The difference between 2009 Cushing and 2010 Cushing

How 'bout that mega run around MJD gave to Cush? Did those announcers gush or what?

Here's the difference:

Last year Brian Cushing would've came running full steam like a freight train from hell to blow MJD's face off for a 2 yard loss.

This year Brian Cushing came to a complete stop before attempting a tackle, danced a jig with MMFJD, barely got an arm tackle attempt in before someone else made the play for a MJD positive gain and man love.

Where has all the rage gone?

Into a cup labeled positive.

Do you think this is an overtraining thing, or fear of big fines?

A lot of players are pulling up in games this year..... Afraid of Goddell.

The lack of "tackling fuel".

Cushing has got the "..meh.." virus that's infecting the team.

There's the "old" Thorn. Good to see the Sarge back! He looks like he's missed being around.

RE Cush. He should be getting back in playing shape. We'll see.

Hold your tongue? Why? Don't want to hurt Frank Cushing's feelings?

IT IS CLEAR TO ME THAT WHATEVER BRIAN CUSHING IS GUILTY OF DOING, WHATEVER HE SERVED A SUSPENSION FOR HAS HAD A SEVERE IMPACT ON HIS ABILITY TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN A FOOTBALL GAME

2009-4 sacks, 4 Ints, 10 passes deflected, 2 forced fumbles, 86 tackles/47 assists, 1 safety, 1 positive test

2010-0 sacks, 0 Ints, 2 passes deflected, 0 forced fumbles, 24 tackles/12 assists, 1 4 game suspension

Even if you have the time to extrapolate these numbers over 12 games (or you know...16 games because that's how long a season is for non-abusers) they are pretty....Morlon Greenwood-ish.

I guess you forgot about the 2008 DeMeco Ryans? Players can have a down year. Why don't you let his post-suspension career play out for more than 5 games before passing judgement that he won't ever be the player he used to be.

Not saying you may not be right in the long run, but 5 games? On a defense THIS bad?

I doubt he was as squeeky clean as most Texans fans believed when he was suspended. Most of the "he's obviously innocent and the test is flawed" bullcrap flowed from the bull on his helmet, nothing more.

Add the fact that he is playing with a group of demoralized players, and that might effect the effort he is putting out too. I'll say it again: The players aren't dumb. They know as well as any fan that they are playing in a lousy system with little hope for improvement driven by the current leadership.

Cushing didn't test positive for steroids, and assuming that the HCG he did test positive for was a part of a steroid cycle, it is a part of the end of the cycle. Even in a scenario where he was using steroids, he wasn't using them at any point in the season last year.

So, I don't see how it makes sense to be blaming his play on a "lack of 'roid rage" or whatever the consensus seems to be.

He looked like he was getting his pep back in his step this past game but i do believe that he is another 1 of our good players who's play appears to have slipped largely b/c of all the turds around them. Last year was last year & teams usually adjusts for good/great players. You see Chris Johnson coming anywhere near 2000 yds this season? how about Jared Allen racking up 15-16 sacks? Its a team game, & you need quality around you to do that kind of stuff consistently...& we all know what we mostly have on defense.

I don't think it is a lack or roid rage, the guy seems fired up plenty up as it is, but I do wonder if it has hurt his athleticism some. Or his self-confidence.

Hey man, we've all seen the reports and at least down here we know it wasn't technically steroids. It was something though and we've hammered out that conversation once or twice already.

My comment is this, Brian Cushing didn't have a single bit of hesitation last year. MJD trying to pull that move against 09 Cush would've endly in a run for loss and a bruise somewhere. The Cush would've unloaded everything he had without a second thought. 2010 Cushing came to a complete stop. Didn't attack. Barely got an arm tackle attempt in. That's nothing like the Cush of last year, who you would regularly see going stride for stride down the field with receivers, diving into every pile he could, hitting every body he could, imposing his will, physically dominating guys, playing with fire and attitude and confidence and every bit of mojo that you can look and see is not there this year. I want the fire back. I want the mojo back. I want the intensity, the passion and the RAGE back.

who knows? If he was coming off a cycle he was probably still pumped & "**** strong" feeling invincible.

Yeah.... I think James Harrisons $100,000 fines may have more to do with his hesitation than his steroid situation.

Last year, there would have been 11 Texans on MJD before he put his second foot down.

The whole team played like that... maybe not as good as Cush.... but we were attacking last year. We've been on our heels all year, playing out of fear, trying to prevent crap from happening, instead of making things happen.

So...when has helmet to helmet been legal? Brian Cushing is 250 pounds of strong, towering over MJD too. Wrap your arms around him and show us some of the **** we had to read about this offseason. The answer is definitely never to stop and think about James Harrison mid play.

Exactly

This about sums up the whole defense. Period.

Look, none of y'all have any evidence that Cushing was taking steroids. All we know for sure is that he had an excess of human chorionic gonadotropin in his system.

Human chorionic gonadotropin is extensively used parenterally as an ovulation inducer in lieu of luteinizing hormone. In the presence of one or more mature ovarian follicles, ovulation can be triggered by the administration of hCG. As ovulation will happen 24-36 hours after the injection of hCG, procedures can be scheduled to take advantage of this time sequence.[9] Thus, patients that undergo IVF, in general, receive hCG to trigger the ovulation process, but have their eggs retrieved at about 36 hours after injection, a few hours before the eggs actually would be released from the ovary.

As hCG supports the corpus luteum, administration of hCG is used in certain circumstances to enhance the production of progesterone.

In the male, hCG injections are used to stimulate the leydig cells to synthesize testosterone. The intratesticular testosterone is necessary for spermatogenesis from the sertoli cells. Typical uses for hCG in men include hypogonadism and fertility treatment.

So he was either pregnant, trying to get pregnant, or self-medicating for hypogonadism (decreased functional activity of the gonads). I'm going to rule out #1 right off, so it's a toss-up between the last two, IMO. And since hypogonadism is caused by low testosterone, I'm leaning toward him trying to get pregnant.

By the way, anyone care to hazard a guess how a young male athlete might suffer from hypogonadism?

You shouldn't do that, because I think he was pregnant, and if you guys want him to play like that again, you're just gonna have ta get him pregnant again.

I'm thinking that after Demeco went down, Cushing was told to mike up and call plays on D, that's alot of 'thinking', therefore less 'reacting'

4-Game suspension, completely new role (and for a few games a new position too) will do that to most people. He needs to get back into his comfort zone.

Last month, I had a conversation with an NFL physician (not of the Texans).
When the subject of Banned Substances/PEDs came up, we agreed that the "crackdown" by the league as well as the increased efficacy and accuracy of the testing has had a sobering effect on the use of such substances. This is especially so when it hits a team's own locker room. "Smarter" players get the message. With the Texans, a second player (if you exclude the Dec 2008 Bryan Pittman suspension), Duane Brown, was hit with the ignorance bug, reinforcing the message. Add to that the owner message sent by the "locker room (albeit half-ass) sweep" and the likelihood is that even some of the not so smart players got the message.

It would not be a reach to be able to deduce from this at least some of the "weak" Texans performance this season. The notable sudden jump in NFL injuries and slower recovery (including increased IR numbers) this year may very well be a reflection of more players "getting the message" (suspensions are the ultimate hurt to the player and his team)..........and having to deal with their own limitations and "mortality."
