U.T. Charlie Strong clearing house

Much has been made this offseason about Charlie Strong laying down the law at Texas, and now we have some clarity on the discipline doled out to the players in question.

The Longhorns head coach said Sunday that offensive tackle Desmond Harrison, wide receiver Daje Johnson and safety Josh Turner have been suspended, per The Dallas Morning News' Chuck Carlton. All three players will miss one or more games, and each was expected to compete for a starting job. Turner was once reported to be booted from the team, but Strong said Sunday that he had never been dismissed.

Carlton tweeted that Strong also confirmed five players have been dismissed from the team: running backs Joe Bergeron and Jalen Overstreet and defensive back Chevoski Collins have been dismissed from the program and released from scholarship. Per Carlton, Strong said wide receivers Montrel Meander and Kendall Sanders, who are facing sexual-assault charges, have also been dismissed from team. The two wide receivers had previously been suspended indefinitely.

In his first season at Texas, Strong is making at least one thing very clear right off the bat -- off-the-field issues won't go unpunished.

Yeah I agree and he supposedly said he was not putting up with any shenannagins. Hopefully, he will get team back on track.

It's refreshing to see a coach who backs up what he says. But if they don't win it won't matter.

Yep winning is all that matters.

I agree with this on the NFL level. But disagree with this on the NCAA level.

Bye Martez.

I'll say this for Charlie Strong, he has to come in and pick up after a guy like Mack Brown. That's a hell of an undertaking.

Whoa. All I can say is good luck to him. I'm both happy for his good judgement and sad for him at the same time.

He can still get his degree, right?

He's still a part of the team and will travel and wear his uniform. But he won't have pads or a helmet. He can finish school.

From the way things look, it wasn't David's decision. Strong told him that he wasn't going to let him play anymore. Ash's parents agreed. I'm sure that's gonna be tough for David to swallow for a little while.

I'd hate to be any of the parties involved in that. Good for Strong for doing what's best for the kid instead of what's best for the team.

UT's Strong wants to play in Houston every season

University of Texas coach Charlie Strong's forays into Houston have thus far produced mixed results, with a loss in last December's Texas Bowl and the potential defection by one of four area players who signed with the Longhorns in February.

Nonetheless, Strong said Wednesday before a speech to the Touchdown Club of Houston that he plans to keep coming back to meet with alumni, potentially to recruit and, if he has his way, to play a football game each year.

Since the end of the Southwest Conference in the mid-1990s, Texas has played in Houston only four times - a single game against Houston, two games against Rice at NRG Stadium, and last season's 31-7 loss to Arkansas at the AdvoCare Texas Bowl. But Strong said Houston is a sufficiently important market to warrant more frequent visits.

"The last time we were here, things just didn't go well," Strong said. "But the thing we would like to do, and I know eventually it will happen, is that we come here on a consistent basis. Maybe we can get a game here, because we have so much support here with our fans. This is such a great alumni base. We go to Dallas now, and we'd just like to come here."

Asked if that would include games against UH or Rice or a neutral-site game against another school, Strong said, "Just anybody."
