Austin Texans fans: Let's discourage some unruly Cowboys fans

Apples and roadmaps
As you read my proposal below, please keep in mind: Confrontation is definitely not part of this suggestion.

This is a request for Texans fans in Austin to help prevent some uncivil Cowboys douche bags from being rewarded for acting like uncivil Cowboys douche bags.

The Common Interest on Burnett near 183 has done quite well in accommodating Texans fans for several years now. The owner, Mack, is a decent guy who supports all Texas teams, including the Cowboys, but he switched the big screen to the Texans games four years ago when the fan base grew. And since this bar shows every game in the NFL on 20 screens, the varying fan bases have always interacted pleasantly.

This year, some new regulars include a couple of Cowboys fans who obviously don't like the fact that the Houston game is on the big screen, so they are testing the boundary between harmless trash talk and blatant provocation. As an example, any time the Texans lose the ball or get scored on, they'll cheer and yell "CHOKE CITY!" at those of us trying to enjoy the game. The most obnoxious of the group will walk over to the Green Bay fan base, and -- very loudly -- cheer for the opposing team. This is not the kind of atmosphere that has ever existed in this bar. There has never been tension. Now, we have people unable to enjoy their games. The problem is not that a Cowboys fan expresses his opinion -- it's that he's trying to create tension in this formerly comfortable setting, which will intimidate people into going to other bars.

It's possible that I can inform the staff that someone is making everyone feel uncomfortable, but that's weak. The real solution is for more Texans fans to show up and make more noise than the small group of attention-seekers. But I do want to stress: Confrontation is to be avoided. I don't want a situation where trashy Cowboys fans pull anyone into the mud. The idea here is to discourage them through a growing Texans presence. I should also mention that there is a new group of Colts fans that have made their presence known, and they may need to be reminded what state they're in. And more Texans fans rewards the bar owner for giving our fan base a chance.

If Cowboys fans eventually outnumber Texans at this bar, then fine, the bar owner will make the best decision for his business. That's fair. But the last thing we want to see is a bar's atmosphere change because a small minority isn't discouraged from trash talking everyone else.

That's a shame. That was a cool place to hang out and watch games on Sunday. Aren't most Texans fans in Austin doing the Lavaca St bar on Sundays now?

Yes, and the the crowd is huge, so if the Common Interest becomes a problem, that is where you need to be, it truly is a great place and there are 100's of fans there, they have Team sponsored giveaways and its not that far from where you are. Heck now that Austin is so large you cant get anywhere in less than 45 mins to an hour it seems. S I know one person who drives from Bastrop every game, and I live in Dripping Springs and still go down.

I had my first experience watching the game at Lavaca St and it was an awesome time. The waitresses did a really good job of coming by and seeing if you needed anything, the food was good, it was 90% Texan fans, the weather was great. I live in San Antonio but visit Austin quite a bit and will definitely be back to watch a game.

CI's a great place for the NFL Sunday Ticket, and I have a longtime relationship with the staff. There used to be a lot more Texans fans there, which was around the time I met you and Ryan and Lindsay. I think the turnout has dwindled because the Texans get consistent TV coverage now.

I love Lavaca St Bar, and I go there periodically, but I've grown accustom to the regulars and staff at CI. It's a tradition at this point.

BTW, let me know if you're going to any games at Reliant this year. We can meet up at a tailgate.

It's a possibility however not sure when I can come back. I will be hitting the game in Jacksonville. I had a funny call from the Jags yesterday. They told me that if I bought a group of tickets like 10 for example they would throw in a couple of free tickets and some field passes. Anyone up for a Jacksonville road trip? ;)

If you brought more than 20 people would that count as a Texan home game in Jax?
:kitten:

I tried doing the CI thing a few years back too, and it just never became what I hoped it would.
I've gotten the owner at Lavaca Street Bar to host us now and it is nothing short of Awesome.
Free jello shots from the bar on TD's, they also give away a $25.00 gift card each week.
The restaurant part has started doing $25.00 gift cards as well, along with the stuff the Texans send us.
We do free raffle tickets for all Texans fans and hold the drawing at halftime.
If you truly want the Texans fan experience, there is no other place in town that compares. We have tons of big TVs and the sound for EVERY Texans game.
And like Big Wig said, I drive in from Bastrop area each week, so nobody has an excuse. LOL

Update: The Austin based Seahawks fans have claimed CI, and the place is now packed every Sunday with around 70 very loud people from Seattle. They bring in a ton of business, so I'm quite happy for the CI owner and staff. But that means the Texans take a lower priority. Just an FYI for anyone in north Austin.
