Texans defenders go for Cornbread First-year coordinator Bush

In this era of free agency and the salary cap, the Texans' continuity on offense and special teams is amazing.

Every starter returns on an offense that ranked third in yards and 17th in scoring.

Special teams coordinator Joe Marciano, kicker Kris Brown, punter Matt Turk, punt returner Jacoby Jones and kickoff returner Andr? Davis also return.

The all-white-wearing fans who attend Sunday's opener against the Jets at Reliant Stadium have a pretty good idea of what they're going to get from the offense and special teams.

What nobody knows, however, is what to expect from the unknown factor, first-year defensive coordinator Frank Bush.

"For the first time, we have a defensive coordinator we want to play for," cornerback Dunta Robinson said this week.

Ouch!

Vic Fangio and Richard Smith must have felt that body shot all the way to Baltimore and Carolina, where they are currently employed.

Robinson is familiar with Bush after watching him as a senior defensive assistant before he was promoted when coach Gary Kubiak fired Smith after last season.

"He's a fun coach," Robinson said. "I think guys are going to try their best to make sure he looks good."

well sorry to burst your bubble, but its not a new defense

same defense, same scheme, and so far same production err lack of production

I don't know, I have seen more blitzing so far ..(but it was preseason)

and more susceptible to big yardage on screen plays

well if cushing is as good as advertise and we know Dunte can tackle .. hopefully that will be a big boost on this defense

safeties are still a concern, maybe next draft we can address that if someone is available that is worth it

I've seen more in preseason than I've EVER seen in 3 years of Richard Smith
when it comes to blitz schemes. In the Vikings game, Barwin tipped a pass
on a blitz on Brett Favre while they lined up in a modified 3-4 formation.
Peyton Manning won't be able to laugh at the line of scrimmage, which
he did to us in '06 on a Sunday I'll NEVER forget, because he won't be able
to know we're blitzing just by watching Demeco Ryans come to the line
of scrimmage. I love the disguising of the calls I've seen them doing, and
the speed of the defense is ALREADY much improved.

I'm a subscriber of NFL Gamerewind, and I'll be watching this game all
week long.

I'm not going to go far out and say the same defense.

I will say however, until I see consistent postive production on the defensivie side of the ball it's still a Dick Smith defense.

if we can get to sanchez, sacks or hurries, just enough pressures to make him throw away...

i think we can win this game.

but if we can't...

What were the key words Bush used himself to describe his defense......violence...attack.....get up field...

I don't know about you....but I like them words....we'll see what happens.......

That's a quote from Richard Smith, also. That's why so many fans have a hide and watch attitude.

Disagree on all counts

"For the first time, we have a defensive coordinator we want to play for," cornerback Dunta Robinson said this week.

But let me see if I have this straight here. If the team loses, for whatever reason, it's still a Richard Smith defense, but if they win, it's not?

Yeah, that makes perfect sense.

i disagree. i site the Minnesota game for an example of what is to come and i think it fits as it was the game where our starters played the most. we saw a lot more variation in the blitz schemes and Farve was always under pressure. we also saw a new variation of the 4-6 and i would be very surprised if Bush didn't come back to it this game as it's built to stop the run and they have Jones and Washington in the backfield. i'd expect to see him force Sanchez to throw the ball and try to lock up coverage with a lot of man to man press and send those blitzes. optimism is like a drug. don't throw me an intervention.

I tell you what, Dunta better come out with both barrels blazing. In the past I think he's come out and had things to say about different areas of the team that were going south and everybody agreed with him so everyone liked it and him. I'm getting tired of hearing him complain about everything except the defense which has held us out of the playoffs for two years now. The offense took a step forward but we're still waiting for the same from the defense. There isn't anywhere else to point now.

More double speak

Duta: You're paid to play to the best of you abilities regardless of who the DC is.

The defensive guys have been making excuses for 5 years.

I'm tired of the excuses.

Prove it on the field.

At least D-Rob is consistent (about Richard Smith getting fired)

Cornerback Dunta Robinson, the 10th overall pick in 2004, wasn't surprised by the moves.

"Sometimes change is needed in order for you to get to where you got to go -- in order for your team to be successful," Robinson told The Associated Press. "I think it's a good situation. I know how bad (team officials) want to win. So they'll do whatever it takes and bring the right coaches in here to help our team get to what we're trying to achieve."

Robinson and other players had hinted at discontent with Smith during the season and players were baffled at the defensive struggles on a unit filled with high draft picks.

"We definitely have the talent," Robinson said. "We feel like we have the talent to go all the way. I think toward the end of the season, the players had the chemistry, but I don't know if we had it as a whole defensive unit being coaches and players both. I don't think the chemistry was there between some of the coaches and the players."

Kubiak took some responsibility for the team's defensive struggles and said he told Smith the same thing Tuesday morning. The Texans have three first-round draft picks starting on the defensive front -- Williams, Amobi Okoye and Travis Johnson -- but Kubiak said he and general manager Rick Smith need to assemble more talent.

But Kubiak also told the defensive coordinator he was disappointed in players' development.

What the Texans D needs is to watch Agression Training Film to understand proper technique:

Begin with the head on FRONTAL ATTACK Technique

images

If you miss front on, pursue the REAR ATTACK technique

images

Even if you are overpowered to the ground, engage the good ole SOUTHERN ATTACK

You may not desist until you see this expression on your opponent

............and until you see him assume THE position

This is the way it's been for the last three years. We show pressure & aggresion in the preseason, maybe even the first defensive series of the regular season.

As soon as we get burned, when it counts, we go back to 4 man rush, prevent defense.

Yea...with Richard Smith...

Frank Bush ain't no Richard Smith...

I found this vid of Frank Bush at the main homepage. Richard Smith was a
joke of a coach, but if you can watch this vid and NOT get fired up, you ain't
no competitor.
