Casey Hampton

Honoring Earl 34

Something Witty !
What would you give for him ?

Asked during a Monday chat whether he sees any potential surprises on the cut-down horizon, La Canfora wrote, "One player I am sniffing around on right now is Casey Hampton. [Editor's note: That's one hell of an image with which to start the morning.] Steelers could use some cap room, he may not be [someone] they would extend at this point. [I'd] think a trade is more likely, but some people I know close to the situation say they would not be stunned if a move of some sort was made."

Dammit! Don't start a thread about a bad to the bone, run stuffing, stump of a DT unless they're already signed. I seriously thought we aquired Hampton overnight. Demeco is even upset with this thread.

A 3rd and the 5th we got from TJ. I would not trade a first or second for a 32 year old player.

I don't know about a 3rd for a 32 year old. Maybe two 5ths.

I would definitely love to have Hampton. I've been begging for a run stuffing NT all off season. They could play Hampton as a 2 down NT, and move Smith inside on passing downs.

There are news stories in Pittsburgh about the possibility of the Steelers releasing Hampton in the final round of cuts. Here's one:

For an analogous deal, the Jets traded a 3rd and 4th round pick to Carolina for Kris Jenkins, shifting him from a 4-3 DT to a 3-4 NT. Jenkins was 29 at the time; like Hampton, Jenkins had multiple Pro Bowls on his resume, and the Jets signed him to a $20 million guaranteed deal (5 years, $35m total) in the trade.

Also, the Browns traded Shaun Rogers to the Browns for a third and CB Leigh Bodden, but this trade was after a deal with Cincy for a third and fifth fell through. Rogers was 30 when he was traded.

Hampton turns 32 tomorrow, but he is still a very good player. I'd see if the Steelers bite for a third and a fifth (their choice between our pick and San Diego's pick). I think a nice four year deal could work.

I'm drooling at the thought. He would instantly solve our DT problem. That means there is, of course, no way this deal will happen.

Exactly. For Pitt, who would I am sure love to win another SB... what would be in it for them besides getting worse on defense this year? Who would step in for them?

Isn't he more of a classic 3/4 type NT, ala a Curly Culp? I guess I'm not certain if he fits our scheme. I know he is a very good run stuffer but at his age, I wouldn't give up the farm for him.

Steelers NT Casey Hampton and defensive coordinator **** LeBeau laughed off rumors that the run-stopper would be cut before the season.

The 32-year-old is entering a contract year, but he's an unlikely candidate for release. Instead, the Steelers will let him walk as a free agent after the season.

Is this a smoke and mirror act, to up the anny?

Wait a tick. So your sayin theres a chance...

drewmar74: What do you think the chances are of a organization like the Texans and a DT like Casey Hampton... ending up together?
Rick Smith: Well, dm, that's difficult to say. I mean, we don't really...
drewmar74: Hit me with it! Just give it to me straight! I came a long way just to see you, Rick. The least you can do is level with me. What are my chances of seeing Casey Hampton in a Texans uni?
Rick Smith: Not good.
drewmar74: You mean, not good like one out of a hundred?
Rick Smith: I'd say more like one out of a million.

[pause]

drewmar74: So you're telling me there's a chance... *YEAH!*

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm......

I'd offer both 5ths, one regular one conditional (on how many games played) that can be moved up to a 3rd. If the Steelers are letting him go though...That gives bad vibes unless it really, truly is just a cap move.

Things like this are too good to be true from in Texans fan's land. I would love for it to happen, but I wont get my hopes up too high.

The Steelers have a number of players in the last year of their contracts (including Hampton). They may want to free up money to work deals with the players they want to extend. Hampton has all but said that if he hits FA, he's gone. I seriously doubt they will outright release him, but, if they do, it will be for financial reasons. The more likely scenario is a trade, as they want to get something for him.

This team, in particular the defense, is still extremely young, so I wouldn't mind giving up two draft picks for a veteran player. IF we had Hampton, we would have some real flexibility on defense of the first time:

Base Defense: Mario, Hampton, DelJuan (a far better run defender than Okoye), Smith with Cushing, Meco and Diles (Adibi is killing this team with his lack of gap discipline) at LB.
Long Yardage (non-nickel): Mario, Okoye, Smith and Barwin backed by Adibi, Meco and Diles. Diles comes out in a pure nickel.

The only iron-men in this scheme are our two bell-cows, Mario and DeMeco, and this year's big-money FA in Smith. Hampton plays only on run downs, Okoye is a pass-rusher, and the two rookies start out as specialists while they learn to become every down players.

A fan can dream, can't he?

Love it!

Tried to rep ya.....must spread rep...yada yada

If the Steelers think he's expendable, doesn't that mean he's done?

No. The Steelers let a lot of players go who they feel can be replaced by younger and cheaper guys coming in. Pittsburgh has one of the most sensible organizations in the world and despite the fact that we look nothing like them (so far) they're a team McNair would love the Texans to emulate.

He likely has a few more good years left in him but he would be too costly to extend at this point when they could instead promote from within and start getting his replacement some experience.

When you are deep across the board like the Steelers you don't have to pull your hair and bite your nails over every good player who maybe no longer fits into your plans. Are they great with him? Yes. Are they great without him? Also "yes".

Won't happen though. It would make too much sense for the Texans to go solve their problem this way.

Hampton is a differece maker (run stuffer) this team has been looking for since Seth Payne was let go.

After seeing our DT's getting their butts kicked all pre-season I wold gladly give up a 3rd and a conitional 5th that cold become a 4th depending on (snaps played and team record).
