Rumor: Auburn players Newton & Fairley to declare for 2011 draft

According to "insider information" Cam Newton & Nick Fairley from Auburn will enter the 2011 draft. I think if Newton does, he'll be making a really big mistake. McDaniels was crazy for taking Tebow in the first, and I seriously doubt a team will draft a QB who is so far looked upon as "Tebow-like".

Nick Fairley should definitely declare though. The guy is a beast DT and will certainly be a 1st round pick.

At best Newton will be a 2nd rounder...which may benefit the Raiders because I think Al is seriously considering grabbing him even though we have a ton of other positions of need.

There are other players who are rumored to declare for the 2011 draft, Aaron Williams from Texas & Kyle Rudolph from Notre Dame. Don't know much about those two so I can't really comment on them.

I can't see Rudolph entering the draft this season after getting injured, he'll definitely lose draft position because of it. I think he stays behind and improves his draft stock next year

With the threat of a hold-out next season and the possibility of there being no 2011 NFL season, I wonder if that will influence their decisions?

As I have told by mock draft partners Rmartin65 and Beerlover, I have tried not to like Newton but he is hard not to watch. His game against LSU was unbelievable. Tebow like or not, he could be a back up quarterback to a solid QB. He should thrive in an offense like Houston which offers him a strong RB cadre and great TEs/WRs. Newton is a very strong QB that could rip the middle of many of Houston's opponents, especially late in a game. I see him in the 3rd but not on my mock I will present later today, where I do offer a QB in third round.

Fairly could be a first even if he were to ride the bench rest of season. I can not conceive a reason he should not come out. In fact, if 2011 turns out to be a "no cap" year (atlhough I do think we will have a new CBA) he could get a better deal than waiting. I have him on my new mock #25 Texans.

I am not as high on Aaron WIlliams as some, but hope he goes high to allow my guys to come to Houston.

Cam Newton until he learns how to be a drop back passer will be just another QB that runs that has never won anything in the NFL. The only running QB that we have ever seen win a SB was Steve Young, and he was just a great QB all around that could run.

NFL QB's are just too risky to run, could you imagine Ray Lewis and others giving him shots while he's running, he won't run for long like that.

If you are talking about the Super Bowl, there are tons of drop back passers who have not won that game. On the other hand, many QBs that "run" have won many games. Newton is not just a runner. He can pass and appears to be fairly accurate. Also, the team make up would have a lot to do with his success. Going to a strong, well balanced team would be of great benefit as I pointed out.

I believe the ideal situation if he were to come out this year is to be picked up by Houston. The chances of him being a bust is much less with you guys than if the Raiders were to pick him up with how our team is currently built.

The guy is just a beast though. At 6'6 250 pounds the guy can run through most tacklers at the college level. If you've seen him play, you'd be pretty surprised at how fast he can run given his height/weight. I just wonder how well that will transition into the NFL.

The guy has a pretty quick throwing motion IMO, and he throws some amazing balls. Check out THIS video to see all his throws from the start of the season up to game 8. I think he could develop into a very good passer, its just a shame Auburn doesn't utilize his arm as much as they should. But hey, what they are doing right now is working for them, so I don't blame them for not passing the ball more.

Now that I think about it, there isn't much he can learn if he stays another year at Auburn. He'll most likely be a run-first QB his senior year, it may be better off for him to get drafted in 2011 and ride the bench behind a vet QB and hone his QB skills that way.

I'm a SEC fan, I'm well aware of Cam Newton, we'll see what he does when he plays AL. I personally think LSU's defense is a bit overrated this year. AL's isn't a strong either, so we'll see what happens.

I'm anxiously waiting for that 'Bama game. Its easily the hardest game on Auburn's schedule, 'Bama is a much more balanced team IMO than any other team they have faced so far.

I'd love to see Newton throw 30+ times at least once this season...and that may very well be against AL if they manage to shut down his run game. I agree that a QB should primarily throw, but that option to run is invaluable IMO. Unless of course your QB is Manning or Brady .
