Whoa.

Statistically they were worse than Richard Smith/Frank Bush land. Which is a land that is a barren wasteland best removed from your brain with bleach and alcohol.
 
Am interested in seeing if Marques Colston will still be their #1 and can still bring it, or if injuries and age will diminish his role this year.

It was rough last year. The interview was right about the big question mark on D with the LBers. Not sure how it's going to shake out. Secondary has some talent, but it really was wasted in the scheme last year and we'll found out if it was scheme or personnel. The defensive front is the most encouraging part of the D. Young and talented, with attitude and ferocity. Jordan might be our best player on the defense and looks to fit better in the 3-4. Akiem Hicks is raw, but super talented. Rookies Jenkins and Foster have lit it up with their opportunities.

Defense will be improved. Enough to go far? We'll see.

He had the second highest reception yardage in his career last year. I don't think age will be the factor that possible injuries are. He's so dependable and selfless and works so hard, so effort and heart aren't questioned. He's been held out some this preseason with a foot injury, so we'll see if there's something more to watch for and he's listed as "Doubtful" for the game this weekend.

There's been a lot of worry, that's been somewhat assuaged by the surprising play of red-shirt 2nd year WR Nick Toon and rookie Kenny Stills.

Agree with the above text as well. We simply had nothing but issues against multiple receiver sets last year. Whether it was the Packers, Patriots or even the freaking Jaguars. Will nice to see what adjustments Wade has done and how Cushing's presence helps with things over the middle. Unfortunately, no Reed whose experience I think will help in this issue but need to see what these young safeties can do anyway.
 
The biggest problems the Texans have with teams like the Saints
(Patriots or Packers) isn't the defense.

While it's true the defense has given up a ton of points to these
teams, it's not completely on them.

When you play high scoring teams, you have to put up points
to match. Your offense has to step it up to keep you in the game,
and let your defense get a breather.

If you can keep yourself in the game, the defense has a chance
to make a play (at some point) that can turn the tide.

That can never happen if your team goes 3-and-out 5 times in
a row in the first half and your down by 3 scores. (as an example)

That's basically it. Your offense has to control the tempo and put up TDs. Not FGs. And you can't give QBs like Brees short fields. A Texans offense playing well is perfect to go against a team like the Saints. A Texans offense struggling? Not so much.

To be fair, Smith/Bush had more talent to work with than the Saints had. How many defenders do the Saints have that could start for the Texans? 2 or 3? Not saying they were coached well, but even Wade would have had difficulties putting a decent defense on the field in New Orleans.
 
Didn't Sean Payton hire Spagnuolo as the DC last year and then fire him in the offseason? One of the guys on 1560AM was saying that Spagnuolo never actually DC'ed a game under the guy who hired him.

Correct.

And from what has been passed around from within (obligatory grain of salt), he had no intention of firing him and giving him another opportunity since last year should or could not be held against him.

When Payton showed up at the first meetings, the support from defensive personnel was low and they were not pleased with Spags, his coaching, his style, his scheme, etc. Then during the actual meeting, Spags lost his mind and started attacking the other defensive coaches, people Payton had known for a long time. Spags began throwing one person or coach or player under the bus without taking much (if any) responsibility of his own. And I watched all the games and some (if not much) of the criticism was legitimate.

All in all, it was a toxic situation and Payton didnt feel that Spags was going to be a good fit moving forward and was irate at his attitude and response and let him go. Even though that is not initially what he planned on doing.
 
My two largest concerns:

1) O-line gets blown-up and we avg 3 or less yards per carry
with Schaub attempting to run for his life on every third and long

2) Defensive secondary continues to be non-existent and even
the backup NO QB throws for a gillion yards out of a spread set.

I was going to ask what you call bleach and alcohol but "barren wasteland" is a great name for it.

Make mine a double so I can forget the specials teams really sucked then too.

As great as our defense is, it can't carry the team against teams that can score. Miami, Minnesota, Baltimore...... sure. But teams like Denver (now with Peyton), the Bradies, the Packers.... if we don't score early & often (ala Denver) our defense can't carry us.

Our offense has to get us a lead on those teams, they can "run the ball" enough to keep us off balance.

The offensively challenged teams, we can get them off the field on third down.
