AJ Injured

Looking at the ice pack on AJ's leg, it was positioned beneath the right knee, making me think that this is NOT a knee injury. It is more likely a bone bruise of the tibia (shin bone).

However, if this is the case, the most common associated injury with a tibial bone bruise is an ACL tear. I am sure that AJ will undergo an MRI tomorrow to rule in these potential injuries or rule them out.

It did seem that he was rubbing the upper outer portion of the shin bone, could be sir. Guess we'll see. I'm pretty disappointed that Kubes didn't pull him out of the game whe he was noticably hobbling around the field. This ain't the playoffs, live to fight another day AJ.

Is this good or bad? Or is it bad any way you look at it?
As long as it's not a PCL injury which he suffered in 2007 and missed quite a few games we should be alright. Didn't look anything at all, at least as bad, as the one I remember against the Panthers back in 2007 so I'm hoping for the best. Seemed like the Ravens player just fell on top of it as he was on the ground.

Thanks for trying to put us at ease!

It'll be great to hear the MRI result come back a negative tomorrow.

How does this put ease into anybody????

AJ took a knee to his shin on a short pass. I don't remember the quarter, but they showed it on replay and it looks like it should be a bruise.

Could players having to wear knee pads this year lessened the chance of a more severe injury?

NFL knee pads basically cover the knee cap (and only a couple inches above and below) and help to buffer direct trauma to the knee cap and theoretically lessening the incidence and severity of bone bruises of the knee cap itself and limiting impact injuries to structures behind it, including knee joint structures. They offer no protection to most of the shin areas.

Soccer players have for years understood the debility that bone bruises of the shin can produce, and accordingly have worn shin pads specifically to minimize this injury.

Shin shmin! Way down the list of types of injury concern.

May be way down the list for sure. But for AJ, who may have specifically sustained it in a weight-bearing bone (the tibia/shin bone), this could mean that he misses anywhere from 1-3 games and sees the effects in his play beyond that. A bone bruise is essentially damage to the marrow of the bone. Think of it as similar to osteoporosis. If it is significant and not given time to heal, and it is exposed to continued weight-bearing and trauma, just like osteoporosis, the bone may fracture. Many patients with significant (depends on severity as determined on MRI) bone bruise in a weight-bearing bone are not allowed or severely restricted in weight-bearing for several weeks (many could not do so anyway because of the severe pain involved). If not adequately protected during the early period of healing, bone bruises may represent regions of bone at risk for the subsequent development of further problems such as fractures. If MRI comes back with severe bone bruise, expect not to see AJ on the field or see his play be significantly affected for at least 4 weeks.

the funny thing about knee pads and the like is half of the skill position players don't wear any of them.

That's not true anymore. In the past, knee and thigh pads were mandatory from 1979 to 1994 before becoming an optional item in 1995. But the NFL adopted a rule change for this season, mandating that all players except kickers and punters wear knee and thigh pads in games. Players are given over 30 options of thigh pads, including compression shorts with the pads in them or regular pads inserted into the uniform pants.

Here's how the enforcement of the rule works:

During warmups, NFL uniform inspectors will check to see if players are wearing the pads and inform a designated team person to relay the violation to the player. During a game, uniform inspectors will inform the team, who tells the back judge during a stoppage in play, informing the referee, who tells the head coach the player is ineligible to play until the pad violation is corrected.

I'm pretty sure I suffered a bone bruise in a biking accident and it hurt like the dickens! Took forever to heal too, not to be taking lightly for sure.

A guy on my hockey team tuck a puck to the leg and got a bone bruise. He was not allowed to play or practice for about 4 weeks, and even after that he was still sporting a nice bruise and was moving around pretty gingerly. From my observation, bone bruises are no fun.

All true but if look at AJ his "knee" pads are actually lower Quad pads because his knees are completely exposed.

I really liked how we kept him in the game when he was obviously limping. Did Kubiak learn that from Shanahan, too? You have 3 good receivers in Hopkins, Posey, and even K-mart. Nah, let's just keep AJ in and risk him getting seriously hurt. Hurrr.

It is obvious that it is easy for the pants, with the knee pads within, to ride up. The enforcement may indeed be "selective," especially for vets.

Obviously you've never suffered a substantial injury to the shin area. When my rodeo "career" ended, I was wearing shin pads. All I had to do was run to the gates after a ride. An NFL player has to run is ass off for 60-70 snaps.

I play a little indoor soccer getting dinged in the shin without pads hirts like hell and takes forever to get better, forever...

With the way AJ was pulled from the game grossly limping the way he was, there is no way I can accept the fact that he did not incur a significant bone bruise. Kubiak, as country as he sounds, is sophisticated enough that he knows that using the term "xrays" does not include MRI findings. And in using that terminology, he cannot be accused of giving false info. Deceitful maybe, but not false. It seems like everything is a game when it comes to injuries.

I wish Kubiak could play the game plan game as well as he plays the injury report game. Maybe he could fool a few fans more than a handful of times a year.
