Texans Interested in Phillip Hunt

Ah, Football!
I watched him a few times when he was with UH. Sounds like he's been kickin booty in the CFL.

The Texans have joined the Vikings in showing interest in CFL pass rusher Phillip Hunt.
The window to sign CFL players ends on February 15. Hunt, 23, looks the part of a 3-4 OLB like the Texans need at 6'2/260. He also is a Houston native, having played college ball for the Cougars. As a member of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers this past season, Hunt led the Canadian League with 16 sacks.

Yeah, he was a decent LB considering how poor UH's defense was. I wasn't certain where he'd get drafted, if at all, but thought he'd at least be a nice UDFA for someone. Maybe he elected to go to the CFL?

16 sacks in a season's pretty good even for the CFL.
 
i can tell you that here in winnipeg. we love the guy!!!! but id rather see him in a texans uni then a blue and gold one
 
It's worth a shot. Sometimes good players slip under the radar (Tramon Williams, anyone?). I can't imagine he would be very expensive to bring in.

Plus he's from H-town. I remember seeing a bunch of his family and friends at the Shrine Game that year, which was in Houston. So, I'd reckon we'd have the upperhand vs the Vikes.

There were many including myself that wanted the Texans to draft Hunt.

But because of having to draft between 2-4 TE's every yr there wasn't enough picks to take Hunt. So now if Gary and Rick want Hunt they're going to have to overpay.

I still don't think he'll be that expensive, relatively speaking. I'd like to think we have a huge edge in signing him due to the Houston connection and all. Plus, if we get him, this clears up the draft for us to select a couple more TEs...
 
I believe he was in the Browns TC and then bounced around a few teams.

I like him, but I think he's strictly a edge rushing DE or OLB, which is fine in this scheme.
He's not quite strong enough to play DE in the NFL.
And I also think he lacks the fluidity to drop back into coverage.
(But heck, he can't do worse than most of our LBs, lol).

What about the other 31 teams? I guess they're just as stupid, huh. Dumb comment just to fit in a Gary/Rick jab.

Take your Texans FO jabs to one of the many threads on this board. Can we try to keep this one football related by discussing the player's potential with the Texans? I know it might be tough for you to do, but try. Not many of us like things the FO have done, but we don't make it a priority to involve a FO comment in practically every post.

That's funny.

I suspect Smithiak is scouring the college ranks, as we speak, looking for the TE's who show the best acumen and ability at rushing the passer.

Texans Rumors: Texans Interested In Ex-Cougar, CFL Star Hunt

Feb 8, 2011 - FoxSports.com's Adam Caplan is reporting that the Texans have thrown their hat into the chase for ex-UH defensive end Phillip Hunt. The team brought him in for a workout on December 28th, probably with visions that he had a chance to become their own version of Cameron Wake.

Hunt, who posted 19 sacks over the past two seasons with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, went unselected in the 2009 NFL Draft. He signed with the Browns a few days after the draft but was waived during the preseason. He signed with the Blue Bombers in September of that year. He was the CFL's top pass rusher this past season with 16 sacks.

The Texans are shifting to a 3-4 defensive scheme this coming season. While Hunt played with his hand down in Winnipeg's 4-3 defensive scheme, he did have limited experience in the 3-4 during his time with the Browns.

A pro personnel source told FOXSports.com that Hunt would fit in as a situational pass rusher in the NFL for about 10-20 plays per game.

It would certainly be an interesting fit for the Texans, who would probably wind up using him as an outside linebacker in Wade Phillips' new 3-4 scheme. If Hunt is anywhere near Wake's prowess in the Texans' eyes, the team could possibly sign him and let he and Connor Barwin duke it out for the spot as a premiere pass-rushing end. Even if the team sees him as more of a situational rusher, that could still be pretty handy for a team that is transitioning from a 4-3 to a 3-4 and might not have the right players for the scheme at every spot.

12/20/10 - LB Phillip Hunt had a tryout with the Patriots on Monday. He worked out for Cleveland and Philadelphia last week.

12/16/10 - LB Phillip Hunt, who was released by Tampa Bay in August, had a tryout with the Eagles and Browns this week.

12/15/10 - LB Phillip Hunt, who was released by Tampa Bay in August, had a tryout with the Eagles.

08/18/09 - LB Phillip Hunt was waived by the Browns.

I was just trying to point out that now the Texans are going to have to over pay. I didn't mean that as a jab at the Texans FO.

If I wanted to take a jab at the FO. There are many other instances I would have used instead of a CFL star/UDFA.

Why would they have to overpay for someone who hasn't made it out of the CFL and would likely love to play for his hometown?

A CFL sacking machine is going to cost more than a 7th rd pick would. See Dolphins Cameron Wake.

Also dont read too much into the Hunt wants to come home story. Hunt like 99% of the players out there will go to whatever team offers him the most $$$$.
 
We need guys who are gameday-ready.

This guy, IMO, would be better than rolling the dice on a similar position with our #11 pick. Rick Smith, Gary Kubiak, and Bob McNair went on record a year ago saying they were going to try and catch players on their way up instead of guys at the end of their careers (which is probably why he didn't overpay for Schobel, just a hunch).

If that's the case, then this guy should come aboard. We need to work free agency a little more diligently (on defense) this year and go BPA with pick 11 in the draft.

I don't have any desire for us to take anything other than the BEST overall player at pick 11 despite what position he might play. Drafting for need can make you pass up a guy at other positions; a guy who might become your starter for any number of reasons (injury to incumbent starter, poor play by the incumbent starter, contract problems, etc.).

Wonder if we can find some Blue Bomber footage of him anywhere???

Well I guess it comes down to what is overpaying then. Wake is on a dirt cheap (4 year, up to $2.3 mil) incentive heavy contract. To have drafted him and kept him since the 2005 draft even at vet minimum you would have paid out more money.

I didn't look at it that way. But you're right.

It would've been nice to have Hunt here learning the Texans system. But Bush system probably wouldn't have been a fit for Hunt anyways.

He's from Houston, he's young, he's productive in the CFL, he's got the size for the position, I assume he's healthy or we wouldn't be interested in him. As long as he signs for a reasonable contract with incentive bonuses based on production, then get the job done. Rick what are you waiting for? He sounds like he'd be a good insurance policy against the possibility of not getting anyone great at OLB in the draft or FA. What are you waiting for?

I'm betting he's waiting on the new CBA since you can't sign free agents until it's finalized. Just a hunch.

We can't sign NFL FA's until the CBA is done, apparently we can sign all the CFL guys we want, therefore Mr. Phil Mike Hunt is our #1 priority signing at the moment and we must get him so help me God.

Phillip Hunt is currently working out with his fifth NFL team (the Minnesota Vikings) but the CFL sackmaster has by no means forgetten about the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

“The Bombers are a great safety net,” Hunt said.

Essentially what he means is he’s happy to come back to Winnipeg if he can’t get a signing bonus from an NFL team (he has also worked out with Cleveland, Philadelphia, Houston and New England).

“I want a signing bonus worth enough that me and my family could live off it for the season just in case the NFL goes into a lockout or if things don’t pan out and I come back to the CFL during the season.”

The way Hunt played last season, you have to think Bomber fans hope nobody shows him the money.

Being a safety net sounds pretty good right about now.

It is all about the money and the NFL has lots of money to offer to its players. In the 2009 season of the NFL, the average yearly salary for a NFL player is around $770,000 USD. In comparison to the CFL, the average salary for a CFL player in 2009 is approximately $50,000 CAN. Often players from the CFL will need to find second jobs in the off season to supplement their income from playing football. The highest paid player in the NFL is making over 10-15 million dollars per season such as the likes of Peyton Manning, Carson Palmer, and Ben Roethlisberger. The highest paid player in the CFL is could be making over $150,000. Wow quite the big discrepancy in salaries between the NFL vs CFL players.

Sometimes players will quit their respective CFL teams and try out to play in the NFL because of the money and fame that the NFL offers their players.

The Texans trying to sign Hunt has nothing to do with Aso whatsoever. Do you think that if they sign Hunt that Scrabble will refuse to come here or something? Do you think that Smith is going to say, "Hey Gary, just signed some kid out of the CFL. Alright, I'm done for the year. See you next offseason." One has nothing at all to do with the other.
 
I say we take the risk and sign Hunt to a reasonable contract. I don't know how competitive CFL is but hey, football is football and if he has the skills we're needing at OLB then let's get him.

As previously first reported by FOXSports.com, two teams, the Houston Texans and Minnesota Vikings have shown interest in signing Canadian Football League DE Phillip Hunt. Two sources said another team, the Philadelphia Eagles, have shown interest in Hunt.

Hunt ,25, worked out for the Texans on Dec. 28, Cleveland Browns (Dec. 16), Vikings (Dec. 18), New England Patriots (Dec. 20) and Eagles (Dec. 14).

The window to sign CFL players expires on Feb. 15. The CFL free agency period starts the next day. Hunt’s option on his contract picks up on Feb. 15, so he must sign with an NFL team by that date or he’ll be back in the CFL for another season.

Hunt (6-1, 248), who posted 19 sacks over the past two seasons with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, went unselected in the 2009 NFL Draft. Two out of the Vikings top-three pass rushers, Ray Edwards and Brian Robison, are unsigned for next season.

The Eagles seemingly have pretty good depth at defensive end with Trent Cole, Juqua Parker, Darryl Tapp and Brandon Graham. However, Parker turns 33 in May, Cole turns 29 in October and Graham is coming off of ACL surgery.

The defensive lineman out of the University of Houston is the latest sack artist to come out of the league north of the border.

Miami Dolphins second-year OLB Cameron Wake was a former two-time CFL player of the year. He finished third in the NFL during the 2010 season with 14 sacks and was selected to the Pro Bowl.

A pro personnel source said Hunt is not nearly advanced as Wake is as a pass rusher, but he should be able to handle at least 10 plays per game next season at the NFL level.

This is the hard part of the year.

Texans fans wondering multiple things:

1. Is the guy really a good player?

2. Is the guy asking too much?

3. Is our team interested and refusing to act due to money issues?

4. Has our team decided he's not worth it, no matter the price he's asking?

5. Does the team's coaches feel we can do better elsewhere, via keeping what we have and/or going after other guys not yet on the market?

6. Are they making a mistake by not acquiring a guy who is good at rushing the passer, a much-needed trait on this defense?

7. The labor issues: Is this going to make teams less likely to add players right now? I think it has the potential to grind to a halt any day now, and am frankly curious as to why any teams are doing any speculative negotiations on free agents right now.

On and on and on.....

We sit here and think we might be missing out on a great thing, but are we?

This is a hard time of year. We want improvement so badly, that any decent looking player becomes a type of mirage in the desert to us. Then we don't move on the guy, and anxiousness sets in.

McNair has stated we're only looking at free agents who are on their way UP and not at the end of their careers. This guy is 25 and had a great season, so he's got some momentum going on. If the Eagles are looking at him, then that tells me more than if the Redksins are--Two teams who have different results on what they acquire and what those players do once they get to their respective teams. I know that seems like an elementary way of looking at it, but hey...it's part of the overall equation.

My fear is that we won't make the play on the guy because the Eagles would outbid us. We couldn't beat out the Bengals for Cedric (Kubiak, IIRC, said it came down to (a) more money, and (b) promise of more touches with Cincy). We couldn't snag Bodden (and I don't care about his injury in 2010...there's no way he would have been fated to have the same injury here in Houston). I think, unfortunately, we've become the team that has migrated away from giving out paydays and has conversely begun to rely upon players looking to play at OUR PRICE and be happy with just having the opportunity.

This CBA thing is tricky. I would have re-worked Arian Foster's deal to make it line up a bit better, regardless of how taboo it is to re-work a deal when you could milk the current deal for all its worth. But nothing appears on the horizon for Arian, who has earned a new deal IMO, and I wonder if the CBA is holding it up (most likely) and even if Bob would re-work it even if the labor issues were non-existent this year.

Lots of pondering.
