How about the little handheld "football" games - I think the first was white and the second was green. You could pass or run and it had a red dot moving on 12 columns and 3 rows. Can't remember what it was called.

Made by Bandai. Mattell Football classic. They reissued them a couple years ago and me and my brothers all got one for christmas.

It was made by mattel

I had football/autoracing/soccer/baseball

damn, my mom might still have them

*edit* Nitro nailed it

i had the green football one.. I think there was a way to speed the game up even more.. i think you had to hold a button down and then turn the game on ...

oh I remember the nights that I was supposed to be asleep and playing the game with the covers over my head .. only to get busted by mom and dad LOL

I've got "Mattel Electronics" Football on my iPhone. it's an excellent time waster and unlike most of the deeply involving games of today you can shut it off when it's time to do something else without a second thought. I remember when these came out and not getting one for Christmas was a fate worse than death in my mind. There was a "Cabbage Patch Kids" type run on them the year they came out. It wasn't the first toy parents had to fight to the death to get their hands on for the holidays but it's the first one I remember hearing about. The football rocked but I thought the baseball, basketball, and hockey versions were less enjoyable (though I have basketball on my phone too).

I can't stand Phillip Rivers either, he is definitely in the Top 5 of players in the NFL (or any sport) that I dislike the most. I hope Mario, Amobi, Barwin, Cushing, Demeco and Pollard all have a field day tearing him up when we play the Chargers (at home!!) next season.

Not that I ever wish harm on anyone, if Phillip Rivers and Cortland Finnegan could get in a fight against each other and both get beat up... I would be a happy man.

I had a handheld football game from the late 80's where 2 people played. One on eachside. I cant remember the name of it though...

It was green. That is all I have.

joe montana football '94 on the sega genesis was awesome. i forgot who i used (probably deion), but i loved running circles around the other team kinda like tecmo bowl.

Indeed it was a good game, nice being able to see the whole field so easily.

Funny how nostalgia can cloud perspective. I had a chance to play Tecmo, Madden '93, Ten Yard Fight, and NFL2k5 recently, and to be quite honest, they bored me to death. NFL2k5 is alright, but far from the idol worship that some folks lavish on it. It's a 6 year old game already and it shows (lots of jaggies and animation glitches).

Nothing can touch what they are doing with Madden and NCAA Football these days. It is amazing tech and the depth they are getting is astounding.

We were watching some old super 8 home movies that were transfer to DVD lately and me and my brother played the hell out of this game as little kids:

Gameplay > Graphics

The most appealing aspect of 2k5 besides its gameplay was its presentation, it felt like you were watching the game at times. The Madden series consists of mostly roster updates with each new release nowadays, with virtually no competition the developers have no reason to try to be innovative.

I'm content with my dated graphics, and I can download updated rosters easily...so its almost like I'm playing NFL 2K10 :). I will still try Madden 11, and hope that its a better game, but from the little info that has been released so far, it doesn't seem like it will be any different from previous installments. Hoping Backbreaker doesn't disappoint.

I've still got NFL2k5, and it plays on my 360. The gameplay is waaaay overrated, IMO. The passing game is a breeze and nowhere near realistic, and 300+ lb. linemen are cutting like they are receivers. I could name a list of other glitches, and I tend to think that people worship this game out of Madden-hate than it actually being a product worthy of worship.

Obviously, if you dig it, then play it. But, I can't go revisionist history when I've got it and have played it recently. It is dated and has some issues that keep both feet firmly planted in the arcade side of video game football.

p.s. I understand your presentation angle, but I normally fast forward through that stuff. I want to play football, not watch the whistles and bells of an ESPN presentation. JMO.

To each his own I guess. I do admit that the default settings for any difficulty in 2k5 are flawed, which is why I play with custom settings in an effort to make the game more realistic.

Well, there is a reason for the "Madden-hate". A lot of people are ticked off and hate Madden simply because of them signing a deal with the NFL, which killed any competition and as a result any need to improve. I personally have started to dislike Madden slowly over the years, when the game stopped warranting a purchase. The last game I bought was Madden 08, and with each release after that I never really saw a need to shell out another $60 for updated rosters and improved graphics. Hopefully Madden 11 will be able to change my mind.

Also, for those of you planning on buying Madden 11 no matter what, this deal might interest you. If you pre-order the game directly from EA you can get it for $40.

Remember Madden 97 on the Super Nintendo where you could play all the different training camp drills? 40 yard dash, field goals, rushing the QB...they were more fun than the actual game itself!

Tecmo Bowl is finally going to be released for 360, and PS3. It will be available for download through through XBLA, and PSN.

Heres a look at what its going to look like.

I cant wait, I'm gonna be a Tecmo Bowl playing mofo. :jam:

The person playing was awful. I mean they ran the same play 4 straight times! Will be interesting when it comes out.

I would have Rivers beat the balls out of Finnegan:)
