Reliant Stadium to be renamed

MistaRed

Rookie
Reliant Park will soon be called NRG Park and Reliant Stadium NRG Stadium, after NRG Energy, the parent company of one of the largest electric retailers in the Houston area.

County sources say NRG, which acquired Reliant's retail operations in 2009, is planning a rebranding effort that will involve swapping out every sign bearing the Reliant name.

A related item is expected to appear on the next meeting agenda of the board of the Harris County Sports and Convention Corp., the agency that runs the county-owned park.

Reliant bought the naming rights for the Houston Texans' stadium and surrounding buildings in 2002 for $300 million, the most lucrative deal of its kind at the time.

The 32-year agreement required Reliant to pay about $10 million a year, with 75 percent going to the NFL team, 15 percent to the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo and 10 percent to Harris County.

NRG Stadium sounds kinda bland IMO

House Of Dread!!! :dread:

And now, introducing your 2014 Texans...

GDamnit! - who ordered the freaking vegetarian pizza?

I guess it's one of those cuts both ways kind of things. If your corporate BS stadium name sucks then at least you know that sooner or later that company will get bought or change its name, or go under and you'll get another shot at it. On the other hand I always thought Reliant Stadium wasn't too bad as these naming-rights stadium names go. At least it wasn't "Gallery Furniture Field at Save You Money Stadium". I'm sorry to see it go.

NRG Stadium does indeed sound like a good name for the Chargers home field. It doesn't really say Texans too much to me. Neither did Reliant Stadium but at least I was used to that. So does Reliant Park become NRG Park now? Are they going to save or tear down the NRG Astrodome?

Reliant Park may soon be called NRG Park and Reliant Stadium NRG Stadium, after NRG Energy, the parent company of the largest electric retailers in the state.

County sources say NRG, which acquired Reliant's retail operations in 2009, is planning a rebranding effort that will involve swapping out every sign bearing the Reliant name. The name change would apply to all facilities in the Harris County-owned park, including the Center, the Arena and the Astrodome, according to NRG.

A related item is expected to appear on the next meeting agenda of the board of the Harris County Sports and Convention Corp., the county agency that runs the park. No other entity needs to sign off on the deal.

Those terms remain the same.

In a statement, the NRG confirmed it is requesting authorization from the sports corporation to "rebrand Reliant Park and its related facilities, including Reliant Stadium, to NRG Park and NRG Stadium, respectively."

"As the second largest generator in Texas since 2006 and Reliant's parent company for four years, NRG Energy is no newcomer to Houston," the statement said. "We are hopeful that the HCSCC votes to approve the change during its board meeting on March 19, and we look forward to continuing our support of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, the Houston Texans and all of the park's events and activities."

Bleh , I don't care .... I don't go to the stadium because of the stadium or its name. I kinda find all this corporate crap in sports annoying and adding cost to the consumers bottom line in an already overpriced market.

At least it isn't Pro Players Stadium which isn't a bad name until you realize it's all about the underwear.

Other names that suck beyond just being a corporate name:

Monster Park (not horrible, but a bit cheesy for my taste. Kudos to the powers that be for letting the Stick to go out with it's original name)

Izod Center (Nets, Devils former home)

Minute Maid Park (oh well, better than Enron as it turns out :rake:)

Land Shark Stadium (formerly Joe Robbie, Pro Players)

LP Field (ok, but it's the Titans field therefore, it makes the list)

AT&T Stadium (see above)

Bad venue names in other parts of the world: LINK

Bumthang Stadium (Bhutan)

Football is growing all the time in Bhutan but is lagging in the popularity
stakes behind archery. A few arrows to whoever dreamed up the Bumthang stadium name may just help though.

Hunky Dorys Park (Drogheda United - Ireland)

Cashpoint Arena (SC Rheindorf Altach - Austria) The Utah Jazz could have had their arena named Cashpoint. At least we would know why the calls went the way they did.

Bargain Booze Stadium (Witton Albion - England)

Middelfart Stadium (Denmark)

Wankdorf Stadion (BSC Young Boys - Switzerland)

NRG???? Wasn't that a club back in the day that had different bars (all in one in one club) with different themes??

SORRY!! That was back in the days of "X" or more specifically "ecstacy".....

ALLEGEDLY!!!

Been there, danced to that, got the 2 am kickout. 6400... Lizard Lounge...

But back to topic, I guess "perpetual house of sadness" has been cornered by the Browns

If you name the stadiums after the largest contributors to the builders of the stadiums, they would all be named Taxpayer Stadium. Just add the city to the front, Houston Taxpayer Stadium, Dallas Taxpayer Stadium, Washington Taxpayer Stadium, etc. When do we stop subsidizing the playpens of the wealthy?

Now we need to come up with words for the acronym.

Right now, judging how we played last year, I got:

Not Really Good

Taxpayers aren't contributors. They are financiers. They don't end up out any money on the deal. The real benefit to having city finance rather than bank finance is with the city's involvement (prior to a crappy S.Ct. decision in Kelo) they could exercise eminent domain.

Man, that rings a bell! Now that you mention it, my foggy memory of that era vaguely recalls being there at some point...details still tricking in.... :drunk:

Although, I was more about rock and roll, so Backstage, Hurricane Alley, Deep Phat, the Abyss, Millennium, and of course the last one standing, Fitzgeralds, were all regular haunts. There are most likely other names that I don't remember right now, but these come to mind.

I liked Rhino Room

All fine establishments (also Numbers, Ocean Club, Red Square, Sam’s, etc.) but we easily spent the most time at XCESS.

That's "Factory of Sadness" if you please.

I feel so sorry for those people.

Wow. So many choices in Houston back in those days. As far as R&R clubs in Austin we had Sneakers on N Lamar and that was about it!

Thank God it's not NGR!

Wait!! What???? No Cardis?? errr, there was a period of "Thunders", no? C'mon MAN!! :D I once, twice saw or multiple times have seen "Diamond Darryl" there!

RIP Mr. Abbott!!

Even when they were playing "covers" as a "glam band", Darrell was bringing it!!!

I don't remember the "Abyss" though I'm sure I have stared into it, a bunch!!!

If they retain Schaub as our QB it's going to be called

Sounds like Red Square. It was downtown and they had a dance floor for seemingly EVERYTHING. I used to LOVE Bayou Mama's. Women outnumbered guys and it was BEAUTIFUL! I hated Pete's Wild Life though. It was cool at first then became a freakin' coke den.

REO-La Field

Except that it isn't true. They designate Hotel taxes to pay off the bonds they finance making them contributors since those same revenue sources could be used in the general fund.

That hurts your argument even more. Hotel taxes are primarily paid by non-Harris County people.

NRG ... bet that took some thought in naming an "energy" company.

Like naming your pet hound deeogie ...

My cousin has a dog named Deogy. His other two dogs are Spot and Fido. True story. Say what you want, but every time a person comes over and meets the dogs they think it's the coolest set of names ever. So "on the nose" it's actually a tad clever.

Yeah it is funny. Had a friend who named his daughters cat Seaytie ... she was mad when she got old enough to spell.
