ummmm......wait a minute....

Somerset native Bryan Witzmann is anxiously awaiting to see if he’ll be selected in this week’s 2014 National Football League Draft.

Witzmann, who completed his senior season at South Dakota State University last fall, was one of the most successful players in the history of the Jackrabbits’ program. He started more games than any player in program history, spending four seasons as the starting left tackle. Witzmann paved the way for SDSU running back Zach Zenner to rush for more than 2,000 yards each of the past two seasons.

Witzmann, listed at 6 feet, 7 inches and 311 pounds, has an outside chance of being taken in the later rounds of the NFL Draft. The draft will begin on Thursday and run through Saturday.

Max Bullough

Analysis

Strengths
Terrific football intelligence. Keys and diagnoses quickly, understands run fits and spills willingly. Physical -- good take-on/tackle strengh between the tackles. Pursues hard. Good tackler when he's able to square up ball carriers. Two-year captain with outstanding football character. Leads vocally and by example. Football is in his blood and approaches the game accordingly. His 30 bench-press reps were tied for most among linebackers at the combine.
Weaknesses
Average athlete. Not explosive. Tight hips (exposed in space). Limited foot speed, lateral agility and range. Can be late to the perimeter. Struggles in man coverage and is stiff dropping/turning in coverage. Non-explosive athlete: His 31-inch vertical and 9-foot, 3-inch broad jump were among the worst posted by linebackers at the combine.
Draft Projection
Rounds 4-5
Bottom Line
Big, tough, experienced, durable, competitive Mike linebacker who was a heart-and-soul type for the stingiest defense in college football. Like a coach on the field, Bullough is a throwback talent whose instincts and technique will have to compensate for athletic limitations for him to win a starting role.

Strengths: Chris Young's production at Arizona State is hard to ignore. He posted over 200 total tackles and 31.5 tackles for loss in two years. He always had a knack for finding the football and made several key plays for Arizona State over the course of the last two seasons. Young is a good tackler and has the ability to take on and shed blocks in his pursuit of the ball.

Weaknesses: Young is a bit undersized for the ILB position at the next level. He has to improve his coverage skills and he has to improve his ability to move laterally. Young ran a 4.85 40-yard dash, which is an average time for a linebacker.

I'll keep trying.

Tyrone Ezell

School: Pittsburgh

Position: DT

Positive: Two-year starter at nose tackle who collected 34 tackles, 3 tackles for loss, and 2 sacks last season. Quick, competitive gap occupier in the middle of the line. Fires off the snap, plays through the whistle, and quickly changes direction, Shows the ability to get down the line of scrimmage in pursuit. Works his hands throughout the play and holds his ground against blocks.

Negative: Marginally productive and not much of a playmaker. Average size and can be controlled by a single blocker.

Analysis: Ezell was a terrific complementary player to Aaron Donald on Pittsburgh's defensive line but lacks the athleticism to be anything other than a gap-occupying tackle in the NFL.

As much as I like Labhart (was a key part of the Aggies' offense this year), I don't think he's likely to make the team.
