Doppelmock: In Season Version 1.0

Yes, I know its a bit early, but I have been fiddling with this mock for a couple of weeks and figured I would share it with my other Mock enthusiasts. For the purpose of this mock, I am giving the Texans a 3rd and 5th round supplemental pick(3rd for Mario and 5th for Jacoby/Brisel). As always, enjoy, and please leave feedback....

1. D.J. Fluker, OT, Alabama, 6’6 335lbs, 5.15
F715008.jpg

The RT position needs to be addressed. Butler is as good as gone after this year. Ryan Harris has played well but he has had some injuries in his past and may best suited as depth at this point in his career. Newton is a rookie and as a rookie has had peaks and valleys. That said, I am not yet convinced by Newton. He may be a better swing tackle than RT. There is no shame in that. Butler did a great job as swing tackle for a few years and was great in short spurts. Newton may be the same way. In my opinion, what this Offensive line needs is an injection of attitude. As Duff McKagen said, “Attitude, Some f*ck*n' attitude…” Right now, the Texans don’t have that nasty, mean, player who can plow through DL, and make holes to get that yard or two to keep drives going. They have to rely on play action, short passes, or trickery. Thus, I suggest D.J. Fluker. He has been a very good RT for Bama. He is a powerful run blocker (ask Trent Richardson and Mark Ingram how good he is) and great pass protector. He has the athleticism needed to play in a ZBS but is still big enough to push people around in a power system. He would be a dominant force in the Houston rushing attack for 10 years. He fits in with the larger nastier Oline, Kubes is trying to develop. I think with another offseason, Brooks is able to take over for Smith at LG. Jones will completely takes over for Caldwell at LG. The new oline would look like this: Brown---Brooks---Myers---Jones---Fluker. A nasty, strong, athletic line that can punch you in the mouth or use their athleticism to keep you on your toes.

2. Sharrif Floyd, DT, Florida, 6’3, 301lbs, 4.98

rn_u_sharriffloyd2_ms_600.jpg

For years this fanbase has craved an immovable tub of goo NT. The kind of guy who takes up space at engages 2 OL on every play. As we all know, Wade prefers the lighter more athletic NT(though I am aware of Jamal Brown in SD). Of course, the best of both worlds is to get a Richard Seymour type player, but they tend to go early to mid firsts(usually). So I will go with a high quality penetrating DT. He has been a terror for Florida since showing up. As a freshman he had 23 tackles and 6.5 tackles for loss. In 2010 as a Defensive end he managed 46 tackles with 6.5 tackles for a loss, 1.5 sacks, one blocked kick and one pass broken up. He is an excellent blend of power and speed and could slot at either DE or NT for the Texans. He gives the team versatility on the DL.

3. Travis Long, OLB, Washington State, 6’3, 256lbs, 4.79

wsu_1_t940.jpg

A nice sleeper (probably not for long) OLB prospect. Already has 3 multi-sack games this year. Has been a Pac 12 second teamer in the past. Tends to be around the ball and make plays. He is not flashy but he gives 110% on every play. He would fit right in with Wade’s Defensive philosophy.

3. (Mario Williams compensatory pick).
Kenny Stills, WR, Oklahoma, 6’1, 189, 4.53
rn_a_kennystills_ms_300.jpg

Its hard not to like him. He has played at Oklahoma since being a true freshman. He has decent size, solid speed, and good hands. I would take him here and add him to the group of Texans WRs. Key for him, as any young wr will be blocking. He showed some ability at Oklahoma. If he can improve he could become a key part of the Texans offense.

4. Chris Borland, ILB, Wisconsin, 5’11, 242lbs, 4.72

chris-borland.jpg

No, he’s not related to Al Borland, but he would be a great pick for the Texans. He is a tough physical Interior LB that is a run stuffer. Last year he had 143 tackles, 19 tackles for a loss, five forced fumbles, 2.5 sacks, two interceptions, and five passes broken up. He was basically out for 2010 and had a solid freshman year with 54 tackles and five forced fumbles. He isn’t the tallest ILB, he isn’t the fastest ILB, he isn’t’ the most athletic. If he were, he’d be a late first rounder. I’ll take talent like him in the 4th. He has the makings of a very good #2 ILB to stick next to Cush.

5. Trey Millard, FB, Oklahoma, 6’2, 249, 4.71
This guy reminds me of a Vonta Leach. I like Casey, but I would like to see him more as a TE than a FB. Millard is a short yardage monster(5.1 ypc), is a battering ram lead blocker, and can catch the ball. Millard combines the things we like about Leach (battering ram) with Casey (excellent hands and blocking). He would be a perfect weapon in the Kubiak system becuase he can do it all. I would consider going into the fourth for him if I had to. He would be that valuable to the Texans.

5(compensatory for Mike Brisiel and/or Jacoby Jones )
Spencer Long, OG, Nebraska, 6’4, 305 lbs, 5.25

spencer-long.jpg

What I like about him was that he was a walk on. Becoming a walkon at Nebraska as a OL is never easy. He worked hard, pushed himself, and made the team. He pushed himself even harder and got into the starting lineup. He even became an all Big Ten performer. That’s damn good for a guy who walked on the team and wasn't given a scholarship. This guy is a hard working, high effort guy. He would be excellent depth and would likely inspire/light a fire under the butts of some guys who have become too comfortable. Give him a year or two and who knows, he may be pushing someone out of the starting lineup...again.

6. Quinn Sharp, P/K, Oklahoma State, 6’1. 205lbs
Donnie Jones is a solid punter. He has actually been a bit better than I thought he would be. He has had some good and some ok punts. However, he doesn't really know how to angle punts, nor can he boom kickoffs. This team STRUGGLES with kickoff/punt coverage. One way to alleviate that is to have a kicker who can boom the kickoff out of the endzone and a punter who can directionally punt to the corners, reducing the opportunity for returns. Donnie Jones simply cannot do that. But I know someone who can: his name is Quinn Sharp. He had a 46.3 net punt average last year and led the nation with 61 touch backs. A 46.3 net would be #2 by 0.1 yards this year (Donnie Jones is currently #19 at 42.3). This year his net is 46.8 yards. I am drafting Sharp to be the punter, but in a pinch he can also kick fgs.

7. Ray Ray Armstrong, S, Faulkner University, 6’4, 220lbs, 4.59
Yes, I know he was suspended by Miami for 4 games and then an additional one because he had dinner with a marketing rep. I know he was ruled ineligible by the NAIA. I know he has not played football since 2011. I know that he is not the kind of player the Texans normally take. But here is why I would: Second-Team All-ACC selection in 2010 and recorded 79 tackles with three interceptions. He showed up big against Ohio State and Florida State. He is a fast, big, athletic safety. He needs coaching and Vance can be that coach to push him to become a better DB. I will take a chance on him in the 7th.

Ok, folks... let me have it!

It does not terrify me. lol
First JJ was cut during his contract IIRC and we get nothing for him but the 5th is good for Briesel. Funny I mock Ray Ray once but got blasted. I think Jones is too good to not be invited back at reasonable $ and who wouuld not want to punt for a Super Bowl team? We just spent a 5th for a kicker. Also I am good with Newton. Not sure if Harris returns or maybe Gardner replaces him. I could see a draft pick for OT but not first two rounds. 3 Amigos NT Hicks trumps your guy! lol

7. Ray Ray Armstrong, S, Faulkner University, 6’4, 220lbs, 4.59

Ok, folks... let me have it!

I like it. It fills some holes, provides depth, and has some players that I am a fan of myself.

1) I like upgrading RT, and agree 100% on Newton. And while I think FLuker grades out pretty highly, I worry about him fitting into the Texans scheme. You dont seem to have the same reservations, but I am concerned about his lateral movement and ability to make cut blocks. If this were the pick, I would be happy.

2) Hmmm... I like drafting a NT, but I just dont know enough about Floyd to say I like him. He has never stood out to me when I watch UF. I think that we could get some better value later.

3) Long should be a good OLB in the 3-4. He reminds me a lot of Reed in his pluses and minuses. Definitely happy with him in the 3rd.

3) I really like Stills, but I think he is a complementary player in the NFL. I great number 2, but he wont succeed as a number 1. However, I realize the odds of getting a number 1 this late in the draft is unlikely (which is why I advocate drafting one in the 1st or 2nd), and Stills is going to be an NFLer. Not thrilled, but I dont hate it. It does create quite the logjam at WR though. Between Posey/Martin/Jean/Walter/Stills, who gets cut, what does the depth chart look like?

4) Big fan of Borland., and of the Home Improvement joke. Great pick.

5) Sold on Millard. Heck of a player.

5) Dont know a lot about your OG. Do we need an OG? I have petty high hopes for Brooks and Jones. Still, this late in the draft grabbing some OL depth is never a bad decision.

6) Ehhhh, not a fan of drafting a P. Jones has been fine, and I think we could use this pick to add depth/STers at other positions.

7) Not sold on Armstrong. He is talented, but I dont think he moves well enough to work in Wade's D. Remember, Quin is the current SS. Armstrong would be better against the run, but much, much worse against the pass.

I might have some issue with spelling Fluker correctly at times only imagine on the sidelines & opposing fields...could he come in & beat Newton day one out of his RT position? Wider base, longer wingspan but not as quick, mobile.

Floyd does not strike me as a 3-4 NFL nose tackle. Really like his physical style of play & understand you fitting him in here early just think he is a better fit @ DT in a 4-3.

Travis Long is a little under-rated. I could see this being real good fit & value here for Texans, talk about depth @ OLB. Would assume Barwin is gone via free agency.

Kenny Stills is a bit like Keshawn don't you think? Like the player, good value just think Texans would go after a big physical specimen to develop this late.

Love Borland. We discussed him at great lengths. Would endorse this selection.

Millard is interesting. Guess you choose to avoid upgrading blocking TE with blocking FB & put Casey out in the flats, I get that.

OG in the 5th I get that, value, needed depth all good.

Texans have Bullock coming off IR, although Quinn is a stud.

Ray Armstrong, yeah I would take a shot on him in the 7th why not how many 7th rd. draft picks have actually worked out for the Texans anyway? His intelligence is main concern not if he has the football skills, control the mind & Texans could have a steal in this kid, would like to see him succeed.

Overall Good Draft, a little different approach but I could live with it :wesmantexanfan:

(compensatory for Mike Brisiel and/or Jacoby Jones )
Jones was released, so the Texans will not get compensation for him. They will get picks for Brisiel (5th or 6th), Jason Allen (5th or 6th), and Joel Dreessen (6th or 7th), as well as the 3rd for Mario.

1. Fluker, boy this is a toughy and RT is the biggest question mark on the team. It all depends on if you think Newton has what it takes to be the future at RT and own the position for years to come. Fluker would definitely anchor the RT spot and allow Newton to be a swing OT. I keep flip flopping on the Newton at RT issue, and still not sure. Fluker is a good pick though.
2. Floyd, I like the player but see him more as a DE in our 3-4, or as a 4-3 UT, more so than a 3-4 NT. He would add some flexibility to our D-line though. Maybe if he can add a little bulk/muscle without losing his speed/athleticism he'd be a good pick. How well can he anchor against a double team?
3. Long, I've heard the name batted around a little but not familiar with the player. This pick only makes sense if we lose Barwin to FA. I still think we get a discount on Barwin and he stays but honestly it's 50/50 at this time.
3b. Stills, I like the player but think the position should be addressed earlier. If still available he'd be a good pick.
4. Borland, tough undersized guy, seems like a Sharpton clone. I fear he's to small to take on OG and OT in the running game.
5. Millard, great player and fills a need but it seems a bit early for a FB.
5b. Long, I'm not familiar with the player but I love the position filled and the round selected. If he's willing to work and give 100% effort I'm sure the Texans would find room for him.
6. Sharp, I've had him in the 6th on some of my mocks as well and really like the idea of upgrading at P and getting an extra K in the process. I like the versatility.
7. Armstrong, I've been thinking about this guy as a late round pick as well but I'd put him on the practice squad and move him to play ILB. He's great against the run but very limited in pass coverage and with his athleticism I think he'd have a very good future at ILB.

Overall, not bad. I'd probably pick a larger ILB to stand up to the pounding the position takes but overall it's not bad.

We did just invest in a kicker, but we could certainly upgrade the punter. Jones is below average in terms of net punting. Part of that is special teams, but part of that is also ability. This team with a horrendous ST unit should be directionally punting to the sidelines and booming touchbacks. Jones simply doesn't have the leg for it.

I like it. It fills some holes, provides depth, and has some players that I am a fan of myself.

1. From what I have seen, Fluker looks rather agile and has good lateral movement. I have seen him running down the field making a second block. Kinda surprised me. With DL getting bigger and bigger having a big athletic body is necessary to keep running the ZBS portion of the playbook.

2. Fair enough. Let's see some more from him this year, especially nearer the end of the season.

3. My concern is like Reed he jumps into the early 2nd. For now, he is still here in the 3rd.

3. I understand the concern, but I think it could present mismatches for the defense. Defenses adjust to the scheme the offense is running. The Texans
have AJ and Jean to play the #1 WR spot. They can then use the other 4 interchangeably to completely wear out and confuse defenses. Plus, one of them can be a kick returner/punt returner. That is a potentially ton of speed on the field. The D may have to play a soft cover to prevent the speedsters from getting by them.

4. Thanks! The joke seemed to write itself.

5. Millard seems like the kind of guy built for the Kubi-offense.

6. The Texans can use a guy who can boom kicks out of the endzone. Jones cannot do that. They need directional punting. Jones can't do that.

7. Need to see more on Ray Ray. You may be right.

Thanks!

1. Imagine all the Texans fans "accidentally" misspelling his name on the back of their jerseys!!! That said, yes. I think he could definitely beat out Newton. Yes, longer reach and longer base, but still pretty athletic. Here is makign a downfield block.
fluker.jpg

2. Perhaps. He seems like a 1 gap penetrator like Earl or Cody, only better. Need to see some more tape on him.

3. Actually I don't think Barwin goes in free agency. I think he switches positions. Barwin has put on some weight and gotten a bit bigger. I actually think he would be a pretty good DE at his size.

3. Agree he is like Keshawn. But, if you add a lot of good pass catchers with speed, you can make things tough on a defense. The Lions a few years ago tried to go big WRs without speed to utter failure. The Patriots season where they went undefeated featured one big strong WR and a group of smaller quicker interchangeable ones. It gave defenses fits becuase it forced them to play a soft shell to prevent the speedsters from getting by them.

4. I like him too. Would be a great selection.

5. Gotta get depth at the lines.

6. Bullock is a good kicker, but Sharp is a very good punter. How much is a good punter worth? Jones is a below average punter who exposes the ineptitude of this team's ST. By kickign directionally it reduces the returns. By booming the kicks out of bounce it eliminates them completely.

7. The only one coming to mind is Troy Nolan.

Thanks BL! Love the feedback!!!

Jones was released, so the Texans will not get compensation for him. They will get picks for Brisiel (5th or 6th), Jason Allen (5th or 6th), and Joel Dreessen (6th or 7th), as well as the 3rd for Mario.

Thanks for the catch. Jones is released so nada. I wanted to be conservative and only go with a 3rd and 5th becuase I felt that was reasonable. If the Texans get additional picks, I will be thrilled!

1. Fluker is the kind of guy you can slot into the RT can be happy with. Big, strong athletic. As I said, its not a knock on Newton, he just may not be starting caliber. There is no shame in being a swing tackle. Butler did an admirable job in the role for a few years. Newton could do the same.

2. Yeah, Floyd seems to be one of the picks that isn't popular. I may need to rethink this one.

3. I have actually entertained the notion of switching Barwin to DE due to his bigger size and having him rotate with Smith. Then when SMith is cut, Barwin becomes a starter. He is solid against the run and can provide pass rush ability. Perhaps his weight gain and less then productive start is a blessing in disguise?

3. There is certainly an argument to be made that WR should be addressed earlier. Whom would you suggest and in what round?

4. I see Borland as a tough hard working, high motor guy. Having a guy like that in the middle of the D is usually never a bad idea. But yeah, size is definitely pushing him down.

5. Perhaps, but may need to go in the fifth before he is grabbed in the 6th elsewhere.

5. Thats the thing about him. You dont walk on at Nebraska, become a starter, and then become recognized by the Big 10 unless you are doing something well. Just having him on the team might inspire others who are beginning to coast to get their butts back in the gym.

6. A lot of people haven't liked this one, but I agree with you. ST is a third of the game. The Texans got a great kicker last year, now get a great Punter and have a little versatility.

7. That's an interesting idea. Ray Ray as an ILB. He'd need to add some weight, but that could be an interesting move for him.

1) There is a lot of football left, so we will be able to evaluate further. Maybe I just caught him on an off game, but while his power was certainly impressive, I did not see the extraordinary athleticism required for the Texans system. Furthermore, I think that Kubes will be wary of larger OL after Brooks.

2) This is a strong NT class, I think there are better candidates out there.

3) Jean is still quite the question mark in terms of long term potential. I think Stills is an ideal number 2 or slot guy, but I dont think he is a number 1. If we had a number 1 waiting in the wings, then I would be all for this pick. Is there a WR you like in the 2nd, then grab a NT here? I think that would improve your mock immensely.

5) Yeah, Millard is versatile as heck. Not the true FB type, but he is better than Casey as a power blocker. Love the pick.

6) I honestly believe that Jones is good enough, or that a replacement P can be found in FA. I agree that ST needs to be upgraded, but I think that should be done through coaching and depth players.

7) I like the idea of Ray Ray as an ILB. Having a nickel LB could help this D a lot, while Borland fills the need for a run stuffer.

Punters kick where they are told to. Jones' average is 47 yards and has kicked 66 yarder.

3. Barwin is not a 3-4 DE even with his increased size. He's either a 3-4 OLB or a 4-3 DE. If he added enough bulk to play 3-4 DE I think it would slow him down considerably. If anything he needs to drop about 10-15 lbs. and stay at 3-4 OLB with the Texans. I hate to say it, and hope that it doesn't happen, but BB may be right, there's a strong chance we could lose Barwin to FA because we're not going to keep a 1st round pick (Mercilus) at a depth position forever.

3b. I like Marquess Wilson and Cordarrelle Patterson in the 2nd round and Quinton Patton is probably a 3rd round pick but it might require some luck for Patton to be available to us in the 3rd. I like Cobi Hamilton as well in the 2nd or 3rd round.

5. Yes someone else may pick him before our pick in the 6th but we use a true FB so little that I've got it as my 7th round pick, Zach Boren. Also Taimi Tutogi as an UDFA. Honestly I'd like to have Vonta Leach back but that's not going to happen, but I want a guy just like him in short yardage/goal line situations.

6. Sharp in the 6th just makes so much sense from a field position stand point. This is the reason Jacksonville invested a 3rd round pick at P in this years draft and he's now one of the best P in the NFL. Pinning your opponent deep in their own territory is such a big deal for your defense. Also having an extra K on the squad for depth or kickoff purposes just helps alot when limited to a 53 man roster. It's also nice to solidify this position for years to come, since Jones is on the wrong side of 30, and not have to address it again any time soon.

7. Armstrong just screams future ILB to me, and he's got the height to easily add 10-15 lbs. to take the pounding and not lose much in terms of speed.
