-Looking Forward- Texans vs Raiders 11/17/13

b0ng

Bad Hombre
So the Texans next match-up is with the Oakland Raiders. Some stats:

Offense (PPG)
Texans 18.9 (27th)
Oakland 18.4 (29th)

Offense (YPG)
Texans 376.2 (9th)
Oakland 330.8 (18th)

Defense (PPG)
Texans 27.6 (28th)
Oakland 24.8 (21st)

Defense (YPG)
Texans 280 (1st)
Oakland 345.4 (16th)

So the Texans do two things fairly well. They gain lots of yards on offense (But score low in points) and they are stingy with yards on defense. Points on defense, yeah, that number is skewed by offensive turnovers that have been for 6 (Of which we added one more to that total last night). That being said, you really cannot deny the defense is not playing as well as it has in the previous two seasons. JJ Watt is still a madman, but we're missing Cushing again, and the role players aren't really making as much impact on the game as is needed (Swearinger is starting to grow on me as is Keo, weird).

The Raiders however present a unique team. They are obviously over-performing expectations with Terrelle Pryor looking pretty good to start with, but you can say that he's hit a little bit of a slump in terms of passing. Running QB's though, they harry this defense this season, and I'm afraid that almost every game (even the raiders) is losable from here on out.

I think if the Raiders defense is as bad as their team stats project out, then Keenum could have a field day, and thus, might begin the inevitable 4 game winning streak to get us up to 6-7.

Someway and somehow, our special teams will find a way to lose this game. Whether it's giving up a 95-yard kick return for a Touchdown or Randy Bullock missing two or three field goals (wide left or blocked). The Raiders will take advantage of our costly mistakes on special teams.

There is no inevitable winning streak on the way. I believe whole heartedly the Texans will finish 2-14 and end the 2013 season with 14 losses in a row. It would nearly match the Astros' 15 losses in a row to end their 2013 season. The first overall pick in the draft and great young talent is nothing to sneeze at. I will certainly take it for enduring this miserable season.

There is no way in hell the Texans lose all the rest of their games this season. That just won't happen. No, they'll have some horrid mix of loses with a few surprise wins just enough to keep us from a top five draft choice.

But whatever. I'll be starting each game by rooting for them, but by the end I may be laughing at them. That's not an unusual reaction for Houston NFL teams.

A collapse like that would be of epic proportions and I firmly believe that Texans have a much better shot at ending up 4-12 - 6-10 territory. Either way though, your analysis on the game hinging entirely on special teams gaffes (Of which the Texans have had many) means that the D is going to let the Raiders score enough points for that to be a factor? That the offense will not put up enough points to force the raiders to score 14 - 17 points from those errors?

I hope I'm wrong but I don't think our offense will play as good as they have been in recent games. Derek Newton is getting abused at right tackle. Our running game isn't producing anything positive. Ben Tate should just sit out the rest of the year, and join Arian Foster, with those broken ribs. He's obviously trying to increase his free agency dollars in a contract year.

I'm sure Andre Johnson will snag a couple TDs from Case Keenum as he continues to pad his TD totals. We'll score 14 points and miss another 6 or 9 on field goals. I think the Raiders will find a way to beat us 23-14 on Sunday.

I think we blew our load in the first half against the Colts on national TV by dominating and taking a 21-3 lead. There is too much game film of Case Keenum already (three starts is plenty). The Raiders defense just needs to have a good week to gameplan for our one-dimensional offense and they should play pretty well against us on Sunday.

We had a much better team last season, starting 11-1 and finishing 12-4, and still the Jaguars came into Houston and we barely pulled it out in overtime. I also watched the Jaguars win over the Titans on the NFL Network rewind. Just being honest here, they definitely have what it takes to beat us twice this year.

I'm telling you right now. The Texans can easily finish 2-14. We're going to get blown out by the Broncos, Patriots and Colts (on the road). I don't think we will beat the Titans on the road the final game of the season, especially if we need a loss to clinch the first overall pick.

Our defense has lost their heart and soul. Nobody except J.J. Watt is playing all that great. The Raiders will abuse our mediocre inside linebackers. All they have to do is dink and dunk their way down the field with the middle of the field wide open on easy passing routes. Darryl Sharpton and Joe Mays, I don't want either of them back next season. Kareem Jackson is back to being his old horrible self, aka the 2010 version. Johnathan Joseph has lost a step and can't cover the speedy wide receivers anymore.

The Raiders are about to do what the Rams did. Come into Reliant Stadium as the noticeably weaker team on paper, but they will play a physical game inside the trenches, force turnovers, dominate on special teams, run the ball hard on offense to gain critical first downs, and basically punch us in the mouth and come away with a hard-fought road win.

You think that much of the Raiders defense that this will happen? Tell me why you think think the Raiders defense will play as well as the Cardinals/Chiefs/Colts defenses against the Texans. They seem to have not been able to keep teams off of the boards really at all this season. So please expand on this.

Every game is a different story and matchup. You know as well as I do that how we played against the Cardinals, Colts and Chiefs is meaningless going into this game. The Raiders are coming into Reliant Stadium with a lot to prove. They are not the team that had Super Bowl expectations entering the season. They are not the team currently on a seven-game losing streak. All of the pressure will be on the Texans in this game. We are favored to win this game.

I just have a gut feeling the Raiders will beat the Texans on Sunday. I'm going to just leave it at that. I just don't want you guys to fell disappointed after we lose our 8th game in a row. You shouldn't pump this lifeless team up all week just to get you heart broken on Sunday. There's a reason why we keep finding ways to lose games.

So now AJ is padding his stats. I have seen it all.
I meant that in a good way but may have worded it wrong. Increasing his career TD totals late in his career so that he can become a first ballot Hall of Famer. I would love to see that happen. His numbers are already Hall of Fame worthy. Everything except his lack of Touchdowns. But 5 TDs in two games is a nice boost. I'm hoping he can play three or four more seasons and still produce at a high level. Maybe he can become a lot like Chris Carter. All he does is catch Touchdowns late in his career.

This is all gut feelings and ambiguous stuff. So leaving it at that is fine enough with me. I'm hoping for analysis in this thread.

The Raiders are the team that Nick Foles tied the record for TD's in a game against. And Terelle Pryor has tied a Raiders franchise all time low in QB rating with 42.0 over the last 4 game span. Few more stats to think about.

And I admire that but if these games were won and lost based on stats the Texans would be sitting pretty with a 7-2 record right now and not a 2-7 record. We still have the number one ranked defense the last time I checked (yardage wise). It doesn't mean we can stop a team from scoring points when the game is on the line. Terrelle Pryor will likely eat us alive even with a banged up knee.

I don't need any analysis to tell me that the Texans can't stop a big passing play right now. We can't even stop the intermediate routes over the middle of the field. When you see those big gaping holes because we have crappy inside linebackers, you don't need stats to tell you there's a problem there. Without Brian Cushing, and go ahead and look up the stats last season also without him, our defense is not the same.

According to the ESPN power rankings, the Texans are the best darn 2-7 and the Raiders are the worst 3-6 teams in the league.

This will be an epic battle.

We gonna lose we will lose to da RAIDERSSS DENVER and PATS will smoke us we will go 1-1 with the jags and lose to INDY and TENN on the road

Ed Reed is picked-up by Oakland and starts his first game with the Raiders against the Texans. His first play is a Pick-6, but it is called back because he was illegally using his walker.

Do we still suck against mobile QBs?

In all the rest of the suck I've lost track.

If so, oh oh.

This is what I'm thinking. If we play man most of the game, we stand to get shredded by Prior. Houston should match up favorably against Oakland's pass rush, which gives a good chance for Case to have a great game.

I don't want to see the game end with Prior winning it with his feet.

I am being incredibly lazy here and not reading anything, but the first several posts and the last couple posts, but here is my take...

The Raiders, whether they want to admit it or not yet are also in the middle of a lost season (not statistically I know, but realistically). They aren't making the playoffs.

With the said, if Pryor is their future, Dennis Allen is the worst coach ever if he rushes him back from a sprained MCL. With that said, I doubt he plays, or even if he does, he doesn't make it the whole game. That leaves Matt McGloin... I don't know how he is on an NFL roster, but if he plays we will DOMINATE.

Raiders D sucks.

The Texans D is a VERY deceptive stat. We are obviously not #1. It doesn't factor in all of the roughing the passer penalties or (what seems like) the 2 50+ yard Pass Interference plays we give up EVERY SINGLE GAME.

Regardless, my stance is Texans 30 Raiders 23

Looking Back...

There is a long standing Texans tradition that says Texans players must crap the bed when facing their former team. This was begun in 2002 when Jay Foreman melted down while the Texans faced the Buffalo Bills in week 6 following the Texans Bye week.

The team was 1-3 at the time but with the 2-3 Bills coming to town Texans players and fans were thinking this was our best chance for our second win. I was not to be. Instead Jay got into a little foul trouble and kept the drive alive that proved to be the margin of victory.

Free agents signed by the Texans have been doing it ever since. Shane Lechler will have the worst game of his career following his illness and seal the defeat "somehow".

Former Raider Todd Christensen passed away on Wednesday. That means the Raiders will beat us yet again.

Former Raider Todd Christensen passed away on Wednesday. That means the Raiders will beat us yet again.

Indeed! That just adds to the probability that we'll lose this one. When an owner dies, a former beloved player for the other team passes away, or some "event" takes place that focuses a team that might otherwise not have a good chance of winning and turns them into a razor-sharp, steely eyed group of men seeking retribution you can always bet that the next team on their schedule will be the Houston Texans.

I'm to lazy to look it up, but I believe the Texans have a very bad record against first time starters. So, I'm hoping McGloin doesn't see the field. Just saying

Sent from the toilet...

As long as special teams play doesn't factor into the equation then the Texans will have a chance to win. But for some reason it's hard not to think about Randy Bullock missing a critical field or two, or three, or four...

I just have that bad feeling in my stomach that Sebastian Janikowski is going to make a few 50-plus yard field goals and that will be the difference in a 26-17 Raiders win. All because Randy Bullock couldn't make his field goals. I'll go ahead and guess that Bullock will miss three field goals to match his total in his last home game. Someway and somehow the Texans will find a way to lose another winnable game. This one will sting a little more because it's against a bad team and not a playoff caliber team like the Cardinals, Colts and Chiefs.

Everybody is talking about the Raiders defense being so bad but I think they'll have a lot to prove in this game. Terrelle Pryor, even with one good knee, can probably take advantage of our mediocre inside linebackers. The middle of the field will be wide open and I mean WIDE OPEN. The Raiders offense can eat us alive just by passing or running right up the gut. I wouldn't be shocked if Rashad Jennings has the best game of his career on Sunday. He's had a couple of good games in a row against the Giants and Eagles. So he has a bit of momentum coming in, while our run game is pretty much non existent.

"Yet again"?

We're 5-2 against the Raiders all time.

And one of the two the Raiders only fielded two players - Lechler & Janikowski.

Janikowski tied the 3 FGs of 50+ yds in one game which he already held in a tie with Rackers (who kicked a 54 yarder in the game) and Kris Brown.

And we're 0-1 against them when they have a death in the organization. Hence the "yet again".

I don't think the death of a former player from the 70s will have the same impact as a long time owner who changed the game of football as we know it. Just saying.

Half the current players probably didn't know this guys name. Al Davis drafted the team. He was a real, albeit freaky, person to them.

I honestly don't know what to think about this "team"

At first I thought they were just "dealing" with having that target on their back... you know when the good teams come to town, you prepare for them all week long, not wanting to be embarrassed. So I was thinking SanDiego & Tennessee really brought it, because we were supposed to be that team.

Then I thought, "Maybe the team is laying down on Schaub." But after he was replaced with Keenum the defense continued to give up 80+ yard TD scoring drives.

So I thought they were laying down on Kubiak... then he had a stroke. Surely their play would pick up.

The only thing I got left is that it's an inside job. However, after listening to Wade give press conferences all week & fill in on the Gary Kubiak show, I'm hoping Wade realizes he doesn't want to be a head coach after all & he gets back to putting his guys in the right position to make plays & they start playing as a unit again.

There is too much game film of Case Keenum already (three starts is plenty).

This indicates that you believe Case won't continue to get better. That he is incapable of adjusting to the NFL.

There's game film on every starting QB in the league. Defenses always study that film before a game. DCs always try to figure them out & plan accordingly.

It's up to Case (who also studies that film) to beat those defenses anyway.

The Raiders are coming into Reliant Stadium with a lot to prove.

They are not the team that had Super Bowl expectations entering the season. They are not the team currently on a seven-game losing streak. All of the pressure will be on the Texans in this game. We are favored to win this game.

Sounds like two contradicting thoughts.

we will lose every game left in the season except for the colts

so that way we won't even be able to enjoy the first win in indy

I believe Case Keenum is very capable of improving and eventually being able to beat the blitz once we improve the offensive line and running back position. But these last four games he started have been very predictable to watch in the second half. That's all I meant about the game film. I knew the Raiders were going to win this game. Ben Tate and his broken ribs, and all of our undrafted rookie RBs, are not good at picking up the blitz like Arian Foster was.

Gary Kubiak already went back to Matt Schaub, probably lost faith in Case Keenum like I have as well, and this season is a train wreck at 2-8. We have six games left and I don't think things will improve until the off-season.

If we bring in a new head coach he's not likely to make Case Keenum his starting quarterback going into 2014. It will be a total roster overhaul. We may even have to think about drafting a quarterback in round one like Teddy Bridgewater, Marcus Mariota (if he declares) or Johnny Manziel.

But our defense is so horrible we could use an elite defensive player to pair with J.J. Watt like Jadeveon Clowney, Anthony Barr or C.J. Mosley. Also Jake Matthews would solidify our offensive line for the next twelve years. We may be better off trading down even if we do end up with the first overall pick. We will definitely be in the top five regardless.

Ironically though, I was wrong about the special teams losing this game. Randy Bullock made his field goals and it was Keshawn Martin, not Jacoby Ford, who made the big TD in the return game (punt return).

If not for our special teams actually playing well today, we would have been blown out by two or three scores and not lost 28-23. But I'm sure our special teams will lose next Sunday's game against the Jaguars. It's just a ticking bomb waiting to explode. This entire team is cursed this season.

Our 2013 season can be summed up by one song...

http://youtu.be/2H5uWRjFsGc

We will be back kicking ass and taking names in 2014: 15-1 record!

The Raiders' defense is actually pretty good in spite of the stats, many of which were skewed by the blow-out loss to the Eagles.

Someway and somehow, our special teams will find a way to lose this game.

The Texans ST actually provided some of the best plays for the Texans.

Jason Tarver has the Raiders' defense playing exceptionally well; except for the blow-out loss to the Eagles. You'll also notice that until yesterday's game against the Chiefs, the Raiders' D held the Broncos to their lowest point total of the year.

Raiders D sucks.

The Texans D is a VERY deceptive stat. We are obviously not #1.

Likewise, the Raiders' D stats are very deceptive, which is why you probably think they suck. In truth, Raider fans are delighted with the Raiders' D this year under Jason Tarver, and they keep getting better as the year goes on.

Awwww Poor Cerberus didn't like this comment and negatice repp'd me. Poor baby. Someone didn't agree with him on the internet.

wambulance_logo.jpg

What is even sadder, is you crying about rep. On some boards you would be admonished and chastised for being a crybaby, and others would neg rep you for crying.

Your neg rep was well earned with your character attack on someone who is dead. Didn't your parents teach you manners and tell you not to speak ill of the dead? Common decency. You lack it, you got neg rep. It's quite simple.

Let me tell you something right now, don't you ever speak of my parents!

Al Davis was an assclown and you sir are a donkey, just like I said in the comment I left you. You have your opinion of Al Davis and I have mine. I give a rats ass if he's dead or alive. Same goes for Bud Adams. Feel free to negative rep and everyone else that feels ill towards him. Booo yourself jerk.

I'll speak of your parents if and when I please, and you sister, brother, uncle, aunt, grandparents, etc. But I'll tell you what, I won't mention them again if you agree to never mention me, speak to me, speak of me, write anything about me, post anything about me, and of course you can never post anything about Al Davis ever again either. Deal? Yeah, I didn't think so.

Luckily for me I don't get all butt-hurt about neg rep on a message board, or over some unknown fool calling me names; I'm not that insecure and it allows me to be the bigger man and ignore your taunts.

My advice to you is to take a valium or something, because you certainly need to chill out and relax. This is the frickin' internet, look out the window and you'll see the real world. So don't get so wound up over things you see here.

Dude! Get over it already. Jeez. Neg rep isn't the end of the world, and whining about receiving neg rep isn't going to make things all better. Just man-up, take your lumps, and move on.
