Cornerback Rotation

My speculative CB depth chart:

1 Kareem Jackson
2 Glover Quin
3 Jacques Reeves
4 Brice McCain
5 Sherrick McManis
6 Fred Bennett
7 Antwaun Molden
8 Mark Parson
9 Pierre Singfield (undrafted free agent signed)

Scurfield tweeted today that Kareem Jackson and Glover Quin were the starters in 7 on 7s today. This tells me that Jacques Reeves is now the nickel CB (at best). Clearly he was paid 20 million over 5 years to come here to be a starter. Now that his pay doesn't fit his role on the team, is he a threat to be cut in camp? I highly doubt it given the youth behind him at CB, but if McCain beats him out for the nickel job, and say hypothetically McManis looks good in camp as well and could justifiably be the dime or 4th CB, does it make sense to pay Reeves to be that far down on the depth chart?

Again there's also the possibility that the 2nd CB job is a rotating door based on week to week performance, which is the way it was in 2009.

I'd flip Quin and Jackson but I tend to agree. NS said Jackson was on the right side iirc.

You can never have enough quality corners (especially in this division) so I have no problem with a 20 million dollar nickelback, if that's what Reeves becomes. If he's cut from this team it better be because a COUPLE of corners beat him out and he got pushed off the depth chart altogether. Money better not be the reason why, because we can't afford to cut talent in the secondary just because their position doesn't justify their salary.

If that happens, I'll officially jump on the "McNair is cheap" bandwagon.

Exactly! Reeves ain't going nowhere. Bennet may not make it because he does not provide enough on special teams

The value of one's contract is based on team needs and the team talent level at the time you sign. He got that contract because he was the best guy available - in our price range - at the time. I wonder if he'd even be looked at - for that kind of money - if we were shopping for a F/A CB today.

And there's a pretty good chance the 1st rd rook will command a bigger paycheck than Reeves is getting.

His contract is for a very well paid nickel or very poorly paid starter. The same off-season he signed, the Jags did a very similar deal for a guy intended to be their nickel.

Rookies are pretty much slotted. He'll get something like 5 years $13-14 mil.

Didn't McCain end up playing the nickel towards the 2nd half of the year? I think Reeves was more of a dime back, unless I've got them backards.

I'm really excited about the corners we have. I'm a fan of Jackson and Mcmannis. We have a lot of youth in the secondary, but also a lot of potential. Quinn and Mccain played over their draft positions last year, lets hope they keep on surprising us as well.

Molden staying healthy and being a solid player for us would be a pleasant surprise as well.

IMO the final roster will be: Jackson, Quinn, Reeves, Mccain, Mcmannis, and Molden.

I think Bennett gets cut but we keep 6 CBs if Molden makes an impact in camp. If he gets hurt again or doesn't perform, we cut him and go with 5 CBs.

Does anyone think Quin or Jackson will shadow the other teams #1 like Dunta did last year? I'd be interested to see if they try that again this year since it worked so well last year.

Not right away. I think they'll play left side/right side until a guy proves to be eliteish.

I'm not surprised that Fred Bennett is not getting the reps in OTAs. I think the coaches have to look long and hard at the young guys just to see what they got.
