Reliant Park will soon be called NRG Park and Reliant Stadium NRG Stadium, after NRG Energy, the parent company of one of the largest electric retailers in the Houston area.

County sources say NRG, which acquired Reliant's retail operations in 2009, is planning a rebranding effort that will involve swapping out every sign bearing the Reliant name.

A related item is expected to appear on the next meeting agenda of the board of the Harris County Sports and Convention Corp., the agency that runs the county-owned park.

Reliant bought the naming rights for the Houston Texans' stadium and surrounding buildings in 2002 for $300 million, the most lucrative deal of its kind at the time.

The 32-year agreement required Reliant to pay about $10 million a year, with 75 percent going to the NFL team, 15 percent to the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo and 10 percent to Harris County.

NRG Stadium sounds kinda bland IMO

Glad to hear about the change. The Texans didn't play well at Reliant last year. :shades:

I guess it's one of those cuts both ways kind of things. If your corporate BS stadium name sucks then at least you know that sooner or later that company will get bought or change its name, or go under and you'll get another shot at it. On the other hand I always thought Reliant Stadium wasn't too bad as these naming-rights stadium names go. At least it wasn't "Gallery Furniture Field at Save You Money Stadium". I'm sorry to see it go.

NRG Stadium does indeed sound like a good name for the Chargers home field. It doesn't really say Texans too much to me. Neither did Reliant Stadium but at least I was used to that. So does Reliant Park become NRG Park now? Are they going to save or tear down the NRG Astrodome?

Bleh , I don't care .... I don't go to the stadium because of the stadium or its name. I kinda find all this corporate crap in sports annoying and adding cost to the consumers bottom line in an already overpriced market.

At least it isn't Pro Players Stadium which isn't a bad name until you realize it's all about the underwear.

Other names that suck beyond just being a corporate name:

Monster Park (not horrible, but a bit cheesy for my taste. Kudos to the powers that be for letting the Stick to go out with it's original name)

Izod Center (Nets, Devils former home)

Minute Maid Park (oh well, better than Enron as it turns out :rake:)

Land Shark Stadium (formerly Joe Robbie, Pro Players)

LP Field (ok, but it's the Titans field therefore, it makes the list)

    AT&T Stadium (see above)

Bad venue names in other parts of the world: LINK

    Bumthang Stadium (Bhutan)

Football is growing all the time in Bhutan but is lagging in the popularity
stakes behind archery. A few arrows to whoever dreamed up the Bumthang stadium name may just help though.

Hunky Dorys Park (Drogheda United - Ireland)

Cashpoint Arena (SC Rheindorf Altach - Austria) The Utah Jazz could have had their arena named Cashpoint. At least we would know why the calls went the way they did.

Bargain Booze Stadium (Witton Albion - England)

    Middelfart Stadium (Denmark)

Wankdorf Stadion (BSC Young Boys - Switzerland)

NRG???? Wasn't that a club back in the day that had different bars (all in one in one club) with different themes??

SORRY!! That was back in the days of "X" or more specifically "ecstacy".....

    ALLEGEDLY!!!
