Texans history of 2nd thru 7th round picks

Since I have been following the Texans a little over 2 years now, I have noticed that we dont have any original Texans even though we are still (at least playing like one) expansion team.
What have been our successful draft picks that were not in the first round. I know Demeco was one and OD. I also want to ask who was responsible for drafting them?
Just seems to me that for a team that wants to build through the draft, we completly suck at it.
Also, who is responsible for drafting the players? The HC, GM, Owner?

It seems to me the GM is usually extremely involved in the decision making process. I think it's important to note that Rick Smith has been the GM during all 5 seasons Kubiak has been here. Casserly was still titled the GM during the 2006 but was fired after, with Smith being brought in before the season started.

The 2006, by far our greatest one, is a source of many questions. Who drafted who? Who was responsible? Casserly was the GM but everyone knew he was getting fired - how much say did he have in everything? How much is Kubiak involved? etc etc.

These are the guys I think are worth noting. Some are starters, some are getting playing time. Not all are all-stars, but when you're talking about 2nd/3rd day draft picks I think they're "good" picks, to this day. Too early to tell about 2010 draft: Tate has been on IR, Earl Mitchell/Daryl Sharpton has played some, Dickerson a little... not enough info though.

All in all, I've been mildly pleased about our drafts. A lot of people will slam Rick Smith over them but I won't. Maybe I'm still more excited about some of the potential in our guys. But the thing is, there aren't that many other teams that scream GREAT drafting during the 2nd - 7th rounds. It's easy to look at us and say "this guy sucks, that guy sucks..." but go look at every other teams' draft and you'll say the exact same thing.

I was thinking a little about this the other day and realized we had 0 second round picks playing for us most of this season.

2008 - traded for Schaub
2007 - traded for Schaub
2006 - Demeco Ryans
2005 - Vernand Morency
2004 - trade for Jason Babin
2003 - Ben Joppru
2002 - Jabar Gaffney

If I'm not mistaken Casserly provided a bulk of the information on prospects...

I don't see how much input Kubiak could have had since he had not yet hired a scouting department or a GM....

A majority of his resources had to have come from what was already in place...

You said yourself that the 2006 draft was the best one, and he took no part in that...

The other drafts have been less than spectacular...

He hasn't produced one player that I would call a perennial stud...And he hasn't produced many quality starters if any????

I'm not sure how you can say that his drafts have been good....They haven't been...

Now I don't know how much that is on Kubiak, but it doesn't even matter...Smith has not done a really job overall...That is not even a question in my mind...

Now I won't say that he's been extremely poor, but he hasn't done anything to write home about...

I don't disagree. The scouting department had much to do with it, as usual. I remember when Smith came in he changed a lot of how the personnel scouting (pro and college) meshed together. I don't think Kubiak/Smith dumped many of the scouts we had from 2006 - I never read about any this.

I just wonder how much say Casserly had in all of it since he was exiting anyways. Not saying he didn't do anything, I think he was actually involved quite a bit. Just a very interesting time in our history.

They were talking about the drafts on 1560 the other day. They have 4 starters total for their 4-5 years of drafts. That is pretty bad. People can say guys have potential but most of the guys have been non factors.

to the bolded: Where did this come from - thin air? A one-time snapshot at Week 16?? MAYBE if you fault them for injuries but that doesn't seem right. On Defense? Mario Williams, Amobi Okoye, Brian Cushing, Demeco Ryans, Zac Diles, Glover Quin, Kareem Jackson. There's 7 on Defense right there. You can argue whether Okoye, Diles and Jackson should be starting or not. Take out Demeco b/c he's injured but that's not fair IMO. Eric Winston, Duane Brown, Owen Daniels, Antoine Caldwell is now starting.. They traded draft picks for Matt Schaub, Kevin Walter and Chris Myers who are starting. Jacoby Jones is getting decent playing time.

I mean I don't want to sound like I'm saying Rick Smith is the greatest EVAARR, but this 4 starters business is ludicrous. I think there's a lot for us to improve on and I expect us to. If we don't that's completely unaccceptable. I'm sorry if you disagree with me, I'm sure most of you will. I'm just calling it like I see it. I'm not happy with the current state of the Texans, this is downright embarrassing.

It's an interesting exerice though to go look at all the other teams drafts since 2006. There's some good ones in there but there's also about 20 or more that are worse than ours. I'm not saying that's where I want to be, I'm just trying to pull some unemotional opinion into this conversation. In order for us to be one of the best teams in the league... we HAVE to do better than we have. That I can agree with.

I've heard the opposite.

Kubiak makes final decision.

During the year and with FAs, Smith has more say, since Kubiak is busy with week to week duties.

But for every single player acquisition, be it draft or FA or trade, Kubiak has final say.

This conversation was a week or 2 ago and they went through each player and rated his impact and where he was realistically. Sobering if you actually go through and look at it. I mean DeMeco is hurt but was he a big factor this year before that...not really. Same with Mario. Now that is this year but you have to look at development and alot of the guys that were supposed to contribute aren't, injuries or not..i.e. Barwin.

Mario, Demeco, OD, Demeco, and Winston don't count as Smith picks

So that's minus 5 right there...
