesday (9/30/15)

DID NOT PARTICIPATE

S Lonnie Ballentine Knee (postop)
ILB Akeem Dent Hamstring (new, felt out of place not being on the list)
RB Jonathan Grimes Knee (lingering)

LIMITED PARTICIPATION
G Brandon Brooks Ankle (he said "not bad today"......not exactly a statement I want to hear when wanting to avoid re-injury)
T Duane Brown Hand (said "feels great"..........if not properly protected, re-injury likely.......will be limited in grip by combo of nature of injury and protective ware whatever he wears.)
OLB Jadeveon Clowney Shoulder (new, something to keep his mind off his knee)
RB Arian Foster Groin ("game time decision"......hope not, especially since he was "Limited" in what was likely the contact practice for the week......save him for Luck and company)
QB Ryan Mallett Chest (new. You can't continuous throw with your arm doing reps like a windmill in a hurricane, and not expect a consequence)
T Derek Newton Ankle (new, apparently in addition to a knee)

FULL PARTICIPATION
S Eddie Pleasant Thigh (new)
G Xavier Su'a-Filo Calf (if he plays Sunday, use your Bullock watching technique, close your eyes and hope when you open them again, he's still on the field)

ATLANTA FALCONS

Wednesday (9/30/15)

DID NOT PARTICIPATE
RB Tevin Coleman Ribs (unlikely Sunday)
WR Julio Jones Toe/Hamstring (played last week with a "mild" hamstring. Now this......a "little piggy goes to market"...........but a little bit slower)
TE Jacob Tamme Concussion (in the protocol from concussion beginning of last game, not expected to play Sunday)

LIMITED PARTICIPATION
S Ricardo Allen Knee
RB Devonta Freeman Toe (turf toes seem to be the staple of the day)
WR Devin Hester Toe (turf toe, already re-injured from before TC, doubt if we see him Sunday)
LB Brooks Reed Groin (still recovering from his 2nd sports hernia surgery Sept 3..............like Foster, probably not going to play Sunday)

Mallet and Clowney will likely play. Foster, I hope not.

Ditto. I think with Brown coming back the run game should be sufficient enough against the Falcons without Foster. Give him a few more days.

As far as injuries, what is your best guess with Mallet? Overuse just got him a bit sore? Or is that injury easy to get again? Especially with the way he winds up and chucks it, like you mentioned.

I strongly suspect that this is a function of a mild strain of his pectoralis muscle after ~100 passes over the last 2 games. I doubt that the Texans would make the same mistake they did originally by not checking out every aspect of his pec before letting him even go "Limited." Getting some relative rest by decreasing his reps temporarily in practice, undergoing therapeutic treatments, and getting some good help on the field that will allow him to return to a more reasonable number of passes next game, should allow him to get back to normal. All of this becomes that much more important, since we have another game against the Colt only 4 days later.

To answer your other question. Following a pectoralis rupture repair, a re-rupture would be extremely unlikely this far out.
