"Broncos forced to cut Elvis Dumervil after contract gaffe"

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. – With half an hour to spare before deadline, Elvis Dumervil had agreed to take a pay cut and remain with the Denver Broncos. But the Broncos did not receive Dumervil's signed contract via fax until six minutes after the 4 p.m. Eastern deadline had passed, a person with knowledge of the situation told USA TODAY Sports.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the team has not announced the move.

The Broncos instead filed the paperwork to release the Pro Bowl defensive end because Dumervil's $12 million would have been guaranteed if he was on the roster after the deadline.

The contract gaffe was a major blunder after a week's worth of negotiations after the Broncos asked Dumervil to reduce his $12 million salary or risk being released. In the end, both outcomes happened.

I suspect that agent is going to be looking for a new client soon.

But can't the Broncos just resign him?

I don't know if they can talk to the league office and request for an exception.
If that works then no harm done; if not, they would have to eat that $4.something cap hit.

Now if they resign him at $8M, they still have to take the extra cap hit (the $4.something MM that they were supposed to be saving.)

Just for reference, Dumerville's original caphit was going to be $13,623,000.

If he had taken the pay cut, his caphit would have been $9,623,000.

After being cut, his caphit is now $4,869,000 in 2013 dead money.

Difference is 4.754m between the two.

Gotcha!

The plot thickens...

@adbrandt
Something strange about this going to last hour. Team in Denver, agent in Philly, player in Miami. Lots of moving parts.

Well, one thing about this story, you can tell who has a job and who doesn't by the reaction to the fax machine bit in the comment section of any sports blog.

I'm not sure who clowned who in this, but I'm thinking Doom and his agent tried to pull a fast one on Elway.

Agree, believe this was their way of protesting the paycut Dumervil was asked to give.

I don't mind, hurts Broncos both in terms of losing a talented pass rusher, as well as their cap situation.

This is rich!

Broncos didn't get him signed, also now have about $5 million in dead cap space at the same time as a result.

He'll get around $8 million somewhere and hose the Broncos at the same time.

Take that, you Broncos Cultists!

The question here is a pay cut from $12 to $8 seems rather extreme?

Were the Broncos squeezing Dumervil too hard?

Dumervil fired his agent Marty Magid and has already hired a new agent (Tom Condon). Usually a player has to wait five days to hire a new agent, however Magid has agreed to waive a five-day waiting period so Dumervil could hire another agent today.

It was either take the pay cut or get cut. Dumervil waited them out.

I promise you, the organization wouldn't have tripped over technical issues had it been Von Miller.

I was laughing to some extent over all the comments about fax machines and the proces being so outdated. Im not sure how many faxes are sent/recd out of each of my eight offices everyday but its a lot.

I don't think you read all the news, Playoffs.

There was NO ultimatum.

Think like this; if there was an Ultimatum, it would have been real easy.
All the Broncos needed to do was to set an early deadline; two or three days in advance.

There was room for negotiation, thus the back-and-forth of swapping revisions.
The Broncos final offer was to guarantee $3.5M for injury and injury only in 2014.
It was sent to Dumervil's agent only a few hours before the NFL deadline (to have all the paperwork in their office, and not the Broncos office.)

The Broncos botched that one.

Like I said, I would have set an earlier deadline to pull the plug on negotiation; not half a day before, not a few hours before, and especially not an hour before.

I thought I read that it was sent to Dumervil's agent 30 minutes before the deadline. There's enough blame to go around on this one, I think. The Broncos shouldn't have sent it that late and even so, Dumervil's agent should have been waiting by the fax with Elway on the phone going "WHERE IS IT WHERE IS IT!!!???"

That's way too late!
I had mentioned before that if it was me, I would have set the deadline for Dumervil's agent to send in the agreement a day in advance, at least.

Well then he would have been cut, because they didn't come to an agreement until the day of this fiasco. You can't force a contract on a player, so I don't really see how they could have made this happen. Dumerville and his agent knew the deadline was the time the 12m guarantee kicked in.

It really doesn't matter in the longrun though, they could easily come to terms on a deal that would pay Elvis 8m this year, and have the exact same caphits as they would have before the cut. Whether or not they are willing to do that is the real question.

March 6th was the first I heard off that the Broncos wanted Dumervil to take a pay cut per NFL Network's Albert Breer.

It really doesn't matter when; in fact, Elway probably had everything ready before the start of free agency to get the initial proposal to Dumervil's agent.
And he probably did just that.

Can he set the deadline for the final answer a day ahead of the cut-off date by the league. I don't see why not.
But he didn't.

Right there is the fail.

Plus all the comp picks they'll get next year for all the free agents they lost this offseason. Dumervil's contract is even cheaper than the one Kruger got from Cleveland. I just laugh at the people that think the Ravens are going to stink now because of Flacco's contract and the free agents they lost. Ozzie Newsome is no dummy.

They'll probably have one average season and then go back to being contenders. The AFC North could be pretty weak this year though, so they could win it again.

Have you looked at the roster lately?

The Ravens defense actually got younger, which is what they were going to do anyway before the won the Super Bowl.

Agree but it'll take a year to get the younger players to gel. You can't get rid of that much front-line talent and not take a bit of a hit.

I completely agree with Ozzie Newsome and think the man is a genius...and everything I've ever wanted in a GM...

He made the tough decisions that most (especially my Titans) would never have the balls to make until it was too late.
