Could the Saints go undefeated?

The Patriots set the NFL record for touchdowns in a season back in 2007 when they scored 75. They broke the mark of 70 set by the 1984 Dolphins. The Saints have so far scored 25 touchdowns, putting them on pace for 80. New Orleans has scored 192 points. The Patriots at this point had 182.

Quarterback
The passing stats of Tom Brady in the first five games of 2007 and Saints quarterback Drew Brees so far this year are uncanny. Brees is 110 for 159 (69.2 completion percentage) with 13 touchdowns, two picks, four sacks and a yards-per-attempt of 8.81. He’s thrown for 1,400 yards.

Through the first five games of 2007, Brady was 117 for 158 (74.1 completion percentage) with 16 touchdowns, two picks, three sacks and a yards-per-attempt of 8.75. He’d thrown for 1,383 yards.

Like Brady in 2007, Brees has the ball out so quickly defenses are failing to put any significant pressure on him. And Brees’ accuracy on intermediate throws - on display in the Saints’ 48-27 shellacking of the Giants last week - has been the strongest part of his game. He and his receivers are so good it hardly seems fair to defenses. Like Brady in 2007.

Running back
So far, the Saints’ committee of running backs, Pierre Thomas, Mike Bell and Reggie Bush, have combined for 712 yards. The Saints as a team have gained 798 yards on 173 carries (4.6 yards per carry) and nine touchdowns.

The 2007 Patriots got 672 yards from Sammy Morris, Laurence Maroney and Kevin Faulk. And as a team, New England had the same number of carries as New Orleans - 173 - for 775 yards (4.5 average) and four touchdowns.

The Saints’ rushing attack is, according to Tucker, what’s making the offense go from very good to truly great.

Interesting take.

Could you imagine of Breesus had someone like Andre or Fitz to throw to? :mcnugget:

The Dolphins have upset potential this week if they can control time of possession like they did against the Colts and the defense can step up for them.

They could--their D is playing well b/c of the pressure their offense puts on other teams to score. With some luck it is possible...2 games left vs ATL, 1 game vs the Pats and 1 vs the Cowpukes

Marques Colston isn't exactly a WR to sneeze at, but point taken.

Robert Meachem ain't no slouch either. And then you have Jeremy Shockey at TE. Breez has some weapons to go along with an offensive line that gives him all day to throw.

I don't know if they'll go undefeated, but they are the clear cut Super Bowl favorites, IMO.

If anybody on that schedule has a good chance, it'd be the Falcons IMO.

When the Saints finally decide to make it through the second half of a season without imploding we can start talking about them being undefeated. They have always had that tendency, no matter how well they do.

:choke:

I don't think the question should be could because of course any team in any league could do anything. I think I would ask are they.

Plus, they have Pierre Thomas running really well in the backfield. Mike Bell isn't doing so bad either. Even Reggie Bush is contributing.

I had a feeling this could be the end of the undefeated Saints. Miami scares the crap out of me.

Yes the Saints have a chance to go 19-0. A small small chance, but a chance.

I would hate to be a Fins fan right now.

And if you had not figured it out until just now, Ted Ginn has proven once and for all that he will never be a consistently good WR in the NFL.

All I can say is that I'm very GLAD we do NOT have to play the Saints this year, unless we both make it to the SB, which is unlikely!! They are HOT, and I'm kicking myself more and more each day for not picking up Drew Brees for my FF team when I had the chance!! DUMB!!

As for Miami???? We better start game planning NOW, not the week before! They will not be any easy team to beat, esp on home turf.

yeah, the Darren Sharper pick-6 was 100% Ginn's fault. he dropped it. it bounced into Sharper's hands. the game is now 24-17. this was the opening drive of the 3rd quarter btw.

Sharper MAY have fumbled the ball before getting in the end zone, causing a touchback, but meh...moot point. Ginn isn't cutting it. if we had ANY depth at all at WR, i'd say cut him/deactivate him now. i know Parcells was never high on the guy to begin with.

I'll be honest, when I first saw the replay my first thought was that Sharper had fumbled before he crossed the goal line. Don't think it would have made a difference though. Miami obviously wouldn't have stopped them from scoring anyway.

some very dubious officiating in that game yesterday. that smelled like guido.

as for the OT, i think the Saints have a better shot than New England did in 2007. Drew Brees has some of the best fakes and playaction moves since Boomer Esiason and he has an elite WR crew ala Greatest Show on Turf of the early millenia. They went out and spent the money (even the head coach Payton pitched in) and paid Gregg Williams to come in and fix the defense. Needless to say, that was a great move and is the reason why I think they are nearly unbeatable.

It will take some poor field conditions for the Saints to lose. Yesterday it took them a quarter or so to get acclamaited to the grass field in Miami. They are a dome team, no doubt, but in today's league its not as big of a deal. More teams have domes than back in the old Luv Ya Blue team days where being labeled a 'dome team' was not in any way a compliment.

The Saints only outdoor games with a chance of snow are @Washington the first week of December and Carolina in 2 weeks. Washington sucks so I don't see them beating Saints even in snow and Carolina doesn't get a whole lot of snow.

The rest of the games are in domes and southern cities. maybe a rainy game could make it tough.

Their toughest Saints games remaining are Atlanta on the road and New England and Dallas travel to New Orleans. They will be prohibitive favorites in all the other games.

the ball would've been Miami's at their 20 I believe

Yup.

And Kastofna, yeah it was really close but I guess the deal was that there were just too many bodies between the ball and the camera on the only (farside) angle they had for replay. The official was in perfect position and was the only guy on the field with a clear view, so I guess that's the way it goes. Could have easily gone the other way and they wouldn't have been able to tell on the replay that way, either. Dems da breaks. Payback for that home cooking in the 1st quarter where the replay booth mysteriously "malfunctioned" on Bess's 1st down catch.:)

The thing that got me was how much and how soon Miami started going away from the running game. Not so much talking about the Wildcat, per se, as we were stopping that fairly well, but more so the traditional handoffs and tosses which were really gashing us in the first half. Passing the ball with an inexperienced QB really plays right into the strength of our defense IMO. Maybe you know better than me.

On another note, I actually laughed out loud when Ronnie Brown dropped back and fired that pass like 40 yards down field. Not laughing because Sparano dropped it, but because I was so impressed with how well Brown threw the ball and how he looked good doing it. I thought that was kind of awesome. Antrelle Rolle did the same thing for Arizona last night only to have Larry Fitzgerald, of all people, drop the potential touchdown pass (would have been called back due to penalty, but still).

i agree, i don't think the play should've been overturned, that's the way it goes. definitely makes up for the malfunctioning replay booth.

they abandoned the Wildcat from the getgo. they spent the bye week working on some "trickery" with it, apparently, and that trickery was doing something completely different, mainly keeping Henne on the field and not having Ricky do the jet motion. the new wrinkle in the Wildcat this week was NO wrinkle, basically. kinda disappointed in that. by the time they went back to the traditional set, it was too late, and the Saints were reading it fairly easy.

and yeah, Brown's pass was a thing of beauty. he had some great pocket presence on that play.

anyway, i don't see the Saints going undefeated. Miami had them on the ropes, and the Dolphins really aren't that good; the secondary is horrific, special teams is a joke, the WR/TE corps is embarrassing, etc etc. the Dolphins just put a lot of pressure on Brees early and he looked awful. shouldn't be that hard for a good team to do.

No freaking way the Saints go undefeated. I've seen plenty of teams better than this one from year to year that lose 2 to 3 games a year. They'll lose one in the next few weeks.

Here's the thing about the whole undefeated junk. Even if for whatever reason we were able to run the table over the next 8 weeks (which, although definitely unlikely IMO, is not impossible since we have one of, if not the, easiest remaining schedules in the league) then we'd have to be still fighting for homefield to have a chance at going undefeated. In other words, Sean Payton isn't Bill Belichick. If we have homefield locked up by week 15, our scrubs will have to be beating Tampa's and Carolina's starters in order to stay unscathed. It is Tampa and Carolina, but still there's still a pretty big gap in talent once Brees, Colston, Sharper and the bunch aren't out there.

So I do agree that we most likely won't go unbeaten, but maybe not for precisely the same reasons as some of you.

It is possible, but not probable.

The Saints look good, though, and I'm glad for that. I've always liked them ever since Bum and Earl ended up there, and now I've got some good neighbors from NOLA (Katrina victims) that are big Saints fans.

I'd love nothing more than to see a Texans/Saints Super Bowl, however unlikely that may be. :)
