Texans' season so far (trying to be unbiased and emotion free)

So, after 6 games we are 3-3, and I'm reading a lot of doom and gloom messages on this board. Let's look at each game and see what we expected vs what we have.

  • vs Indy - expected a win, got a blowout w/o Manning and w/o Foster, everybody's happy, but a somewhat alarming pattern emerged in that game as the Texans scored 0 points in the second half.
  • at Miami - expected a win, got a win with Foster being limited.
  • at NO - a win would have been nice, but really I expected a loss, which is what we got. Was a little heartbreaking to have a lead late in the game and give it up, but it was against one of the top 3 offences in the league.
  • vs Pit - expected a win, but was somewhat nervous about it. Dominated Pit on both sides of the ball, should have won by more than 7 if it weren't for stupid penalties. A very good win vs a good team (they're 4-2 btw)
  • vs Oak - expected a win, but lost in a heartbreaking fashion against an emotionally charged team. You could even say, it was "their Superbowl". Lost Mario for the season. No AJ. Bad loss.
  • at Bal - expected a loss, got a loss. No Mario, no AJ. Really, I didn't expect anything other than what happened. I was just happy we didn't suffer any more injuries.

So, in each of the 6 games we've played, we had at least 1 of our 3 best players missing for at least a part of the game. We beat a good Pit team (as we should have), and we lost to very good NO and Bal teams on the road (also as expected). We also lost to an emotionally charged Oakland at home, which sucks.

I still don't see why everyone is ready to ship Schaub out of town. At least half the league would love to have him instead of their QB.

So, even though we're 3-3, I'm still optimistic for the rest of the season. I expect a win at Ten, but even if we lose, I still don't see much of a reason for panic. Maybe I'm just more patient than others...

The steelers are not a good team. They are very average.

It's less gloom and "doom" than what you think, and more gloom and mediocre. Same ol' Texans, and they're not going 3-13. They might get to 10-6, but my bet is on 9-7. That might be good enough to win the division, but everyone knows why it would be, if it is.

And if you want to talk about expectations, people expected the offense to light it up like they have for the last couple seasons, and the defense to be improved. The defense has improved, and the offense has regressed.

I think at the end of the season their record will indicate that they're better than average.

Agree, but let's see where we are when both AJ and Foster are at 100% for a full game... You can't possibly expect the offense to not miss a beat when one of these guys is not on the field. It's not an excuse, it's reality, IMO.

Here is my problem here, I could be excited about the Texans making the playoffs but at the same time if we don't beat the teams on our schedule that are legitimate contenders to make it to the Superbowl or at the very least deep into the playoffs I still can't get that excited about it. I mean if we go to the playoffs because we beat the Colts without manning twice, the Titans without their only deep threat and a Quarterback old enough to be Derrick Masons father, and a team with a Rookie quarterback who really cares. The 3-3 record worries me not because we are 3-3 and don't have a chance to make the playoffs, but about the quality of the teams we are losing to each week. I don't want to sustain the status quo of being a mediocre team and not being able to move into the small list of truly elite teams in the NFL because people are satisfied with a first round loss in the playoffs. I like Schaub but hes having a bad year so far, I think Kubiak would be alright as an offensive coordinator but we need a coach that forces him to adapt to the game as its played. I haven't seen yet seen him understand the concept of 'best laid plans'. With the way we have been stacking up talent we should be having a run at a Texans Dynasty where we not only make the playoffs but go deep into the playoffs for the next five years here. I just don't see us taking that step yet, and I am not sure the current leadership on this team and our current QB is the duo that is going to be making us that dynasty team.

When I first saw that post I was all set to toss out the B/S card. But looking at who they beat, you might be right. They've only faced one "high" quality team, the Ravens, who crushed them. If not for so many penalties, we would have embarrassed them on the scoreboard.

Their wins were against the Seahawks, the Colts, Tennessee, and Jacksonville. They killed Tenn. and just barely held on the beat J-ville with a rookie QB.

Based on what? The fact that they are the Steelers? They have an old defense, a QB who looks lost at times and a poor running game. They have been thumped by the only "elite" team they played, and we dominated them if not for a few penalties. What about the steelers is anything but average? Are they a top 15 team? Maybe 14th but that's about it.

I agree with you on Kubes. I'd love to have him as an OC with a real head coach. Reality is though, that we already have our next HC. Yep, it's Wade, and that is frustrating.

I also agree that Schaub is not elite, but how many truly elite QB's are there? 4, maybe 5? The truth is we can't do much better at QB than Schaub, but we can do much, much worse.

Based on what?

#1 vs Passing
#15 vs Rushing
#12 Passing
#11 Rushing

That's top third of the league in 3 out of those 4. To me, it's still above average. Maybe not by much, but above average. And yes, it is partially based on the fact that they're the Steelers, even though I agree that it's subjective.
