FS and SS

If the Texans were to get a FS and a SS from the Draft, who would you want?

SS
DeAndre McDaniel - Clemson

would yall mind getting Aaron Williams in the 2nd and play him as a FS?

If we go FS then I want Rahim Moore, Quentin Carter, or Deunta Williams but it looks like the Texans might be moving Glover Quin to FS thus making it not so high of a priority. I'm thinking we go SS instead and I'd like Deandre McDaniel in the 2nd round or Tyler Sash, or possibly Joe Lefeged in the 4th round. Also I think Jaiquawn Jarrett gets moved to SS.

quinton carter!!!

he can most likely play both safety positions in wades defence.
wade looks for more cover safeties and focuses less on run support....another reason why pollard got released.

however carter can also make the big hit and tackle.
seen as he can play both positions, it would be great if we could sign a SS in the eventual FA and have carter backing up both the new FA and Quinn.
and we would straight away turn a terrible safety position into pretty good depth (also add in troy nolan as a back up)

I want rasi dowling as a free safety. If they want turnovers they need someone with ball skills on the back end.

1. cb amukamara
2. fs dowling
3.
4.
4. ss sash

Chris Culliver is on my mock for Houston in 4th round. He played FS for 3 seasons before moving to corner last year. 4.36 first try & 4.38 last 40. Skills, hip rotation and foot movement excellent. I think Texans will move Quin to FS under Phillips and get a Vet CB in free agency so FS is not high on my board any longer. SS: will be Nolan but I have Chris Prosinki in 7th and he is a tackling machine. Listed as a FS he has body for SS.

I'm still not convinced we are going to take our best CB and move him to safety. Even if we bring in a solid vet, that leaves us with 1 decent CB.

I like Rahim Moore in the 2nd as more of a pure FS but that would mean Quin needs to stay at CB. I kind of like Quinton Carter for the Texans because from what I've read he's more physical than Moore and tackles better. I think it's possible that Quin and Carter could both be Wade's Safeties at the same time... Quin would be a FS that's obviously able to move up to the line of scrimmage and cover the WR... which I love in a Safety.

I think Carter (or Moore) would be a good 2nd round pick if we go OLB in the first. If we don't go OLB in the first, I think some good ones could be available at our 2nd rounder and should be considered over safety.

I'd have no problem with Kareem Jackson as our #2 CB if Quin is covering over the top and we've got a veteran CB (a true #1) on the opposite side of the field.

But I will say, a Veteran CB + Quin + Jackson is a better CB grouping.

I'd like for the Texans to sign a vet FS as well as a vet CB.
If they can sign a good FA FS, I think Wade might even bring Reeves back at CB (if they can't find anything better - don't know if Wade like Allen???)
In the draft, they still need to sign at least one safety and a CB.
This is the one year the Texans can "afford" to contrate on defense in the draft (yet again)!
OLB, FS, CB, SS, WR/KR

Anybody wants either Allen or Reeves back?

I know Reeves wasn't the best but I wouldn't have released him. Something must have gone on behind closed doors because didn't he have some negative tweets out there or something? Has he been picked up by anyone or has he been a free agent for the last year?

I liked the pick up of Jason Allen, I would definitely hang on to him. That is assuming he fits the x's and o's that Wade will draw up back there.

This is what I found:

The NFL's waiver wire process applies to players who have less than four seasons of league experience and are released from any of the league's 32 teams. Once a player with less than four seasons of league experience is cut or released from a team, the other 31 teams are given the chance to claim the player from the waiver wire. A team that claims a player from the waiver wire assumes the terms of the original contract agreed upon between the player and the team that released him.

Allen signed a 6-yr rookie contract with the Dolphins in 2006.
He still has one year remaining on that contract term, if all is true.

Exactly. As much as I disliked KJ's play he seldom had a FS near him. Also, let's not forget Sherrick McMannis who is exactly what we need as a cover corner type with size and speed. He should get more reps this year under Wade and we might have a better teacher for our Dbacks.

I really like to see McMannis get some FS looks. like his range, ball skills & longer wingspan than Quin for position, if Glover is our best CB why move him?

My POV: Quin was rated #7 FS during his draft; McMannis however is a true cover corner that does not come along often. I've researched him after last draft as I did not know much about him. He can be the real deal with good coaching. I rather use KJ for a FS than McMannis.

he struggled worse than Kareem when posted on the corner. I'm sure 76Texan will post his film review for us, but is a zone corner if nothing else. Also think he looked strong in run support, good tackler in open field, don't think he has the explosion or burst to hang with elite WR's by himself.

I saw what you did but McMannis looked lost & I saw that as a coaching issue. Remember where he was drafted when evaluating him. I lke his style CB rather than bump and run that KJ brings.

I'm with you on this one. I suggested it a few weeks back. McMannis really has the look and the tools of a rangy FS.

CB #1 - nobody
CB #2 - Quin
CB #3 - Jackson
CB #4 - Allen
FS - McMannis
SS - nobody

Fill out those two gaps and I'm a lot more optimistic about next season.

bah,

You don't think Nolan will be any better as a 2nd yr player?

I'd like to see McMannis see the field as well. They must have seen something there to draft him?

I'd like to see our "steal" seventh rounder on the field too. I'd love to see him shine in PS.

I like Nolan. I think he is solid depth. But I don't think he is a long term solution.

I know you were high on McCain last year...what do you think his prospects are in the upcoming season?

Move Quinn and draft Lefeged,

That solves the S position and gives Phillips 2 coverage S that fit his scheme.

Sands also would be a good pick. He's pretty good in coverage and is a very hard hitter.

secondary just lost more leadership/experience (Pollard & Wilson) so I guess we better believe Gary when he say's they're going young.

Do you guys think that Robert Sands is too tall to be an effective safety? He is listed as 6'5" 220-lbs and he can sure as hell knock the crap outta' people, but would he be a liability in pass coverage?

I think he is just what you want in a SS. Hits hard, makes tackles, and has decent coverage ability.

I'm not expecting us to have two center fielders back there. If we got Sands and matched him up with a good cover guy at FS we would be set I think.

Oh boy

Just cant wait to see more of the same from Jackson and McCain.

3rd and 8, Manning drops to pass, pass is complete to Wayne for a Colts 1st down. I've heard this story before.

unless the blitz package gets to him first?

Wade will impact the front seven for sure, they will add weapon(s) to use & implement for a more effective pass rush which will leave seconday less exposed. Big FA splash will be at least one or the other (FS/SS) with a mid tier veteren CB thrown in the mix. the coverage will change completley at least far as scheme going to more zone & less press with more safety help deep & less creaping too close to scrimmage.

and if the scouts are right about this draft the Texans won't finding a great safety this year either.

True

This is why Quin needs to move to FS. If they add a CB in FA that would really be a big help.

There should be a good S available in the 3rd rd. Lefeged is a fast playmaking S. Sash is a smart football player who should also be available. Both of these guys would be huge upgrades.

Just because there isn't a Polamalu or Reed in this draft. Doesn't mean that the Texans cant draft a S in rd 3-4. That wouldn't be a huge upgrade over the crap that was at the S position for the Texans last yr.

I want more speed at the S position. The lack of speed there made a young group of CB's look pitiful. Example the long pass against the Jets. Yes, Allen played the wrong technique but Wilson didn't have enough speed to make for Allen's mistake.

I've heard there is a chance he could start, so don't be too surprised (source was barry on 610).

Barry Warner just lost a lot of credibility with me then. McCain looked like a nice diamond in the rough his rookie year with the chance to be a quality nickleback.

Last year he was downright miserable. 1 game in particular (Charger's maybe?) his highlights deserved a Benny Hill theme song. It may be a technique issue (i hope). If Brice McCain is a starter for this team our defense will be worse then last year.

As far as the safety position goes i think i have Rick Smith's formula figured out for filling needs on this team :

1 bad starter
vs
1 late draft pick
vs
1 noname free agent

= opening day starter (1 of the 3 is bound to have a decent season right? this way we don't have to pay him squat and i get credit as a gm capable of finding something outta nothing!)

I was very down on McCain last year...

That said, I honestly believe that our defensive personnel wasn't as bad as the coaching made it look....

I don't like the fact that McCain seems to get man handled when he's around the ball, but to me that is something that can be fixed...He has very good speed and he seems to not get lost when in man coverage...His zone coverage needs work, but that can be said for pretty much anyone that played zone covg last year...

I dunno if I would pencil McCain in as the starter just yet, but I do expect him to make a noticeable improvement (if he has time to work with the coaching staff)....

I've been saying that we've got to be careful that we don't go extremely young again in the secondary.

I'm on the fence when it comes to Quin. I'm fine with

1. keeping Quin & KJ as CBs, bringing in one FA safety, and then either drafting a safety or bringing in another FA safety.

I think that a lot of what looked bad from GQ and KJ was just a lack of support over the top combined with youth. If we get a good vet safety to provide leadership and then another athletic safety, we could fix the secondary issues. ESPECIALLY if we improve our pass rush.

2. moving Quin to FS, keep KJ at CB, bring in a FA CB, and then draft a SS.

I think Quin could be really good at FS. KJ will look better with more experience and if he gets proper support from his safeties. A FA CB could help steady the whole crew. And a young talented safety would be able to provide better support than Pollard and Wilson could.

I don't like the idea of trying to draft a CB AND two safeties (or two CBs and one safety and move Quin to FS) to try to fix the problem. Sure, we might get a lot more talented on the backend but there's just not enough experience if we do that. And if we do that, we probably haven't fixed our front 7 and that means that the inexperienced crew will have to cover for too long.

If I were the Texans I would not bring in a middle of the road type free agent to be a starter in the defensive backfield.

We're probably going to have to overpay, and middle of the road guys can go either way...could be a waste of money or money well spent. If I were going to go after a free agent DB for this team I'd go for a stud or the closest thing to a stud I could find. They need to get as close to a sure thing as they can find.

An Anthony Weaver type of "upgrade" will be disappointing.

:goodpost:
I've been more on the "bring in veteran CB" bandwagon, regardless of what we do with Quin. But I've been thinking more and more about the Safeties because I totally agree that they were the main culprits last season with our secondary woes.

Option 1 - Keep Quin and Jackson as starting CBs. I'd like to re-sign Jason Allen. Going this route, I could see a veteran S pick up. I believe Gerald Sensabaugh and Alan Ball (both from the Cowboys) are free agents. Don't know much about them but newly hired HC/DCs like guys they're familiar with. Sign one and draft a safety like Rahim Moore, Quinton Carter, etc. A guy like Eric Weddle would be amazing.

Option 2 - Draft a 2nd/3rd rd type of safety: Quinton Carter, Tyler Sash, etc. (Moore is too much of a pure FS to me, may not work with Quin at FS?) Sign a veteran CB like Ike Taylor or (gulp) Nnamdi Asomugha.

Maybe its blind faith, but I do think we'll see progress in Kareem's play next season. It will really show when there is safety help over the top via Quin or FA.

That "fixes" our secondary issues. In addressing the Front 7 - I think most everyone feels like the 11th overall pick will be on a front 7 guy.

1) OLB Aldon Smith 2) S Quinton Carter 3) DE/DT Jarvis Jenkins

Sign a veteran S and keep Quin at CB or sign a veteran CB and move Quin to FS.

This

1. Quin is an average to below avg CB. He could be an above avg FS.

2. FA CB's like Taylor or to a lesser extent Josh Wilson or after he's cut Nate Clements to give the Texans some leadership on the backend.

I agree.

Obviously, the perfect situation would be to get Nnamdi Asomugha. But he's going to have a lot of suitors.

Johnathon Joseph from the Bengals will probably be franchised.

The guys that we possibly have a realistic shot at that would satisfy our requirements are Ike Taylor and Chris Carr. Maybe Josh Wilson or Carlos Rogers. I doubt we'd go after Cromartie and I think he's over-rated... but he'd be a serious upgrade.

After that, it starts to get questionable. Maybe Eric Wright just needs a change of scenery. Maybe Fabian Washington can stay healthy.

So... the pickings are slim and we're going to have to be aggressive and probably over-pay for someone (unless someone REALLY wants to play for Wade). Too bad there won't be a CBA in place before the draft. Our best shot might be bundling up some picks and a couple of players and getting a CB via trade.

The Texans are in a bad spot. If the draft happens before FA. Texans luck as usual. If they have to draft a CB my late 1st early 2nd rd choices would be A.Williams or D.House. If they have to go this route a trade up in the 3rd rd would be what I would do. So a a competent FS could be drafted.

What do people think of the Free Safeties and Strong Safeties that are (will be) available in Free Agency?

Michael Huff?
Gerald Sensabaugh?

What's everyone's opinion on these two?

Meh. The Raiders are my other team, Huff is OK. Nothing special. I wouldnt be upset if we got him for a reasonable contract. I'd prefer to go after Weddle myself

Huff actually had a really good year last year. I think he's finally gotten it and I honestly wouldn't mind getting him.

Sensabaugh would be an upgrade. He knows Wade and Wade knows him. I actually consider this guy a very good possiblity for coming here. And I'd like him here if we can't get anyone better.

Of course, the ultimate guy to get is Weddle. But I would be totally stoked if we got Landry, Manning, or Mikell. All of these guys are better than Sensabaugh.

Bush wanted a full defensive playbook last year; therefore, our CBs had seen time at safeties.

Whether in cover 3, cover 4 (be it a straight cover 4, or cover 2 on one side of the field and cover 4 on the other side), or a rotation wherein the safety steps up while one of the CBs drops back.

Quin won't be a total stranger to the positon in this regard.
However, I really like the rapport Quin & Jackson were building playing next to one another.
I would hate to see us losing that.

Next to each other? You mean when they were on the same side and Quin was playing nickel or do you mean when they were both playing CB? I mean, I'm interpreting this as you saying you prefer both of them playing CB together but I could be wrong about that.

How would you feel about keeping Quin and KJ as our starting CBs and getting a vet S and drafting a young S? Or getting two vet Ss?

It's like in basketball when you need to switch man; Quin and Jackson were getting comfortable with each other.
They can still work on it, but it looks like the chemistry was there; I would hate to break that up.
We still have Allen for another year, so if they don't move Quin to safety, it would make sense for them to keep doing what they were doing toward the end of the year.
Keep Quin at nickel, but also play him at CB, giving Allen and Jackson a breather from time to time.
All these guys will have one more year in the league and the experience they gained should help them next year.
Draft another CB and work to develop him along with McManis.

Find a veteran FS (this way you only have to zero in on one FA and can afford to pony up the money.)
Draft at least another safety; but since you don't know how the FA situation will work out, might as well draft two safeties.

Personally, I would try to trade down into the 20s to draft the big CB Jimmy Smith; take McDaniels (Clemson) who can play both safety spot in the 2nd; then find another guy to develop in the late round.

I will get to why I don't think the Texans will draft an OLB in the first two rounds.

I don't know if the Texans will or will not draft an OLB in the 1st 2 rounds. But I do know that it would be insanely stupid if they didn't.

Johnathon Joseph from the Bengals will probably be franchised.
Didn't the Bengals already pass on franchising Joseph?

In their latest attempt to prove they are the most inept franchise in the NFL, the Cincinnati Bengals have decided to not use the franchise tag on free-agent-to-be cornerback Johnathan Joseph.

While good franchises around the league – such as the Eagles, Jets and Patriots – have decided to tag their key free agents, the Bengals are content to sit idly by and allow one of the best corners in the league to become an unrestricted free agent.
If the league somehow winds up playing 2011 under the 2010 rules, then Joseph is still a RFA and would cost a 1st & 3rd as compensation. If Joseph becomes an UFA, then he will get slightly less than Nnamdi money.

Yep

But if they traded down to say Balt in the late 20's. They would get an extra 3rd and 5th like they did in the Flacco trade. This would give them the ammunition to trade back up into the bottom of the 2nd and get an OLB and they would get good value in the bottom of the 2nd rd.

I'm going to blog about this on DM and Barrett's blog sometime this week.
