Shane Lechler wants to be a Texan

Vinny

shiny happy fan
Instead, the rumors of where Lechler will land have already begun with Adam Schefter reporting that Lechler is interested in joining the Houston Texans. Not a bad choice for Lechler, who has been one of the best punters in league history since being drafted by the Raiders in the fifth round of the 2000 NFL Draft. The Texans would allow Lechler an opportunity to win a Super Bowl before he retires.

doubt he really wants to go from a $4M/year punter to minimum.

with the current cap situation, there is no reason for the texans to spend more than the minimum on a punter.

would love to have him, but as has been said - there's no way we're going to pay a punter much more than minimum.

Lechler's Agent: Psst. Shane. You are a free agent and we need to get you the money.
Lechler: Yeah but the Raiders don't wanna pay for me.

Lechler's Agent: Just sent it out that you want to go to Houston. Let's see what anyone does now.

Bingo.

It's Orlando Pace all over again, except I think Bob McNair finally wised up to the trick after Leigh Bodden of the Patriots did the same thing to us that Orlando Pace did a few seasons prior.

It only took TWO TIMES for Bob to realize he was being used. LOL. Good for him, he's a genius ya' know!

Hey Shane, you wanna' play for us? Give us the leave minimum and you're hired. Otherwise, take your hostage negotiating tactics to Dallas or Washington.

What if behind closed doors we found that McNair was like that? LOL! I would be laughing through the next season.

If he's willing to sign for the same price that Donnie Jones would get, then go after him. Don't know many other punters who have punted the ball 80 yards.

I'm not saying break the bank or sign him for the minimum. Giving Lechler something decent & allowing him to come back home to Texas is a win/ win situation IMO. Lechler is a monster punter & let's be honest, w/ kubiak going conservative normally after he accumulates a 10pt lead & depending heavily on the defense to protect leads...field position is half the battle. Lechler could pin the opposition deep on a regular basis & give our defense a fighting chance when the HC gives up the fight w/ the offense. Sign him up IMO!

Just an FYI, according to Sporttrac, Lechler made 3.8m in salary last year, and had a 4.9m caphit. The Texans can't afford to offer anywhere close to that amount, but if he was willing to take 2 million a year, I would be all over that.

Donnie Jones made $890,000 last year, and had a cap hit of 605k. He is currently a free agent.

81 for 3826 47.2 avg 37 YOA this August= Shane Lechler
88 for 4150 47.2 avg 32 YOA this July= Donnie Jones

He may be interested due to the fact he was born and raised 50 miles from Houston and still has family living in his hometown. Could possibly take a paycut to come home and play for a winning team.

yep that's what I'm hoping goes down. He's also a HOF caliber punter. Not that punters ever get into the HOF...signed Ray Guy.

Why is Ray Guy in the HOF to begin with? Matt Turk has the same average as Ray Guy did. Pretty sure he's not getting into Canton.

Ray Guy is not in the HOF. I don't tend to dwell on stat lines to determine the quality of NFL players...but my eyes do tell me that Ray Guy was a game changer a difference maker. That is what the HOF is all about. Players who were difference makers at their positions

This^^^^^

It would be invaluable to know that no matter how far we are backed up 4th and long, we can still end up with favorable field position, courtesy of a single player. Looking back at past years, that in itself could be worth a brick of gold.

Their numbers were pretty similar, but Jones was rated #1 in 2012 by PFF while Lechler was rated #14 out of 40 total Ps.

Jones was a much better deal.

Donnie Jones was one of the top punters last season.

Lechler and Jones had the same gross punt average (yes i know Lechlers foot is stronger, but rarely do you need to kick it more than 50 yards without a touch-back). Jones had much better placement inside the 20.

Unless the dollars are equal, resign what you have.

If the price is right I am all for it. Dude is a hoot, met him a couple times in Port A, and one of the best ever.

I remember on more than one occasion Jones punting like crap in crucial/pressure situations/deep in our end of the field when we really needed a big punt. My memory may a bit fuzzy but for some reason that is sticking out to me. Stats may average out things, but give me Lechler any day for the right price.

If the Texans defense can get back to dominating again during the 2013 season, I'd love to have a punter who can pin them deep inside the 20 and 10.
