Texans sign former Chargers, Dolphins LB Tim Dobbins

Here's an analysis of him coming out of college, but of course, this was 5 years ago. He could have changed a lot.

Positives: Looks the part of a physical inside linebacker -- well-built, athletic physique with solid upper body muscle tone, tight waist and abdomens, thick thighs and calves, broad shoulders and minimal body fat (6.2 percent) … Best when playing inside the box, as he plays at a low pad level and has better straight-line quickness than lateral agility … Shows very good agility and balance attacking the rush lanes and has a good feel for blocking schemes … Disciplined going after the ball and has the strength and leverage needed to play at the point of attack … Holds ground firmly and stays on his feet pretty well vs. double teams … Does a good job of sifting through traffic to get to the ball inside and has the agility to get wide and make the play … Good at using his hands to protect his body vs. low blocks … Demonstrates awareness and quickness getting his hands up to knock down passes at the line of scrimmage … When he locates the gaps, he shows good urgency slipping through the hole to close on the pocket.

Negatives: Best against the run, as he appears tentative making proper reads in pass coverage … Has some hip stiffness that prevents him from getting good depth in his pass drops … Can square up and attack blockers, but while he does a good job of using his hands to protect his body on the move, he lets blockers get underneath his pads too much working at the line, causing him to struggle when trying to shed … Too tight in his turn coming out of transition to mirror receivers on intermediate routes … Gets a little reckless when tackling, as he tries to punish backs despite showing decent wrap-up technique.

I don't know much about how he was in the pros though. Seems like a decent depth signing who can spot start.

Apparently he played in all 16 games last year, started 6 and had 47 tackles and a sack.... and brings some 3-4 experience and has played for Phillips before.

Anyone know anything else about this guy?

Played inside LB in the 3-4 for both Miami and San Diego. Probably depth/insurance for DeMeco and maybe ST. No idea what he's like on ST.

Drafted by the Chargers before Wade's final season as their DC.

They signed Dobbins and lost Mark Anderson to New England

Has Mark Anderson ever played as a OLB in the 3-4 before? I know the Pats are supposedly switching to more of a 4-3 apparently, and he will be a DE there just like here. Losing Anderson doesn't really bother me. We get Barwin back and we drafted Reed.

I am more worried about the health of our two starting ILBs.

Would of rather they have kept Diles but understood why the Texans couldn't. A definite need for depth purposes.

Nice pick up. I don't think we have any 3-4 experienced LB's in our roster. Dobbins is experienced not just in 3-4 but familiar with Wade's system(In 2006,only one year but better than nothing) which is a plus for us.

Go Texans!!!

I may have come across the reason why an ILB move was finally made. Did anyone know that Sharpton was sidelined for a shoulder injury?

Aww, crap. I was thinking he'd be impact this year. Hope it's minor?

I was thinking he was signed because of Cush's knee.

Seems like a pretty decent pick up. Apparently he was traded to Mia from SD last year due to his contract, and was released from the dolphins just last week for the same.... to clear cap room.

Fins fans were surprised to see him go and say he is a smash mouth run stopper, but a bit of a liability against the past.

One of best if not the best typo of all time! That was great man and the funny thing is that it is so true! Rep coming your way.

Seriously though, I like this signing because this guy has played under Phillips and not only will he can start for us if needed, but he can teach the other guys what's required to play lb in a 3-4. Good signing and I finally feel we have addressed every major area of concern. Now I hope everything pans out right for us.

Heard this morning that he was 100% after shoulder surgery but evidently not.

The report I quoted must have be erroneous because I see Sharpton making tackles in the pictures of the 8/6 morning practice posted by BullPen, and Sharpton's name is no longer listed on the injury report.

Please I beg you, stop calling out anymore players to have a breakout season, pretty soon nobody will be left.

Back to Dobbins, who I have no doubt will make the Texans 53 man roster. He is a Wade Phillips, 3-4 ILB with five years NFL experience from 2006 draft class (notice any trends here?). He should take some pressure off Cushing & DeMeco. Means Bentley is gone for sure don't know about Adibi but he seems more of a 4-3 WLB like Diles who is also gone. Tim should really help plug up the middle & shutdown the run, although he can flash some inside rush. Temperament along lines of Watt & Brooks good motor/work ethic & very productive. Very good, under rated signing getting the BL seal of approval :wesmantexanfan:

Hopefully, your description is accurate. But I would still have liked to have seen more than 1 sack in 2009 and 1 sack in 2010........2 sacks in a 5 year period, from an ILB.

Sometimes you just have to go on a leap of faith. I wish to have more resources & time to study film, ala 76Texan. I must admit sometimes make trigger responses based off small sample sizes of game film, but generally its not rocket science, unlike your vast knowledge of the medical field. I'm just reaffirming this may seem like incidental signing for depth purposes but this kid can play, knows Wades system, is a baller & will be a valued member of the team moving forward, just kinda big news for us homers :homer:
