my first mock draft

Waterboy
First time doing one of these so go easy please :kitten:

1. Alshon Jeffery WR South Carolina- This guy can play football. great hands and catches everything that is thrown at him. He can also make crazy circus catches and uses his size and strength to overpower cornerbacks. He could become a solid #2 receiver and take over the #1 spot when Andre is gone. He had a great 2010 season and was arguably the best wide receiver then and one of the only reason he wasn't as productive last year was because he lost his QB and star RB so defenses targeted him.

2. Ronnell Lewis OLB Oklahoma- You can never have enough pass rushers. Lewis has an explosive first step and an excellent motor. Uses a combination of speed and power to get past the defender and also does not give up on a play. Hasn't produced as much as i would of like in college but has the potential to be a stud. He can challenge Reed for the other OLB spot and potentially replace Barwin if we somehow don't resign him next year.

3. Josh Chapman NT Alabama- anchor of a great defense last year and played despite a ACL injury. He is tough, strong at the point of attack, and has a powerful bull rush. He can rotate in with Cody this year and become our starting nose tackle next year when Cody becomes a free agent. Drafting Chapman also allows Wade to move Earl Mitchell to DE, where i think he will be more productive. Chapman is a solid tough player and while he won't make many plays on the ball carrier, he will open up gaps for our linebackers to make plays.

4. David Molk C Michigan- Molk won the Rimington Trophy for best center. I think that he could make the transition to guard and challenge Caldwell for the RG spot. He has a quick first step which is important in the ZBS. He also displayed his strength at the combine by benching 225 pounds 41 times. I think he can be very successful in our ZBS and can help replace Briesel at the RG spot and Chris Myers later down the road.

4b. Greg Childs WR Arkansas- Childs could have potentially been up there with Blackmon and Floyd if not for his injury. He's smooth in and out of his breaks and is a excellent route runner. He can go up and get the deep ball and has pretty good hands. He is a decent run blocker which is important in our offense and has soft reliable hands. He can be the fourth receiver behind Dre, Walter, and Jeffery and him and jeffery can really improve our WR corp.

5. Vontaze Burflict ILB Arizona state- I figured it was worth a late round pick to take a risk on this guy if he falls this far. Burflict went for a 1st round pick and being compared to ray lewis to having his stock drop because of the combine. He is big, athletic, and violent. It would be very hard to run up the middle with him and Cushing playing ILB. He has the natural instinct to find the football and is a very solid tackler. he is a high reward pick that can potentially be great if he puts the effort in.

6.Randy Bullock K A&M- He was one of the most accurate kickers in 2011, making 29-33 field goals. While he can't replace Rackers ability to tackle people on kickoffs, i don't think there would be much of a drop off from Rackers to Bullock.

7. Case Keenum QB Houston- A developmental QB for Kubiak to groom. He shattered many NCAA records. Keenum can be a decent backup and i think the texans should draft him if he's still available. He is pretty accurate but some say he lacks arm strength. He can replace Leinart and become our 3rd string QB behind Schaub and Yates.

I don't think I've said this about anybody's Mock, but I love it. Every single pick.

If it fell that way I wouldn't complain at all. Of course there are guys that I would probably rather have than the ones you picked in some rounds, but there aren't any picks that I don't like which is rare.

I like it...I don't think there are any picks that are unrealistic as far as slotting goes...Fills a lot of needs with solid players.

quick edit on Burfict...I don't think he is Texanny enough...even in the 5th round.

I really think somebody will take a shot on Burfict in the 2nd round. I just hope it's not us.

Good job on your 1st attempt!

The only things I don't like are taking a chance Burfict at all (head case/potential locker room cancer) and taking Jeffrey with the 26th pick when we could probably get him in the 2nd round now with a trade back. His stock has taken a hit since he lost a lot of weight for the Combine and then didn't run or participate in the receiving drills. He has to do well at his Proday to get back in to consideration for the 1st round. I liked Jeffrey for awhile as our 1st pick but started to hear reports about him being slow and not able to separate, and then about his weight being too high and then too low. I just don't know about him anymore. He seems like he has a high All-Pro potential or a high bust potential. It's a risky pick IMO. Also, don't think the Kubes would take Keenum. He's not quite tall enough and I don't think he fits what Kubes likes his QB's to do.

Other than that I like the rest of the picks and would be happy with them if it fell this way. Good job.

Yeah i understand, but to me, all the wr's after Blackmon and Floyd are risky picks. I do not like Hill at all and don't think he has what it takes to become a NFL wr. He is more of a track star than a football athlete and just barely had as much receptions as the texans draft pick. Randell hasn't produced at the college level like Jeffrey so who knows how he will turn out. there are weaknesses and strengths of all the wide receivers but i think Jeffery has the highest chance of being great and is less risky than Hill. This is what his coach said about him:

He’s a very good, intelligent football player. Obviously he’s very big – 6’4", 230 pounds – and he actually runs better than you’d think he would. He just has a knack for receiving the football, a natural ability to catch the ball the way he does. He has very strong hands. He’s kind of quiet, doesn’t say much, doesn’t have a lot of expression, but he’s sharper than he gets credit for, he really is. He’s a neat young man, I haven’t coached many like him, I really haven’t, just a very talented, hard-working kid.

He has the talent to be great in the NFL and has actually produced in college unlike a lot of the receivers that are being considered for the texans 1st round pick. Even though he might have some problems separating from cornerbacks in the NFL, he uses his body very well to box out defenders. He also has an amazing vertical so he can out leap cornerbacks. Our offense doesn't require a speedy fast receiver and i believe that he can definitely get more separation than Walter and be more of a threat because of his athleticism.

As for Burflict, I think that Wade, Herring and Cushing can calm him down and teach him to not be over aggressive. He has all the athletic ability, he just needs proper coaching. The veterans in the Texans locker room (AJ, Schaub, Cushing, Smith) can teach him how to be a professional and stay out of trouble. Another player that can play ILB instead of Burflict is J.K. Schaffer from Cincinnati. He's supposed to be drafted in the mid to late rounds and was the the emotional leader and player maker of the cincinnati defense.

Good to see another mocker on the board. No criticisms just some thoughts:

Alshon brings to many "what if ?s for me. Do you give this guy millions of dollars and then say hope you keep the fat off? You sort of expect linemen to have weight issues but not "elite" WRs. I'm with you on 2&3 and both will be on my mock probably.

Would encourage you to re-think drafting a center so high. Myers has never missed a start and a 4th round pick will not help you any more than a 6-7. Use your 4a for a good OG/OT combo. Check out TBob Hebert (yeah son of you know who) from LSU who will be there in 7th and who has played OG and C many games. He will probably never replace Myers but is definitely a cheap fill in. Next season you draft the Myers replacement.

Great work on your first effort and hope to see you here with the long time mockers!

The coach say what it takes to get his players into NFL so he can use that to recruit better players for his future team. I usually don't put much into a coach's comments.

Overall very nice draft. Everyone seems to be taken in the correct rounds with the exception of Childs, I doubt he falls that far and can see him going late 2nd or early 3rd. His size/speed/hands combo will make him very tempting to someone. I'm also not a fan of Keenum but our 7th round pick stands little chance of making the team anyway. Good job for your first time.

thanks for the replies. Jeffery put up some decent stats today at south carolina pro day. He ran a 4.48 40 , a vertical of 36.5 inches, and a 10-2 broad jump. I still think that he can be very successful in the nfl. He is a humble and quiet guy like Dre. His teammates and coaches say he is a hard worker and he has arguably the best hands in the draft.

That tenth of a second is kind if strange.

But those are good numbers. I'd take Alston in a heartbeat. Even at 26. If we could somehow trade down or get him in the second that would be tremendous value.

Alston is a beast though and would be well worth the 26th pick IMO.

Well now, that might put him back in to the 1st round conversation. Did they say how much he weighed or how well he did in position drills?

Just watched the SC Pro-Day video and read the article over at NFL.com. They said Jeffery weighed in at 213 which is 20 pounds less than what he played at. Mayock had him timed at 4.50 and 4.51 and said he performed well, but still had him as a 2nd round pick. I did see a Texans scout/coach in the video with the other coaches and scouts so at least they were checking him, and others, out. If they are going to get him I think they will have to do it with the 1st pick or trade down and get him in the early 2nd. I don't think he will be there when we pick late in the 2nd.

He weighed 213 pounds today which is 3 pounds less than what he weighed at the combine. His broad jump and vertical was solid but not spectacular but enough to get him into the discussion of becoming a first round pick again.

Thanks! I might have drafted center a bit high but I think Molk can play RG and help replace Briesel. I didn't like what i saw from Caldwell last year and we haven't seen much of Shelly Smith. Also, if Myers gets injured this season i would feel a lot better having Molk switch back to center rather than having Thomas Austin play. Ill check out Hebert, he comes from a football family which is good.

When talking about a high risk player like Alshon, I hesitate especially at a need position. WR is deep this draft, should we not try for less risky guys? Even Floyd has remained away from booze this past season as I understand. If we had a year of Jeffery maintaining weight, I'd be less adverse.
