What say you? Is that crucial for the Texans to get to the next level?

i think anytime ur Quarter back turns the ball over at crucial times it is a concern. But i think the Defense has put the O in that position to make play after play to get back into games that it seems Schaub makes more mistakes than he does.

I think it's more about the game plan. The Texans game plan at Indy last season was atrocious! You can't work the short passing game vs. Indy. On 3rd and 6, the Colts defensive backs sell out on first moves with the expectation that the QB will be hurried by Mathis/Freeney to throw the ball or the pressure will get there. We need to pound the edges with the running game, knocking Freeney and Mathis in the mouth. Then, we need to take shots downfield in the deep passing game and also work some screens. Here's another crazy thought: how about some chips and double teams on their only two defensive playmakers?

I have no issue with his ability to protect the ball. The only game I can remember that being a factor was the Ravens game.

I think I'd feel better calling Schaubby a "Top 10 Quarterback" if I saw him hit a receiver in stride down the field. I did see a lot of "hold up let me wait here until the ball arrives" last year.

My opinon is that it is not Matt's ability to protect the ball that has cost us games in the past. When the QB is putting up the numbers that Matt has on a consistent basis, and we still get beat by a point or two, that to me means the Defense has failed. We got so much production out of foster and Schaub last season, and still managed to loose games like the Jacksonville game. I hope to see a few things 1. The offense comes out and plays the first half. I grow tired of seeing them come out flat. 2. The Defense comes out fired up and ready to play and we get some 3 and outs and take an early lead. I mean really, how many games did we struggle to come back in the second half of the game?

This. Schaub made play after play after play in that Baltimore game for example. If his receivers would have caught the ball in the first half, and if the defense could have done anything, then Schaub would not have had to be completely lights out in the second half. With at least an average defense, Schaub's mistakes will be minimized.

Well, the call in overtime that had him throw out of the endzone like they did during the Baltimore game....that was a bad call. I do not put the blame on him in that play. That was the playcalling there.

If I'm getting this right, it seems everyone in this thread is saying Matt doesn't need to improve his game at all?

Pretty much dude comes through in the clutch and is accurate and smart. Also saw him launch one to Aj in the preseason like 50 yards down the field and hit him in stride .... he can do it if he is able to step into his throw.

Even if it was a bad call, Matt should have never thrown that pass. Audible out of the play or check down to another option, but you never throw that pass.

He threw that ball while back pedalling, he doesn't have the arm strength to do that in a tight window, he should have thrown the ball away.

Some of the highlights were tipped balls and not his fault (well maybe to low of a pass over the DL) and some were him holding the ball down to low and getting sacked from behind resulting in a fumble. He just needs to clean up a few mental errors. All in all he's a great QB who plays well under pressure, Theisman had to critique him about something.

Didnt the Dolts sign two new DE's who are suppose to be better against the run specifically for these types of situations - and to keep Mathis & Freeney fresh for the 4th quarter ?!

It'll be interesting to see how they rotate those guy's ....

Don't know. I still think that was a blown route. QB's have to throw on faith sometimes. I think JJ wasn't on the same page and didn't make the cut Schaub anticipated (whose error in judgement that was being unknown).

He threw that ball while back pedalling, he doesn't have the arm strength to do that in a tight window, he should have thrown the ball away.

Arm strength was not a factor on that play. I can't even imagine why that would be mentioned. Earlier in the game he threw a ball three times as far to Walter into a non-existent window. Heck Gruden was gushing all game long about how Schaub was throwing lasers.

Well, the call in overtime that had him throw out of the endzone like they did during the Baltimore game....that was a bad call. I do not put the blame on him in that play. That was the playcalling there.

Yep, especially when you consider WHY Schaub threw that pass:

NT runs over Myers and gets right in Schaub's face, who is standing in the endzone. Coach's should've known that was likely. You run the ZBS with that kind of center and you've got to expect that on pass plays against a D like the Ravens. Ya gotta run the ball from that spot on the field.

For those wondering why he through it where he did:

NT was in his face too soon and nobody was done running their routes. He threw it to a guy (Jacoby, I think) who was not looking because it wasn't time to yet. For Schaub, it was take that risk or take the safety (game over).

One other thought say he threw a strike to AJ for a td on that play we still just 7-9 and miss the playoffs

Joe Thiesman is a D-Bag in my humble opinion, but then again I don't like very many people especially Foosball Commentators whether they were former players, coaches, or blow hards.

Anyway Matt has started protecting the ball pretty well the last couple of years. the guys has thrown for a gazillion yards the last two seasons, of course he's gonna have some picks. Some have been a crucial times, but I don't think that means he's not clutch.

If you pull enough film on any QB your gonna find a nail in the coffin INT here and there.

Matt has room to improve, but if he plays at 09' and 10' level and the D gets its head out of it's ass we move up to a 9-7 or 11-5 team instantly, period.

Matts biggest weakness has been the defenses that we've fielded.

Matt is a really good qb so I don't want to pick his game apart. So I'll phrase it like this: The things that separate Matt from The top tier qb's are 1) arm strength 2) the ability to keep plays alive 3) play off success 4) a play making defense

2 of those things have nothing to do with Matt and the other 2 can be compensated for so I say we are doing pretty good at the qb position.

What say you? Is that crucial for the Texans to get to the next level?
First, let's talk about beating the Colts, tomorrow. Schaub has thrown pick 6s in the last 2 losses to the Colts. He felt he had to win the game, and he was probably right. On Sunday, he doesn't have to win the game by himself. Matt has to play smart, protect the football, and not allow easy scores to Indy. Because they're going to have a tough time scoring without getting help from the Texans. Don't try to do too much, Matt.

hmmm Redskins and Chiefs game, Maybe ?!?!?!?

QBs need wins to be considered great and that should change this year for ours. 4500 yds and our points per game, this QB can take us to the Super Bowl and that's what I want our QB to do. Evry player has things to work on.

Good post, he won't be in a position to put the team on his back and score, and score some more. I honestly believe that as a US american.

Step the F up defense. Pretty please?

Are you seriously disputing Schaub's severe lack of mobility/escapability?

To say it's a severe problem is stretching. The reality is no one gives two shits about his mobility/escapability. If the Texans were enamored with those qualities they would have picked this guy up...
:vincepalm:

The point was that mobility is one of the things that separates Schaub from the elite QBs. I believe that to be accurate, especially since he also lacks a quick release which would help compensate. I didn't mean a ruunning quarterback per se, just the ability to keep a play alive until something developes like Rodgers and Brees on Thursday. And to claim that NO ONE gives two shits about this flaw in his game is the stretch sir.

hopefully this year the D and ST can put the O in a better position and have more touches ?????? thats the plan after all

Matts biggest weakness has been the defenses that we've fielded.

In more ways than the obvious one.

The more subtle reason, in terms of the defense we have fielded, is that Matt Schaub is tasting doses of 3-4 Defense in practice now.

And before people say "Yeah, well our defense last year would mimic a 34 Defense during the preparation week anyways..." we're talking about Frank Bush vs. Wade Phillips. Night and day difference.

Matt and his crew are now facing exotic looks in weekly practices that they were used to seeing only on game days. This will go a long way toward making Matt Schaub think better about what he's seeing pre-snap, what he'll get in the midst of the play itself, and what he needs to do the next time around.

Whereas he couldn't practice those things until the next time he faced a 34 Defense (on a game day) he can run that "simulation" again in practice and work on it.

I think this is an often unheralded "side effect" of Wade Phillips coming to Houston to install his 34 Defense. It's going to improve Schaub's game, and the game of everyone else on the offense. Wade Phillips just might turn out to be the best thing Jerry Jones ever did for us.

True. Marino. Manning. Fouts. Etc. At the same time they had/have better pocket presence + a quicker release which help extend plays.
True enough, but Schaub's biggest liabilty on the very ggod/great QB list seems to be playing for the Texans.
To once again quote TK, winning cures all.
Schaub ain't no Manning, Brady Montana, Elway, etc. I wouldn't say Schaub is an all-time top 10 QB, but for the last 3 years, he's been top 10 by an easy margin and top 5 in some harder margins.

Joe Thiesman is a D-Bag in my humble opinion,

Joe ThEEESeman needs to STFU to be honest. Statistically he turned the ball over way more than Schaub.

I am not a Schaub fan, I do not think he is a top ten QB, but with him being healthy the last 3 years, I have no problems with him, and feel we did really great getting him.

He needs to get better in the first half of games, but turnovers are not his downfall in my opinion

Huh? That's the 9-11 Tribute in Light Memorial.
I realize that. To post that in a Schaub forum on a MB is inappropriate, to me. You didn't post that in regard to 9-11. You posted that in regards to a Schaub post that said "as a US American" in regards to Schaub as a QB. To even remotely compare the two, especially on the eve of 9-11, is done in poor taste.

Why should I keep it to myself? Do you think I could care less about what you think? Why not just man up and say you screwed up with the unintentional comparison?

Schaub isn't perfect, sure he makes some mistakes, but he's plenty good enough to get us to the playoffs. Thiesman needs to shut up, he's just trying to make headlines by stirring the pot.

Huh? Some of the best QB's in NFL history haven't been mobile QB's.

Don't confuse "mobile QBs" with "running QBs"

Mobile QBs keep their eyes up field while the two-stepping around the pocket or maybe rolling out (when the pocket collapses) to keep the play alive. Drew Brees, Ben Roethelisburger, Dan Marino, Joe Montana were all pretty good at dancing around the pocket or rolling out to keep a play alive.

Running QBs are folks like M.Vick (the early years - he's cutting back on the running thing now), V.Young, Randall Cunningham, and Steve Young.

Matt Schaub has shown pretty good pocket awareness and sometimes extends the play by moving up in the pocket. But he's not as good as Brees and the others when it comes to mobility and escape ability. He doesn't have the wheels Brees has and he's not hard to bring down like Big Ben is.

Matt's not perfect but their ain't many QBs now playing I'd swap him for in a straight up trade.

I agree that Schaub really isn't the problem.
Our defense gets better (because it really can't be worse than last year) and Schaub doesn't have to carry the team as much. We had terrible starting field position from our defense last year and that forced Schaub to work miracles.

As a former Schaub hater, I've come around because of what he does. Is he perfect? Nope. But he is a top 10 QB in the league, I can't see how anyone could argue with that. Top 5? You might get a debate there.

I'm happy as hell we have him. And after all this time, I'll just have to say those two 2nd round picks that I bitched about so much was well worth it.

Say, that reminds... Is Schaub Elite....

Some say yes, some say no...... Some who say no cite his TD to INT ratio. While he is usually around the 2:1 ratio, they don't consider that elite.

NFLN has been touting a 3:1 ratio out there, which Matt has never been close.

Forget about the defense, forget about wins, as far as QBs go, If Schaub's numbers stay the same, but he gets to a 3:1 TD/INT ratio or lets say he has had a 3:1 ratio over the last 2 seasons, would Matt look like a better QB?

Why does Aaron Rodgers name come up more frequently than Matt Schaub's when talking about "elite" QBs?

Manning didn't even make it to 2:1.

I think it's somewhat short-sighted for the ratio to be a criteria for "elite" status. Schaub has a much better running game than Aaron Rodgers or Peyton Manning, etc. Schaub moves the ball down the field through the air and on the ground and we punch it in on the ground.

I think when Schaub gets into the playoffs he'll be considered an elite QB. The numbers are there it's just he hasn't won anything.
