Why No Discussion On Horrid Defense?

Am I the only one disappointed in those guys?

Supposed to be quality backups, what happened?

I realize that the two Viking backup qb's had lots of experience but damn.

Did anyone step up? Vanilla. I realize. But mano a mano we got manhandled.

Random question, had anyone else heard the name DJ Bryant before last night? I don't recall seeing anyone discuss him before the game.

I think when you have second and third teamers starting the game, you're not going to get comments on the defense as a whole, but mostly on individual players. In that vein, I've seen plenty of folks expressing great disappointment in several players with Keo clearly leading that parade.

Take a look at scores around the league for Week 4 preseason.

Then consider the fact that the peak for many of these guys' careers is playing special teams in the regular season.

Actually, DJ Bryant had quietely put together 4 good games.
I saw good tapes on him in all 4 games, and was focusing on him during this game.

I think he deserves at least a PS spot.

He's looked good in the first couple of preseason games. I don't think there's been a lot of buzz about him but I really liked what I saw from him in those games. He was getting good pressure... against scrubs, admittedly. The coaching staff seems to like him. I think there's a big question about him and Nading and either/or.

He had a QB pressure in the Saints game also.
I think he was around the play a few.

Many young guys showed flashes here and there, but it looks to me like Bryant had quite a few more flashes.

I guess you can say that he was consistent through all 4 games.

I recall seeing his name on some roster sheets and such, but never really paid attention to him. I don't recall seeing anyone around here discuss him outside of the gameday threads where his name would be mentioned after making a tackle.

Anyways, he made 2+ sacks last night (1 called back due to a bad helmet-to-helmet call), and he had a lot of pressure on the QBs. He might be worth adding to the p-squad, since we don't really have any good d-lineman candidates for it.

I couldn't remember offhand if he played and flashed in the Saints game, so I left it out. I remembered being surprised and impressed with him in the Panther game.

He was in on at least 3 positive plays that I notice:

1. A QB hit on Chase Daniels who managed to complete a 5yd pass.
2. He forced CD out of the pocket on another play; the QB ran for some 10 yards, but it wasn't Bryant's fault.
3. He came in (around the LT) right after R.Moore got to the QB Canfield from the other side (near the 2 min warning) to force an incompletion.

It doesn't seem that ICAK agree, oh well, everybody is entitled to their opinion, I guess. :turtle:
I saw only last half but one play Brandon started back with his guy but looked to his left & started that way only to fall back to cover his guy who was "gone". Safety (Nolan?) came over but was way too late.

I believe that happened twice, once with Nolan laying a hit on the big Vikes WR (Aromashadu I think), and again with Keo trying to come down to the sideline to cover the WR who was gone. I think both went for TDs too, but I haven't rewatched the game yet.

Yeape, in the other thread, I had the link to the highlights of both of those plays.

Also, I think Harris didn't do a good job on the 76yd TD run either.
I discussed that in the other thread as well.

Obviously, I don't put the blame solely on Harris.
But he did have safety help; he needs to use them correctly.

I hope what we saw today isnt what we can expect all year long against the run .... The Fish ran the ball well especially early.

It is cause for concern.

a word i plan on repeating and i expect we'll hear a lot after this game, is "penetration".

we had none. this isnt an oversized 34 setup meant to occupy the offense at the line of scrimmage, we're a break the line with our front 7 in 1v1 situations. we failed that scenario spectacularly today. we at best stood up the offensive line ... a complete win for the offense. we had no push, and only got into the backfield when a very young unit failed to pick up our blitz. we know what our front 7 can do, so i'm not worried, but today we didnt win any 1v1 matchups, and (to be polite) were at best playing patty-cake at the line.

Lets remember that Bush is no longer a joke running the ball. He had a very good year last year...

With that said...I'll take no touchdowns scored against every week thank you.

Because the defense gave up three points and intercepted the ball three times and caused 3 fumbles to go along with a zillion swat downs. They were outstanding today.

And for the run-stopping naysayers... 79 yards total rushing by the Dolphins. Seventy-nine. That's team rushing. BTW, same as our sucky RB who ran for 79 all by himself. Today was a great game. I'm psyched.

bush is still a weakling, and the only reason they didnt walk into the endzone is because of turnovers. bush was able to sit comfortably behind the line and wait until a lane opened up. it's a results business, but had they continued to run the ball, we were in trouble. their offensive line dominated our defensive line.

Yeah he's still weak but he's a better back now than when he entered the league definitely. It is a results business and a what have you done for me lately. Bush as of lately has produced. He doesn't have to be strong to do that, he's always relied on his agility and speed. I'm not surprised he was able to have a more than solid game.

Last season he pretty much did the same thing. I think it may be safe to say that Bush has vastly improved as a every down back. He averaged 5.0 ypc last season and did the same today.

Still though the Texans got the stops exactly when they needed (on 3rd downs) and created the TOs to take full control of the game.

no argument here, bush has definitely improved, and i was very impressed by his vision and patience. i didnt mean it literally when calling bush a weakling (though it fits), i meant relative to other starting runningbacks. he's certainly improved quite a bit, and looked solid today, but is hardly comparable to the top backs we'll face this season.

he's a poor man's chris johnson, someone that cush absolutely eats. anything but week 1 and we hold him to 50 yards at best and this discussion doesnt happen.

I didnt go thru the play by play to get exact stats .... but the Fish had 50+ yards rushing in the first quarter and a half .... at that time , the score was 0-3 in their favor. If not for those rookie mistakes .... this game could have been a lot closer.

The Fish are pretty solid on both lines .... and until the wheels came off Tannehill looked like a quality NFL QB.

The Dolphins are a lot better than what they are given credit for. Their defense is solid and their offensive line is good as well. Reggie Bush is a good running back with a lot of talent.

That being said their offense only scored 3 points off our defense.

Yeah , Im rewatching the first quarter now .... their line play on both sides was very solid and Bush , for all the heat he has taken is really quick thru the holes. Just have to wonder if this will happen against "Better teams".

Until the mistakes , Tannehill was cruising along .... and didnt look like a rookie QB .... then the sh!t hit the fan. With better QB play , this game could have been too close for comfort. They wont face rookies every week .... in fact , they face a murderers row of QB's this season.

100% agree. I was worried that the Texans were already over looking this gave due to everyone in the media over hyping the Dolphins destruction. And until the Dolphins started coughing up the ball my fear was being played out.

I actually think that todays sloppy play was a good thing. Maybe they will head the wake up call and go out and crush our divisional foes in their house next week.

I know a lot of people are down on the Jaq's ... but they have a solid running game and a respectable defense. MJD led the league in rushing last season .... I just hope we dont see a repeat of what Bush was able to do early today next week ....

Like I said in another thread, the Jags are going to get off the bus handing the ball to MJD. They are going to be licking their chops at the idea of stuffing the ball down our proverbial throats.

NFL.com has Miami with 79 yards rushing. I guess they didn't try to run much after we got the big lead and didn't have too much success with it when they did. They only totaled 19 attempts.

I went back and looked at the play by play .... they had better than 50 when the score was tied at 3 with 6 minutes and change left in the second quarter. Had the trend continued , they could have put up ~150.

After giving up three INT's and three TD's in such a short span , they pretty much were forced to abandon the run in the second half.

If we're extrapolating the trend, then the Dolphins also would have scored about 9 pts.

Antonio Smith:

(on the Texans performance) "First half it seemed like we were getting our feet wet. Trying to get into the flow of a real game and then the game plan cause nobody game plans each other in the preseason and they had a couple of good runs. One good run play actually that they kept running til we has to figure out what they had going, but overall I think we played a real good game."

(on RB Reggie Bush having success running) "They did a thing where they open the splits up between the center and the guard to give Reggie more space to fake like he's going outside but cut it back up inside so by the time we honed in and figure it out. There weren't that many more running yards after that."

The textbook definition of .... HORRID Defense! LOL :listening

I believe we were talking about our "Horrid Defense". Keep taking my posts of out context.

My point was, you can't extrapolate points...or really even yards for that matter, but it makes more sense with yards at least because you can see where they abandoned the run...

They weren't going to abandon attempting to score points.

And this thread was started in pre season. I don't think the OP was saying that the defense was going to be horrid this year only that we didn't look great in his opinion in the pre season.

I don't get it.

Does someone pointing out what they think is a weakness or a fault with the team upset some of you guys? Just seems like some of you take it personal.

The D started shaky, but obviously made adjustments as the game went along. Let's not forget the defense only gave up 3 points. 3 POINTS!

The point of my post was that extrapolating anything is foolish. Anyone can pick a point in a game and extrapolate from there to get the result they want.

The argument is, until a certain point, something was happening. But you can't disregard what happened and what happened afterwards.

I completely agree with all of you that the run defense needs to improve. But at the same time, if this is our run defense getting beat, 3 points is not worth complaining about.

Our run defense was a weakness last year and it's still a weakness this year.

We ended up with a pretty good defensive standing against the run last year simply because people didn't get a chance to run against us as much as they would have liked.

We gave up 4.1 yards a rush which is tied for about 11th in the league. But teams only ran against us 378 times which was 4th fewest in the league. We gave up about the same yards per rush and the same yards per pass yesterday that we gave up last season.

We need to find a way to fix the weakness against the run or eventually, someone's going to use it against us.

I'm not that worried about the defense. It bent a lot yesterday, but didn't break. And several times, it forced turnovers. That's what you want your defense to do. You're not going to force 3 and out every series and the Dolphins were 2-10 on 3rd down, which means we were pretty good at stopping them on third down. We need to improve our defense and force more 3rd downs.

Can we play better? Yes. Are we perfect? No. But there's no way the defense was "horrid."
