Cushing solid backer for Ryans

Wolf

100% Texan
DeMeco Ryans got into it with teammate Brian Cushing in the locker room after the Texans' win over Tennessee.

Like veterans are wont to do, Ryans warned the rookie that nothing good could come from a tussle with him. He threatened to take the youngster outside to the parking lot to teach him a thing or three.

Cushing stood his ground - granted, his ground was a couple cubicles away - and even asked Ryans which type of fight he would prefer: a street fight or one with rules.

Ryans laughed.

"Whichever you choose," he said.

Were this not a victorious locker room, a gullible observer might think the two were about to come to blows.

No worries. Any blows these two deliver are more likely to be to opposing running backs than to each other.

For Ryans, just lining up next to another linebacker capable of delivering blows is so exciting he can't hide it. The best defensive player in Texans history almost gushes when he talks about a player who hopes to one day be in that discussion.

Rookie with impact

"He's a good player, a great athlete and a big guy that runs and hits. When he hits people, they feel it," Ryans said.

It is easy to forget that Cushing has played in only two games. The first-round draft pick from Southern Cal didn't even play in the preseason because of a knee injury.

This is just a rouse. During the Jags game they are planning to go at each other violently.................with a Jags player between them.:tv:

Cushing brings more than just talent to this team. He brings attitude and spirit, which has been sorely lacking for many years. A little friction / friendly rivalry between teammates is not a bad thing. Jamie Sharper talked about having it with Ray Lewis when the Ravens won the Super Bowl.

It gets me fired up to see some fire in this team!! :texflag:

I am loving what I am seeing from Demeco. Smith better get him signed if he doesn't want some pissed off Texans fans calling for his head. I love the attitude Demeco seems to be showing this season from his scuffle with Shockey in which he chunked him to the ground to his aggressive attitude he is exhibiting with Cushing. Keep the fire going Demeco!

Its all in jest, my guess is its stemming from Cushing leading in tackles.. Demeco has to set the record, he's still our best LB

I thought the picking Cushing was a solid first round choice. But the more I see the kid play and what I feel like he's impacted the attitude of the team. I'm loving the pick right now.

He's brought a fire to the defense that I haven't since Sharper was around. Not only does he bring the attitude he's not afraid to lay the wood. Scary thing is he missed the entire preseason and he leads the team in tackles.

I'd agree - I think he was a brilliant pick and I'm sure he'll become a major force on the D.

Locker-room passion is a good thing - if channelled.

(And you've got to love you American chaps!......Rules in the carpark? :wild:
The hell with that, Brian - hit him with a fire extinguisher and bite his throat out, old son!!!!:fans:)

We have the makings of a very nasty LB corp for years to come.:aggressive:

And this is a good thing. I'd love for the Texans to get a rep for being a bad ass defense. Of course we'd need some safetys, CBs and a few more lineman for that, but who's counting? LOL

I gotta admit Cushing has been impressive, though I've still got reservations about using the 15th overall pick on a SAM backer ? More important/higher rated defensive postions would have been CB and DT, but maybe the most important consideration is not to bust with the top-pick (for references see 2007 NFL college Draft, e.g., Amobi Okoye), and at this point Cushing appears to be anything but a bust.
And I'll tell you something else about Cushing, he's versitile and could obviously play MLB if we ever decide we might want to move DeMeco over to his old college posiiton at WIL. I dunno, Cushing himself might be able to play the WIL because he's unusually quick with excellent foot speed for a 260 pounder. He's a big boy who moves very well in spite of his size.

I will admit that I really did not want the Texans to take Cushing, I was concerned about how he missed games in college because of injury every year, and how there was so much talk about steroids. Now that Cushing is here, and I have learned more about him, and seen him play, I could not be happier with the pick. He seems to be an excellent character guy, dedicated to football, and knows how to bring it every play.

Why would we want to decide to move him somewhere else. They both are working perfectly fine where they are now. I guess it's kinda like... Don't fix it if it ain't broke. I think that all three... Diles, Cushing, and Ryans... could play all three positions successfully if they had to. It looks like we may not have to worry about that position while we plug in more pressing needs such as our backfield and both lines.

Despite all the glaring mistakes I've seen from two games. I'm really liking Brian Cushing right now. I just see 'HOF' written all over him. The 'Peyton Manning' of LBs, if you will. That guy is all business in the NFL. He has the commitment necessary to succeed. He appears to really understand the game of football hence the 'Manning' reference. Let's hope he remains injury-free.

WOW! You know this is getting out of hand. I have to say something. We had a bitter defeat that crushed us in week one and then we come back and steal a victory away from our most hated rivals. So we went from a really low to a really high. Apparently some of us are still high.

HOF??? Peyton Manning of LB's????? Are you kidding me????? Cushing had a good game. Considering he missed most of preseason and this was only his second game. I would not label him HOF material just yet. People need to come down to reality. He made more than one mistake (that is to be expected). He looks the part but its way to early to judge him good or bad.

THe biggest issue most of us had about him coming out was his injury history. 7 weeks into is career he has already missed 3 weeks of work because of injury. Im not trying to be Debbie Downer but some of you need to take a step back and take a look at things without letting the Tacs win influence you so much.

This team, Kubiack and Cushing still have alot to prove. I am as proud of them as any of you but lets see what they do over the next few games before we declare them ready for the big time. I feel sorry for some of you. I for one am not going to set myself up for another letdown like in week one. Not until I see some consistancy anyway. :)

Well theres my rant for today!

Kind of a dicky response there, mussop? I think you're the one who's overreacting more than anyone else here. What's with the hostility?

I didn't label him anything. I see the potential in him. That was an implied post more than anything else. Not a factual statement.

I'm just excited about him and I'm going to say that. I really like what I've seen out of him. He leads the team in tackles as well as tackles for a loss (I think). Sure, he's whiffed some. As I stated in my initial post, glaring mistakes...

Let me clarify the Manning-esque reference. I attributed it to his keen sense of awareness. Manning is known for that. I saw Cushing showing that keen sense of awareness in his first two games. This kid knows football. He has a lot to learn. He's going to make rookie mistakes and he's going to continue to make them throughout the year. He's also shown the ability to be a playmaker.

Just excited about Brian Cushing is all. Take a chill pill and take your 'feeling sorry for us excited people' and stick it where the sun don't shine. Being a football fan is all about looking at positives as well as negatives. Not everything on the Houston Texans is bad. There's a bright spot right now and that's Brian Cushing. I'm going to enjoy that bright spot for as long as it shines. May end next week but who gives a monkey's butt.

I think we all agree that Cushing has the ability, let's see if he can stay healthy, stay out of trouble, and continue to improve.

WOW again!!!! Kind of a dickey response??? I didnt mean it that way at all. Sorry you took it like that. I was just saying people need to temper the emotions after the big win. I in no way ment to come off as hostil.

You have to admit you went alittle overboard on youre praise. As have most people here. Enjoy it all you want but be real.

Gotta love you British blokes, using words like "carpark", LOL. Is that a compound word?

Whenever the team picks for need, fans go nuts saying they need to take BPA. Whenever the team picks BPA, other fans start talking about more pressing needs. Meh.

All I care is that he continues to improve upon what he's shown.

Need vs BPA ? Different issue entirely than what I'm talking about, which is the value which teams place on particular positions and the Draft pick they are willing to part with, subject to the abilities of the individual of course.
For example QB is the most valuable position of course followed by LT, CB,
& DLine (not necessarily in that order, but after QB they are the most important positions) while at the bottom of the hiearchy would be such position as guard, safety, and 4-3 SAM.

Calling a player the "Best Player Available" at that point and suggesting that he be passed over in favor of XYZ is in the same conversation. I understand that you're essentially questioning the methodology by which the Texans labeled him BPA in the middle of the first round, but it's essentially the same conversation. There were plenty of teams who had Cushing rated as BPA in the neighborhood of where he was taken.

Nope we're still not connecting here, so let me go at it this way.
Say in a hypothetical Draft a hypothetical team had the 15th pick in the first round and had roughly equivalent needs at CB and SAM LB in their 4-3.
And lets also say that on the Board when their turn to pick came around that both a CB and a SAM that this team had rated about the same were available. Virtually every time in that scenario the team drafts the corner because its a more valuable position, or inversly the player is more valuable because of the position he is thought to be skillful enough to play in a competant manner in the NFL.

I read the "payton manning" reference as the kid eats breathes and lives football and studies the game like payton (from what we hear)

just his work ethic

CB is a more valued position in the NFL. That's understood. But, it's not as if there aren't other 4-3 SAMs in the NFL that were 1st round picks. Cushing, Peterson, Greenway, and Orakpo (20% of the 4-3 SAM starting LBs) were drafted in the opening round of their respective drafts.

It's a reach to compare Cushing to Peyton Manning, at this point. But to be fair, Peyton Manning hadn't become Peyton Manning with just 2 NFL games under his belt.

It's a reach for ANYONE to be compared to Peyton Manning and that's not what my intent was. Manning-esque isn't really a comparison but whatever. I take back both posts that referred to him that way. Seems like the written word is to be taken seriously. I'll be sure to work on that.

You're first sentence above is precisely my point, and therefor all things being equal a team takes the corner (or the LT, or the DE, etc.) before it takes the SAM, actually before it takes any 4-3 backer generally speaking.
And for the record, the 4th pick in this years Draft (Aaron Curry) was a SAM at WF, but generally speaking they just don't go that high because they don't rush the QB, protect his backside, or cover pass-receivers man-to-man.
Orakpos primary value in college was as a pass-rusher which he will be in passing situations as a DE with the Redskins, though technically he may be a SAM and play LB in running-situations.
I dunno who Peterson is ?
Greenway on the other hand is very comparable to Cushing as he also has good size and moves well.
I think the fact that this was such a weak Draft had a lot to do with 2 SAMs being takin so high this year ?

While youre working on that (and you definetly need to) how about taking a chill pill. Sorry we arent smart enough to figure out youre little word games. When you start throwing around words like HOF and Peyton Manning what did you expect?

???

I didn't go overboard anywhere. I meant what I said.

I came here to talk about Brian Cushing. Not be told to keep it real. What do you have to bring to the discussion about Brian Cushing?

So now I have offended you by saying keep it real. "Seems like the written word is to be taken seriously. I'll be sure to work on that."

I have said my peice about Cushing. I think he had a good (not great) game. I am excited to see him keep improving and hope he does and stays healthy. So far there isnt enough to go on to even proclaim him a worthy first round pick. He has had 2 good games but alsp missed valuable time already with an injury early in his career. If I were to compare him to anyone at this point it would be Bian Bozsworth not HOF and Peyton Manning.

I am extremely impressed with Cushing so far. I didn't expect to be. I was not happy when they picked him and was a little concerned he never played in the preseason, although I didn't bring it up because it sounded too whiny and I was taking a "wait and see" approach. I really hope our LB's can play well as a unit this year. I like what we have there now.

Seems like a lot of "knickers-in-a-twist" going on in here...

In context, Cushing looked GREAT for his 2nd NFL game. (especially considering he didn't have pre-season to get warmed up)

It's too early to label him as ANYthing yet, but we can always hope for him to improve and play to the POTENTIAL that the Texans saw in him.

I think this year's draft class was solid overall with some good talent dropping into the third round.

So I'm curious who you had as BPA at 15? Who did you want there?

Oher was BPA IMO. Unless there is a game changing player just to good to pass up I always want trench guys early. :twocents:

I'm not the guy you were talking to but before the draft, I was of the opinion that the 15th spot was kind of a trap position. Any player chosen there could probably be seen as a reach because at that point in the draft, the only players left were probably going to be players with some glaring fault.

Cushing's questions were mostly around his durability and his possible steroid use. And possibly whether the focus of his training (which has a strong PL influence) would improve his performance as a LB or make him just a workout warrior.

I was fine with this pick. But I am still worried about it.

Thought Oher would've made a good addition to the line. I guess the question would've been do we slide Winston or Oher inside? Not saying the the pick would've been a mistake but I think it would've created more questions instead of proving an answer to one.

I guess I think the first pick of the draft should cross the line of BPA meets filling a need. I guess I'm not sure that we had a guy on the roster that would've played SAM as effectively as Cushing could. Wasn't overly excited when they called his name but I thought it filled a hole on the defense if nothing else.

IMO the BPA on our Board was probably Jeremy MacLin, the Mizzou WR. Of course that is arguably our strongest position and a team can be subject to dimenished returns if it drafts at its strongest position.
However it was a poorly kept secret that the player we really wanted was Malcom Jenkings, the OSU DB even though there was reservations about him being a true corner ?
My thoughts are that the Texans should have gone with their most highly-rated corner on the Board which would have probably been Vontae Davis, Alphonso Smith, or Darius Butler. Taking the top corner would have been like their 2008 #1 pick where they drafted on the basis of need and
position-value (a new term I've decided to coin) instead of BPA.

I'm listening to 610 radio this morning and they've got Cushing on at some function in Pasadena (the Houston 'burb).
Anyway he's a real sharp kid. Says just the right thing but not too much.
For all of you Cowboy-haters, sorry but that was his team growing up in NJ.
Said he wasn't that wowed by first NFL game, not the big step that HS was to
college playing Reggie & LenDale in practive and VY in Rose bowl game.
Confidant but not quite cocky. Real sharp young man and only 22 ? Impressive.
