Message to Colts Fans: More than HALF the Texans Defense Was Overhauled!

Wow. I went back to watch the "Rosencopter" game, and man. Our defensive
talent and schemes are lightyears better than that. We had Travis Johnson,
Anthony Weaver, Petey Faggins, Morlon Greenwood, and Brandon Harrison
starting. DANG

Those guys are now replaced with premium talent:
Shaun Cody, Bernard Pollard, Antonio Smith, Brian Cushing, Dunta Robinson / G.Q. / Brice Mccain

Timid Defensive Scheme: Richard Smith

Aggressive Defensive Scheme: Frank Bush

THAT'S MORE THAN HALF OF THE DEFENSIVE SIDE OF THE BALL UPGRADED!

Wow. What a difference a year makes.

Holy Cow!! I wonder if the Colts will even bother showing up then.

The point I'm making is the defense that shut you down last year, was
garbage in comparison to this year. Only one of our starters on the entire
team is over the age of 27. Sunday should be a "passing of the guard" game
to the heirs of the AFC South.

Premium talent??

You can make the argument for Cushing...and mayyybe...nope. That's it.

Shaun Cody? Really? Pretty much interchangeable with TJ. I'll admit Pollard is an upgrade, but hardly a premium talent, especially against the Colts and their passing offense. And Brice McCain? Really?

But Peyton Manning will still be there. There's no doubt this is the best defense they've seen but Manning is still Manning. Anyways Go Texans :fans:

If you take my post in context, I'm speaking on the defense that led the
Texans to a 27-10 lead against the Colts with 5 minutes left in the 4th
quarter.

Cody has been penetrating the backfield FAR MORE than TJ. Pollard was
a 2nd round pick in the '06 draft. He's a pure SS, and he's playing like it.
I specifically referenced the starting corners from last year's game with
this one. G.Q., Dunta Robinson, Brice Mccain >> Petey Faggins.

So, yes in comparison, and in context, this year's additions and the
change in scheme are PREMIUM.

Ha, that's pretty funny.

IMO, I think Manning will still have his way with our secondary. I still think they're the weakest part of our team and it won't take Manning long to figure that out.

We'd have to have a perfect 60 minute game in order to pull out a W. We've yet to do that, so I don't think I should expect the 1st to be Indy. Heck, if it was Indy that we turned the ball over to 3 times in 1 half, they would've ripped us a new ass.

I don't think the Texans need to play on eggshells, as now have offense
to match the Colts. The Colts are #1 in passing, the Texans are #3. I'm
encouraged as to how our defense has been penetrating O-lines over the
last month, and unlike Richard Smith, Frank Bush WILL blitz. Our overall
defensive talent is fast enough to wreak havoc.

It will be a much more evenly matched fight than any of the previous 14
games against the Colts. Our defense is in the top 5 at forcing turnovers.
Our defense is also one of the best at stopping the run, and #1 at forcing
3-and-outs, and near the top in 3rd down precentage.

The concerns on ball control have meaning to BOTH sides. Their offense
can score, but dammit, SO CAN OURS!!

We have to take one of the two Indy games, I don't care which, but if we lose both of them, our chances of being in the playoffs are just not as good.

Go Texans!!!:fans:

This is easily the best defense the Texans have faced all year. Defense will decide the winner of this game. I don't see us running the ball effectivly. Here's to me being wrong.

It's also the best defense the Colts have faced. Both teams can wreak
HAVOC on an offense. This game will come down to 1 or 2 plays. I don't
see EITHER team dominating TOP, nor do I see a shootout. I see this game
being won in the 21-17, 17-14 range.

I think it's going to be very tough to win at INDY. However, I really like our chances at home. Remember, in the Rosencopter game, we shut the Colts' offense down from the second quarter through until prevent defense time late in the 4th quarter. And, by the way, DRobinson, A. Smith, B.Pollard, S.Cody, and G.Quin are very talented players on the upswing in their careers... not exactly mockable talent!

I know this goes into the whole "just happy to be over .500" mentality, but I'm just thrilled that this is a game where we have a chance to actually pull off a victory. Yes, Payton is Payton. He's one of the best at tearing a team apart, but he will make a couple of mistakes a game. They key is whether or not we can capitalize on them.....I know that sounds so cliche'. I may kick myselff in the ass come Sunday afternoon for even getting my hopes up, but atleast I'm not chalking this one up to a guaranteed loss as I have done in the past. This isn't a glamorous football team, but they're scrappy and seem to be playing with heart......so I'll take that every day of the week and twice on Sunday.

Last year was last year. It is meaningless to what happens on Sunday. The fact is this is a significantly better Colts team. And as Buddy Boy referenced - you are really stretching it to call some of those defensive players premium talent. Are they better? I am sure they are. But being better does not mean stopping the Colts and it does not come close to meaning a Houston win.

Sunday will not be a passing of the guard game regardless of the winner because the fact is the Colts will still have a healthy division lead. Save that passing of the guard stuff for when it actually happens.

#1 in 3 and outs
#1 against rush (last 5 games)
#4 in forced turnovers
#16 in yards per game(taking into account the first 3)

Sounds like we are a tad better. :chickendance:

It sure is nice to be playing meaningful games in November. We definately have improved on the D side of the ball, but it will take a 60 minute, mistake free game to pull out a win. We played Indy tough in both games last season, and by all rights, should've one the home game. Rosenfels should've gotten a gameball from Indy for that W. I'm hoping we can get a whole ballgame of good play in this one. If we screw around at all, Indy will whip our asses. Like they usually do. :gun:

I don't think our defense was the main factor in limiting the Colts during the Rosencopter fiasco. Peyton was not himself after coming back from multiple knee surgeries early in the year and it showed. Its unfortunate Sage found a way to give that one away because Peyton is playing like Peyton this year and even playing our best game guarantees us nothing. We have a shot but if Manning comes out on fire and is on his A game..... ugh.

Two good teams will play this Sunday, it should be a great game to watch. And I think we all know either team can take this game.

I respectfully disagree. Even if we do win on Sunday, the Colts are still ahead of us in the standings, and will have only ever lost to us twice. To take that title from the Colts, we would need win the division for at least 2 years in a row, beating the Colts at least half the times we play them while we do it. Respect needs to be earned through consistency of winning for an extended period of time, not by starting a season 6-3.

I follow this team throughout the entire week, not just on Sundays. I watch
every video Houstontexans.com puts up, and I've seen the growth in this team.
That mentality (happy to be over .500) took a blow after the second Indy game last year
(their last 3-game losing streak.)

Since that point, they've gone 10-4 (5-2 road.) This team has weathered
a brutal start during Hurricane Ike (3-7,) fought to even its record (7-7,)
and did NOT finish with a losing record like most teams in their situation
would have (8-8.)

The only people who say this team has "no shot" are the ones who
barely pay attention to the team, and ONLY on Sunday. This current
group has been battle-tested and are bringing well-earned confidence
into Indy. If you listen to our players, they no longer sound like "Oh,
those guys are good. I hope we play well enough and hopefully we'll
win."

Schaub was on the radio Monday morning, and if you'd like, I'll post the
link to the hour-long interview. A caller asked Matt if they look at the Colts
in "awe," or do they go in thinking they'll get a win. Matt responded, "If you
go into a game, looking at your opponent in awe, then you've lost before
you get off the plane. Yeah, they're a pretty good team, but there are
things WE do well, TOO."

Sounds a lot different than the "Oh, these guys are good" days of David
Carr. Believe it people, your Texans are playin with swagger. They
can put points on the board offensively, and knock peoples' blocks off
defensively. I see this game close, and a 50/50 chance the Texans will
win.

How is 7-0 and 5-3 equal?

How is 0-0?? That's their record against one another. Remember they've played both St. Louis and Seatlle already. If we had played both of those teams before this meeting there's a good chance that the records would be a lot closer, but we can't really do that.

Again, the record this season against one another is 0-0. That's ALL that counts.

I think that is pretty much the response that was warranted to the OP.

I don't think you realize how important this game is to a lot of Texans fans and how excited, nervous and pumped up we are about this game, especially with the way Houston has been playing as of late.

It seems that the Colts are just looking past the game and getting ready for the game after with the Pats while us Texans fans have been looking forward to this game all season. This is one of the biggest games in franchise history, so of course we're going to make a lot of posts similar to OPs. We're excited and we think we have a legit chance of winning the game. Plus, if you haven't seen the huge banner over the top, its a Texans message board.

Disregarding the whole "you can't just delete games that aren't supportive of your point" argument, 4 of the last 5 teams we've played have been in the bottom half of the league in rushing. Also, 3 of the QBs we were facing were:
Jamarcus Russel
Shaun Hill
Ryan Fitzpatrick

When you don't have to worry about the passing game, you can key in on the run.

While I'm not saying we're not a significantly better defense than last year, or even the first 3 games, I am saying to slow down with the passing of the guard stuff. We've seen the Texans come out and look pitiful right after a dominating game or stretch too many times to count.

I just can't agree with this. So, we're just as good as the Cleveland Browns this year since we're 0-0 against them?

At least we could look at the teams that we've played in common with Indy.

Against the Jags, Cards, 49ers, and Titans, we are 2-2. They are 4-0.

We are going into this game as underdogs. I'm not so sure I don't like that honestly.

With the exception of Jacksonville(which we stunk) I dont think the D really ever looked bad. Yeah, they gave up big plays, but they werent horribly over matched and completly pathetic. In Tennesse, they looked fairly dominant. THe Jets didn't get that many rushing yards till the 4th quarter, when the D was tired because the O did nothing. It was one of those cases where the stats didn't tell the whole story, IMO.

This defense has forced turnovers in EVERY game this year. They've done it by
flushing the quarterback out of the pocket. I don't see Manning having ALL FREAKING
DAY to throw everytime he drops back. Do not discount the pressure this team has
been bringing on defense. The sacks aren't there, but pressure DEFINITELY is!

First off, whenever this team (Kubiak-led Texans) go into a "primetime"
game situation, they ALWAYS elevate their play. The players are far
more amped up about this game than the average fan. I'm sure it was
circled on their calendar before the season. I've NEVER seen a Kubiak-led
Texans team flop when the stakes were this high.

They blew out the Broncos on Monday Night Football, and again blew
out the Jags on Monday Night Football. I know, big deal, just two examples.
Here's a third. This team fought its ASS off in Tennessee in the 2nd
game of the year, and it can be argued the Titans quit the season after
that game. I see the players taking that same attitude they had in
Tennessee up to Indianapolis. If the Texans want that respect, THIS
is the game they need to get. Texans are young, but they are VERY
hungry. Indy is the team they need to make a statement to. I remember
Peyton blowing us out, and laughing on his way back to the sideline.

I hope Kubes pulls that tape, and shows it to them all week. It's time
lil bro beats big brother's ass.

I wish we as Texans fans didn't have the mentality that we were Indy's "lil bro".

Listen to all the rebuttals to the "we're-gonna-kick-Indy'-ass" posts from
Texans fans. It's almost like they don't wanna offend Mr. Manning.
The VAST majority of Texans DO believe that Indy is "Big Bro."
I'm insulted that so many fans ALREADY concede victory of Sunday's
game to the Colts!

I went and looked back at the games the Colts have played this year. The Colts barely slipped by defenses that dominated the run game. Week 1 over the Jags 14 to 12 - The colts only went up by two with 1:59 left in the game. Week 2 @ Miami 27 to 23. Peyton's butt was on the bench for 45 minutes during this game. And last week against the '9ers 18 to 14 was a last minute win for the Colts.

In all but one game this year, Peyton has had over 300 yards passing. That one game was against STL. No need to air it out when you already have a huge lead.

I think that Frank Bush will have us running Man coverage and continuing to dominate the line of scrimmage. Our Secondary is better this year. Not to mention the hard work from our Linebackers. Cushing is on a ROTY run. There is no stopping this kid. He knows what it means to play this game against the Colts. He is going to do everything in his power to seal this win on Defense.

Man, I have goosebumps...

So it sounds like you don't think the Texans have a chance and the colts will win pretty easily, is that accurate?

Not accurate. You have not read anything that I have posted in previous threads. Not that you were looking for it either.

Either team can win. This is clearly the best Texans team the Colts will have ever faced. But basing anything off last year's Colts, which is what it seemed like that guy was doing, is simply meaningless. The Colts are a vastly improved team over the 2008 version. They have a better defense, Manning is healthy, the big play is back in the Colts offense. They are an elite team in the league.

Next four weeks should tell that tale. I'll give the Colts credit for beating the teams they should beat, a trait that our team, being so young, is still trying to gain some consistency at. Looking forward to this one.

Those knocking Cody saying he's a slight upgrade to Travis Johnson need to go back and look at the tape

This guy is doing damage on 1st and 2nd down, penetrating and tackling RBs...he's our best DT on run downs thats for sure

Yup!! Until the game is played, "Any Given Sunday". I seem to remember a weak-ass Cleveland team coming to town in week 17 of 2004, when we had a chance to go 8-8. What happened? FAIL happened. We wound up 7-9 which proved to be devastating while Cleveland wound up 4-12. That's why they play the games...... Just sayin'.

And I agree, I don't mind going in as the underdog, irresepective of records.

This will be our 8th attempt at winning a game in Indianapolis. I'm not saying anything to Colts fans until we succeed in doing this at least once.

I expect the idiotic "avatar wager" to rear it's ugly head at any moment.

Exactly. I don't like having the mentality that "we're-gonna-kick-anyone's-asses". We're a good team. I think we can win. But overconfidence and looking past teams will get you killed. Did I ever say I didn't want to offend Manning? Or that I've conceded the victory? Please point out where I said those things.

I'm just not going to go out and say, "we're so much better than the 7-0 Colts and we're going to destroy them on Sunday." It'll be a close game I think, the Colts are going to be a big challenge and a very telling game in terms of our playoff hopes.

I think we just have different opinions on how much the head to head record is worth. While the head to head is obviously important, I give more weight to the overall record. Also, I don't mean this in the sense the the team with the better record automatically wins. I DO think that we can win this game against the Colts, but I don't think that a win would qualify us as a better team.

I'm just not willing to say the Colts are a higher caliber team THAN the
Texans. I feel that these two teams are evenly matched, and the Colts
are NOT superior to the Texans this season. I am completely against
allowing the Colts to feel an heir of SUPERIORITY to the Texans.
Unfortunately, most posts regarding this game are in that vein (Colts
are superior to the Texans this season.)

We've won 1 game against them in our existence, 0 in Indy. Who wouldn't consider them superior at this point? If we win Sunday they'll still be considered the superior team. We've been their red-headed step child for 7 years.

Just because there are some of us not as optimistic as you going into this game doesn't mean you can call us out as people not following the team as closely as you. Which is bullshit by the way. I've been everything Texans since day 1, dude.

Don't disparage somebody for sharing a different opinion. You're a good poster and I'll hold ya to it. :winky:
