New Orleans native Jacoby Jones of Houston Texans keeps busy during NFL lockout

Houston Texans wide receiver Jacoby Jones has developed a reputation as a standout kick returner in the NFL, compiling 1,762 return yards the past two seasons.

A 6-foot-2, 210-pound New Orleans native and product of Abramson, Jones has accounted for 10 total touchdowns and 1,762 return yards in the past two seasons for Houston.

Tonight, Jones will host a celebrity basketball game at Xavier. The guest list includes some of Jones' NFL friends, including Texans teammate and All-Pro receiver Andre Johnson, retired NBA player Darius Miles and New Orleans Saints receiver Robert Meachem.

On Saturday, Jones is putting on his fourth annual free football camp at Pontchartrain Park for underprivileged youth, complete with instruction from several of Jones' professional peers such as Johnson, new Saints running back Mark Ingram, Cardinals defensive back Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Meachem.

Jones said the connection he feels with his hometown inspired him to bring something back to the community.

"This is where I was raised, you know? I remember running around as a ball boy at the Xavier gym while my mom worked there," he said. "(New Orleans) is my town, and (the camp) is something I thought could be a fun time for the kids."

While at Abramson, Jones also was a standout track and field athlete and played basketball.

He credited playing different sports for his quick reflexes in the return game.

"Obviously, basketball really helped with stuff like agility and footwork, and even good hands," he said. "Running track was all about developing my speed, but playing both all tied into one for me."

Jones went to Southeastern Louisiana in 2002 on a track scholarship before transferring to Lane College the next year.

After a solid senior season at Lane, Jones had a breakout game in the 2007 East-West Shrine Game and began to appear on many team's draft boards before being taken with the 73rd pick overall, in the third round, by the Texans.

Jones said his time at a small school left him more motivated.

"I never saw being (at Lane) was a disadvantage, and it just made me more hungry," he said.

Jones, a free agent, has a lot at stake in the outcome of the NFL labor negotiations. With a lockout in place, teams are prevented from signing players.

"I would love to go back to Houston," he said. "I really like the organization ... but I also definitely understand that this is a business, too."

Jones said this weekend's events give him something to do during the lockout.

"I'm just kind of bored, honestly," Jones said with a laugh. "I told my trainers that it feels like I'm getting ready for the combine because I've been working out so long now."

After last year, I find it difficult seeing JJ as a "standout kick returner." Nor would I classify him in a self-assessed "good hands" category. He has the potential for both. But to date, big question marks still remain.

This is such a stock response to the question about playing for the team one was under contract with before becoming a FA. Don't you just wish a player who's a prospective FA would one time say something like "I'm going to play, going to sign with whoever offers me the most money, the most lucrative contract. Period ? "

I would love to play for the Houston Texans................as long as they give me the most money, the most lucrative contract..........and a brand new pair of suction cup gloves for hanging on to the ball..........and climbing out of the dog house.

I bet he gets resigned. Bad hands in the NFL is probably good hands in a park somewhere playing with friends....but it's still bad hands in the NFL. Dude is clumsy with the ball but electric in space. Most aggravating combo ever? Probably.
