First Round: Kenny Vaccaro, SS, Texas 6010 215

A first in a 1st rd. safety, like Elam too but expect him going early 20's. Vaccaro looks natural for position & feel he transitions well to next level. Also gives Texans some flexablity to resign McCain or Quin maybe losing both?

Second Round: Tajh Boyd, Jr., QB, Clemson, 6010 225

In the mold of Russel Wilson. Has competitive fire, good feet in the pocket always looking down field as he avoids pressure. Strong, accurate arm. This is for all you Schaub haters who is 31 & I agree to the point we cannot rest easy without a more viable backup plan in place. You guys asked for it so here he is my top QB target for the Texans.

Third Round: DeAndre Hopkins, WR Clemson, 6010 200

If Texans land Boyd, look for them to move up to get his #1 targert Hopkins. I will try to appease my fellow draft cronies & subscribe to the kool aid, pray they can use Tate to improve position to address this all important receiver need. Could be just my impression but kid seems to have a little Julio Jones to him?

Third Round: Tank Carradine, DE/OLB, Florida State, 6040 265

Terrific value to shore up pass rushing. Tank was very productive his senior season until tearing his acl in his right knee. Can't have enough pass rushers especially if Barwin goes elsewhere via free agency. This Florida State team is loaded with NFL talent both lines.

Fourth Round: Daniel McCullers, NT, Tennessee, 6060 360

Sorry to once again dissapoint you guys with smaller one gap nose prospect but there can just be no substitute for size if you want your nose over the Center nose in the ) gap so he can control both A gaps not just one. I'm not worried about this whole penetration thing either, his job would be to tie up two blockers, compress the pocket, control the middle & take away passing lanes over the top. Raw, will need seasoning but what better situation than working with Wade Phillips.

Fifth Round: Reid Fragel, OT, Ohio State, 6080 300

Converted TE need I say anymore? Multiplicity is key word to describe this talent who could start by becoming that blocking TE Texans lack. As he develops he could also spell Newton plus there for depth purposes. Outside the box, upside fits system, not just some big lumbering body to stick out on the edge & struggle in pass pro.

Fifth Round: Cierre Wood, RB/Ret, Notre Dame, 6000 215

Has good frame to add weight, explosive with cut-back ability can also back-up Martin in kick return duties. Has good hands & willing blocker. I don't expect him or Riddick to have breakout performances against Alabama next Monday night so draft stock should still offer excellent mid round value. Since using Tate to trade up in 2nd rd. to add Clemson player(s) Cierre Wood or Theo would nice roster additions to bring into camp to complement Foster.

Sixth Round: Ivory Wade, C/OG, Baylor, 6030 305

Following in the footsteps of Blake & JD Walton Ivory switched to Center position & improved each week along with Bears who became a formidable opponent capable of beating anyone in the nation by seasons end. Most of his experience was starting @ RT but as a true freshman started LG. He is a perfect fit for ZBS. Combination of aggressive nature & physical ability most likely best fit would be to eventually replace another Wade, in Smith.

Seventh Round: Ryan Allen, P, Louisiana Tech, 6020 215

Pair him with Bullock & kicking game could be set for Texan franchise next ten + years. Next best punter will go probably fifth round because he can pull double duty as place kicker, Quinn Sharpe, Oklahoma State. Just can't see Texans going this route after taking Randy last year in the 5th rd. a 7th on a punter to compete with aging Jones I can see.

Seventh Round: Nigel Malone, CB, Kansas State, 5-10 180

Plays tomorrow against Oregon, so here is your heads up to check him out. Late round secondary prospect with no back-down against big receivers similar to Roc Carmichael who should move up the depth chart to replace McCain or Ball. Pretty deep CB class this year otherwise would be drafted much earlier than this.

Undrafted free agents:

ILB Michael Clay, Oregon
TE Ben Cotton, Nebraska
OLB Wes Horton, USC
OG Josh Dworaczyk, LSU
OT, Joe Caprioglio, Colorado State

I see us looking at offensive linemen earlier than the 5th round.

Depends who will be available. If Jonathan Cooper, North Carolina is still on the board late first I would scoop him up. Otherwise this mock was constructed with addressing the future starting QB for the Houston Texans plus supplying him his favorite target.

Still I found room to add a developmental LT who can start as a blocking TE. Also added a plus OG prospect who can play any position on the line. :)

JMO:

1. Vaccaro, I think we re-sign Quin.
2. Boyd, I don't know much about him, haven't paid alot of attention to QB since we just re-signed Schaub. I don't think we'll draft a QB in 2013.
3. Hopkins, he's listed as a bottom of the 1st round or top of the 2nd round prospect, what makes him fall to the 3rd round?
3. Carradine, makes sense only if we lose Barwin, but I think we re-sign him.
4. McCullers, to tall to play NT, won't be able to get his pads low enough for leverage.
5. Fragel, I don't know anything about him but I like the position chosen, I'd like to see O-ine addressed much earlier.
5. Wood, I don't know much about him but I like the position in this round.
6. Wade, see Wood comment.
7. Allen, love this pick, younger, better, and cheaper.
7. Malone, I don't know anything about him either but we need CB depth when we lose McCain to FA, I would like to see CB addressed a little earlier as well.

No FB as an UDFA? Tutogi, Boren, Copeland?

I did mention using Tate to improve draft slot position to grab WR Hopkins. What that will be come draft day is anyone guess, but yes he intrigues me the most of group.

I believe in Wade Phillips ability to mold a mountain if that means adding a one gap nose over center.

Here is a scouting breakdown from game the other night on Boyd -
#10 Tajh Boyd, QB, Clemson
-Variety of sets, often in pistol formation, some under center.
-Could have had better placement on handoff.
-Senses pressure, able to step up, scramble and gain a couple yards.
-Little flip to his motion, ball doesn’t take too long to get out.
-Reads the field short to long, accurate throw on dig route down the field.
-Shows some elusiveness in the backfield, needs to slide – takes a huge hit.
-Weak play action, under pressure, delivers a strike on out route.
-Makes a LB miss in the backfield, powerful run for a TD.
-Faces down pressure, steps into throw, good timing on stop route, perfect ball placement.
-Showing some serious toughness – taking some big hits.
-Lobs deep ball down the field, falls out of bounds.
-Climbs the pocket to avoid pressure, ridiculous backhand flip pass outside – very “Bad Favre”.
-Finds Hopkins in a tight window, good velocity, put it where only his guy could get it.
-Audibles being called in from the sideline.
-Takes a bad sack in the 2-minute drill – needed to get rid of the ball.
-Recovers own fumble, didn’t recognize weak-side blitz.
-Under siege by LSU, no time in the pocket.
-Perfect throw to Hopkins on slant, couldn’t place it better.
-Ball sailed a bit, mis-communication with receiver as well.
-Sticks in under pressure, floats great ball to TE to convert clutch 3rd down late in game.
-Hits second read and fires bullet to Hopkins for the TD.
-Rolls right, can’t find anyone open and misses on 2-point conversion.
-Overthrows Hopkins twice, both too high.
-Great touch on 4th down throw – clutch conversion.

Overall: Boyd showed more toughness than any QB I’ve seen this year. He got smacked in the chops in the passing game, but took a ton of hits on his 25+ runs as well. He showed that he can pass the ball and has enough elusiveness to buy time in the pocket. He is a 3rd round guy for me right now if he should declare.
Thanks for feedback

I like Boyd a bit , he's a tough guy , the bright lights and big stage dont send him into hiding.

Hopkins is probably my favorite WR in this draft but probably an end of the first , top of the second pick. Even with a mediocre combine I dont see him falling much. He plays like a veteran , just gets open and catches everything.

Looking at all the comparable talent from the back end of round one to the top of round three , I would consider trading out of the first all together in exchange for picks in the top third of rounds 2-3. With all the injuries and potential FA losses , they can use the extra picks.

Very good way of putting it, my sentiments exactly.

If Boyd comes out I doubt he's available in the 2nd round. I think he proved against LSU that he should at least be in consideration for top QB over Smith and Barkley. I like him more than both FWIW.

Both Hopkins & Boyd are underclassman yet to declare for the draft. Reason I targeted both was chemistry they share on the field & Texans need to improve QB & WR positions. This would justify first two picks in 2013 draft. If I'm reading your astute comments correct, Texans would take Boyd with first pick, then trade up in second to add Hopkins? Cost could be Tate or combination of picks. I would prefer some consolidation of picks, not compensatory because those are already locked in, but Texans still have all of their own picks to use for trading up.

I'm not a Schaub hater. He is a credit to this franchise, city of Houston & exemplary human being, but maybe it is time to seriously consider taking that next step? WR help is needed as well, but besides pure talent, production & skill set, intangibles are so important, one being chemistry hence I could see your points that combing Hopkins with Boyd does increase his draft value.

Thanks for Feedback, you guys rock

If we are looking for a QB/WR combo give me Bray/Patterson or Bray/Hunter.

BTW, I would love to see Hopkins in a Texans uni.

I'm a fan if McCullers.

The height thing is overrated. If you can keep your pads low, you can keep your pads low. Jacksonville had two big guys like that in the middle and they were beast. Haynesworth isnt short and when he was motivated he was a beast.

McCullers is a nice player.
