Uh wtf? You have Lovie Smith who is a highly-respected coach that has fielded good defenses and has gotten production out of cast-offs and mid-round picks but no...you rather go with a mediocre college coach.

More breaking news..Bills hired a local Albany High School coach to be their D Coordinator. He was 6-6 at St. Pius X this year.........:) .:tiphat:

If you are going to spend all that money on your D, you might as well get someone to coach them. This guy sounds like a Gailey clone to me.

I didn't know that he was the Saints offensive coordinator before last season. Knowing that, I don't think it's a terrible hire after all. I just assumed they cheaped out on some no-name random college coach. But he does have NFL coaching credentials.

If I'm looking at San Francisco, Seattle, or Indianapolis & know that I'm going to have a lot of young players on my roster soon...

yeah, I'm going to get a college coach. Someone who knows how to relate to these young'ns & can get them to produce quick.

I don't know about the mediocre college part.... probably would have gone with that guy in college station who seems to have a hot hand.

Well, everyone can think what they want about it (I actually think it's a pretty good hire), but for the record, he left the Saints after the '08 season (wasn't there during the Super Bowl season). This past year was his fourth as Syracuse HC.

This is a better hire than most realize. Those 'name' coaches include two fired coaches that blew much better rosters, especially Lovie Smith. Kelly is already staying put and I doubt Buffalo was ever in the running there. Whisenhunt sure did wonders with QB after Warner and the team badly regressed.

Marrone has NFL pedigree working with organizations (NO) that turned things around and made a terrible college program bowl-bound the last two years.

Sometimes the best hires are the least obvious. Mike Tomlin immediately comes to mind.

Whoops. Not sure why I thought he was only at Syracuse for one year. Either way, it does seem like a solid hire after all. The Saints didn't make the playoffs in 07 or 08 but I don't think that's his fault. Their defense was terrible those seasons, IIRC.

Doug Marrone quits Bills
Doug Marrone has opted out of his contract as coach of the Buffalo Bills and is now a free agent to pursue other jobs available in the NFL.

Marrone exercised the unique option during the final hours of a three-day window that opened Monday, stipulated in the four-year contract he signed with the Bills in 2013. The opt-out clause was included in the original contract in the event of an ownership change, which occurred when Terry and Kim Pegula purchased the franchise in October.

"We are disappointed that Coach Marrone will no longer be an important part of our organization," Bills owner Terry Pegula said in a statement. "We thank him for all of his hard work and leadership during his tenure and wish him and his family the best with the next chapter in their lives.

"We will now begin the important process of conducting a thorough search for a new head coach as we continue to strive to reach our goal of returning to the playoffs and bringing a championship to Buffalo for our fans."

While Marrone was negotiating an extension beyond the two years remaining on his four-year $16 million deal, uncertainty over potential organizational changes influenced his decision, according to sources.

Marrone's clause also allows him to walk with his 2015 guaranteed base salary of $4 million without it counting as an offset against any future salary even if he should land another job, sources said. Marrone now is free to negotiate with any team seeking a head coach.

Teams with current vacancies include the Chicago Bears, Atlanta Falcons, New York Jets, Oakland Raiders and San Francisco 49ers. When Marrone interviewed for a handful of jobs in 2013, he was offered the head coaching position by the Bills and Browns and was a finalist with other teams when he agreed to coach the Bills.

Bills sources believe Marrone could have particular interest in the Jets, where he once served as offensive line coach for four years. Sources say the Jets will have strong interest in Marrone.

While it is believed Marrone would take some of his assistant coaches with him, most of them have contracts through 2015, according to a team source. Defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz's deal is believed to run through 2016.

Under Marrone, the Bills went 6-10 and 9-7 while struggling to find a quarterback. E.J. Manuel was a first-round pick in 2013 who suffered injuries and eventually was benched after week four this season.

He did exactly as a player would do, exercised his option to his benefit. Buffalo is shaky at QB with Orton retiring, EJ Manuel not progressing, they have no 1st rd pick this year, new ownership could make things uneasy and Buffalo is a small market. Jets are shaky at QB but have stable ownership and the draw of the Big Apple market...No tampering if Casserly reached out to him before he was "officially" consulting for the Jets. Crossing the line -- National Football Post
Saturday, in the New York Daily News, New York Jets beat writer Manish Mehta wrote an article titled “NY Jets interview Doug Marrone, and with Bills, the average ex-coach rubbed many in the organization the wrong way”. After reading the article, I have one thing to say, it’s total garbage! In this year’s hiring cycle, I have seen media getting more involved with their opinions than at any other time in the past. In the case of Marrone and the Jets, all you have to do is follow Mehta’s tweets over the last week, and you see he is one who wants to sabotage the Jets possible hiring of Marrone. He doesn’t want Marrone to be the coach, so he will make his feelings known in any way possible.

There are some media who are very knowledgable people, have strong connections, and come up with excellent perspective in regards to some coaching/GM candidates. Mehta isn’t one of them. This article was nothing but an immature hack job. He quotes “sources” inside the Bills' front office, but names none. Were they the General Manager or CEO? I highly doubt it.

I know that Marrone had some problems with a couple of writers at the Buffalo News, but the people he had problems with, know absolutely nothing about football. He was criticized for being a conservative coach. What these people don’t realize is that Doug Marrone just coached the Buffalo Bills to their first winning season in 10 years, and they are complaining about it.

Going into the season, there wasn’t anyone around the league who felt the Bills had the slightest chance of having a winning season. Yet, 17 weeks later, we find that they swept the entire NFC Central which included two playoff teams, swept Mehta’s Jets by 20 and 35 points respectively, and also beat the New England Patriots.

The Bills did this with an average roster and a journeyman quarterback. The naysayers in the Buffalo media felt the Bills should have been in the playoffs. These people are dreamers. The reality is this team was not a playoff team and was also one of the better coached teams in the NFL. When you look at Mehta’s article, you see the same “quotes” that negative Buffalo writers have written or talked about on talk radio which leads me to believe that Mehta’s sources were his media friends.

After spending 30 years in the National Football League, I have no problem with a writer or a radio host giving solid informed opinions. I do have a problem when they write/talk about things they know nothing about. Some of these media types feel that they are better prepared to make the football decisions than the real football people. Most of these people never played or coached the game past high school, and if given the opportunity to make a decision, wouldn't know where to start. Mehta is one who would fit that category.

Thae fact is, Doug Marrone is highly thought of by respected football people throughout the National Football League. What Mehta is trying to do is manipulate the process with his writing when, in reality, it’s an area he knows nothing about. This type of “manipulation” does not go on just in New York. I have seen it in Chicago, where the Bears are in the process of hiring a new General Manager and Coach just as the Jets are. Being that I live in Chicago, I can’t believe the things I have been hearing about some of the candidates. They seem to pull names out of a hat and push those names, yet they know nothing about the people they are talking about.

They also do the opposite and criticize a candidate because of his “association” with someone they don’t like. That type of thinking is ludicrous. Each candidate has to be measured on his own merit and philosophy, not what his bosses or friends may have done in the past. In each organization, there is a chain of command. Top employees know where they stand in the chain and don’t sabotage what their boss is trying to accomplish. Their job may be to give their opinion, but in the end, the final decision rests in the hands of the decision maker. The subordinate shouldn’t be judged on those decisions but only on the input he had in that decision. Yet, many in the media seem to think the opposite. That’s not right.

In all journalism, there is a nasty trend which has developed. The sharp line which would not be crossed between reporting and commentary has been blurred to an almost indistinguishable blip. While we see this more often in sports, it is also happening in political "reporting" and "news: in general. Unfortunately it has also been accompanied by the reporting of rumors as if they were facts.
 
As the NFL world waits for the consistently inept Jets to hire a general manager and head coach, there’s this, from radio host Mike Francesa earlier today:

My understanding is, there were guys with the Jets, who already asked Woody to pick Marrone.

And Woody said no.

Woody didn’t have a great meeting with Marrone.

… I don’t think he’s going to be the Jet coach.

It’s not sourced – other than, “My understanding” – which means Francesa could be cobbling together bits of information he’s heard and read and just making an educated guess.

I heard a rumor earlier today saying the Jets wanted Dan Quinn (DC, Seattle), which wouldn't be a bad hire at all.

Woody Johnson's new vision for the Jets is coming into focus less than two weeks after the owner hit the reset button on his franchise.

Johnson and consultants Charley Casserly and Ron Wolf have targeted Texans director of college scouting Mike Maccagnan to be the Jets’ next general manager, according to sources, in the first step of an organizational restructuring plan that is looking increasingly likely to land them the hottest coaching candidate on the market, Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn.

I do. Massive upgrade over Marrone. Not perfect by any means but he is inheriting a ton of talent on that defense and I won't be shocked if they trade for Cutler too. Pegula sending a message to league that days of Bills being cheap are over.

I can't imagine we'd be as high on Ryan if he were our coach over the last six years.
 
I don't get Rex in Buffalo either.

I think Atlanta is the only team with a vacancy that would do well with him.

He apparently preferred Atlanta, but the owner waffled on giving him an offer on his way out of town. The owner wants Josh McDaniels, but it seems the FO has talked him into accepting a defensive minded coach albeit after Rex is already off the market.

The Bills have brought on an experienced offensive coach to help them develop EJ Manuel or another quarterback during the 2015 season.

The team announced Monday that Chris Palmer will join Rex Ryan’s staff as a senior offensive assistant.
