Houstonian & Steeler Casey Hampton says he might come home to play for Cowher

"I don't want that. I don't want that," said Hampton, who said he would not mind playing for Bill Cowher for Hampton's hometown Houston Texans next season -- a reference to speculation about the former Steelers coach's plans.

OK, OK it's just idle speculation but if Hampton, a FA this coming offseason,
would come back home to play for new Texans HC Bill Cowher (hey, I like the sounds of that !), we've got our nose in Coach Cowhers 3-4 and here's the rest of the front seven: Mario & Antonio Smith at DEs, Connor Barwin & Cush at OLBs with DeMeco & Zac Diles at the ILB slots. An impressive lineup ?

At first I was confused at the initial part of that quote ("I don't want that") since you cut off what he was responding to. Thankfully he just doesn't want to be franchised. I think that if he were willing to come here with Cowher it makes the transition much smoother though we should still draft a NT to develop in the later rounds unless Cowher believes Okam can be the future NT. Personally I prefer this alignment for the 3-4:
Okoye, Hampton, Smith
Barwin, Cushing, Ryans, Williams

Cushing would be one heck of a TED LB and this would give us 3 guys that can rush at any time.

I do not see Okoye as a DE, certainly not a 3-4 DE while Mario is virtually the ideal 3-4 DE.
Cushing played the DE in college in the Trojans "Elephant Defense" where he rushed from the standup position and actually was voted the Rose Bowl Defensive MVP that year as a soph with 2.5 sacks, so he would be an OLB in my 3-4 and most NFL analysits felt all along that Barwin was a natural "Tweener" (a college DE too small to play DE in the pros), who projected to OLB/3-4 in the NFL.

this. mario would be wasted as a 3-4 de. okoye would be fine there. still rather keep kubiak and the 4-3 though
 
If Cowher even came here I don't think we'd convert to a 3-4 immediately...we could see more 3-4 but not a complete conversion right away. Cowher is a smart coach and smart coaches coach to their personnel and we have for the most part ideal 4-3 personnel.

Hampton is old. I don't see any more than 30-40% of the defensive snaps out of him going forward and he'd predominantly play on 1st and 2nd down. So I really don't see what's so exciting about an aging NT whose role will only be reduced more and more with age.
 
Denver doesn't seem to be doing too bad this year and they were in the same boat as us personnel-wise after their transition to a 3-4...

Green Bay has done it too...

The problem is this. Frank Bush has done pretty well this year all things considered. I don't think that he'd stay on as DC if Cowher came on but Bush has definitely proven that this 4-3 Texan defense can work... we've seen the upside with this unit and I don't think our 4-3 base defensive scheme is the problem.. the scheme has been pretty good.

And we've actually run a 3-4 look a few times where Barwin rushed standing up. Amobi was the NT and Smith and Mario were the down lineman defensive ends. Barwin rushed off of Mario. That can work on 3rd downs and other exotic looks can work with those players as well. I just don't think abandoning our 4-3 base on 1st and 2nd down makes all that much sense. Maybe Cowher sticks with it because it works best with the personnel and finds a 4-3 DC. Who knows.

By the way, isn't Kubiak the coach of the Texans?? lol
 
Good lord this gets me excited to think we even have an outside shot at Cowher. The 3-4 defense didn't stop Bruce Smith from being a HOF DE. Unless you don't know more history of the league I don't know how you can say Mario would be wasted as a 3-4 DE. Belicheck made sure to spend first round picks on DE's since they are critical to playing this defense at a high level. Who would be a better DE than Mario? It's not like he is a big time speed edge rusher.
Smith's numbers are remarkable considering he spent most of his career in a 3-4 defensive scheme, which isn't conducive to sacks for defensive ends.

"Most guys that are able to get a tremendous amount of sacks are in a 4-3 defense, where they don't always get double teamed as much as I did," said Smith, who played in a 4-3 with the Redskins. "A lot of the great pass rushers usually had another dominant pass rusher along with them. Reggie White had Clyde Simmons (121 sacks, 13th all-time). You look at Deacon Jones, he had (Hall of Fame defensive tackle) Merlin Olson, the Fearsome Foursome, 4-3 defense.

"There were a number of other defensive ends and pass rushers that were dominant players. But when you accomplish what I did in a 3-4 defense you have to sit back, shake your head and say that's pretty damn impressive."

Just as impressive, but overshadowed by his pass-rushing prowess, was Smith's ability to play the run. He played with great strength and leverage, which helped him handle bigger offensive linemen at the point of attack.

Cowher is not coming here and Hampton is from Galveston. Cowher is waiting on the Carolina Panthers job....I'm willing to bet on it. Hampton is at the end of the road anyway. Stroll on over to Carolinahuddle.com and you will see the same kind of Cowher talk on that board.

Cowher would be a fool to take that Panthers job... salary cap hell, terrible QB who could get cut and create more cap hell... Peppers will be gone... not the most attractive job right now

But Carolina is home for him. I doubt Peppers goes anywhere and Jake might not get cut but I doubt he will be their starter next season.

Hampton is a force against the run. He's what the Texans defense has been missing, a DT that commands a double team.

Hampton is 30 yrs old and should have another 3 yrs left playing at a high level. I think the Texans should offer him a 4 yr contract.

DT's can be great 1-2 down players for many yrs after the age of 30. Think Ted Washington, Randy White,Curly Culp,Bob Lilly. ETC

Hampton has been very good drawing double teams this year.

You know, for years now I've seen people say that one player or another is old and not worth the cost or trouble to bring in but it seems like time and time again many of those players go on to play productive roles for years with other teams. Now sure, you probably want to avoid those high-mileage running backs who are past 30 years old but linemen are a completely different story. Hampton has years left barring injury. Not that we'll ever benefit from his presence but if you can go get Casey Hampton to be your 3-4 NT then you go get him.
