Cushing benches 225lbs 35x

Excellent video. Thanks for posting it.

That was apparently posted yesterday by the owner of the gym. It looks like Mr. Cushing is fired up and ready for camp.

I hope he has a great year this year.

I can tell Cushing sure does a lot of bench pressing by looking at the wear and tear on his shirt! WOW!

I used to be able to do 14 in college. These days though, I'm with you.

Yeah, the last time I was in Saudi in the Air Force and worked out a ton, I used to do 4 sets on the bench with free weights while doing chest.

I would do 155 X 12 reps, 165 X 10, 175 X 8, and 185 X 6. IF I didn't do those, I could do 225 around 16 times or so IIRC. I weighed 176 lbs at the time. And even though I didn't ever max out then, one day about 30 mins after a full work out while sitting around and talking about our lifting regimens, I put up 315 once on the bench (machine weights). I was strong as a horse then. So yeah, 35 reps boggles the mind.

I'm taking the count down for not locking out early in the set

Yeah, I know what you're saying, but nobody really does.......ever watched the "NFL's strongest man comp."? They never lock out either, lol usually it's some big guy with short arms that wins that thing.

LenWhale White should be crapping his pants by now with dreams of Cushing picking him up and body slamming him.

That is an excellent looking workout plan. It seems very doable.

Are the weekly plans that you linked based on one workout per week? Do you know?

The World record holder Chabot only benches once per month and skips a muscle group each day to ensure recovery. It's important to do little and get out of the gym.

For Assistance work during this program-- DO. Rack lockouts, skull crushers, and close grip incline presses. Keep the reps under 5.You want to stop just before you fail in the power game, but still make it hard. On other bench press days do shoulder work and do high rep tricep push downs.

It implies that the regimen is once a week, excercising other muscle groups the rest of the week. But it would seem that lighter weights would be used for the same muscle groups at least at one additional weekly sessions.

Well, that means you have to get completely into it then.

I used to be able to bench press 225, and I have been doing push ups several times a week for several months now. I was hoping I could somehow just get by with doing the workout as printed without much more added on.

Apparently not.

Impressive Video, but I think I was more impressed with that Texans logo on the shorts.. it made me proud to see a beast supporting the Texans and not just random workout gear

I can't agree more than what Ben said above. We all knew that Cush was a workout warrior but to see him throw up and I mean THROW up 225, 35 times in HOUSTON TEXANS shorts was OUTSTANDING!

And for any "man" who thinks putting 225, 35 times is a piece of cake, I have $1,000 cash to witness that live, plus you have to be steroid free and gh free.

Besides, Mr. Cushing! ;-)

I'm pretty sure he gets all the free Texans' gear he can handle.......it's really not that surprising to see him rocking our workout gear. He probably has a bag full of sweats, shirts, pants, shorts, towels, and gloves.

That is what I was thinking, he would also be penalized for bouncing it off his chest.

As for working against TEs, I found the measurement sheet from the senior bowl, and for someone his height, he has really short arms, I hope he can shed the blocks of the OTs and TEs he will face. Cause he makes Winston's "short arms" look long. Cushing arm length was 31.75 ".

I am still not sold on him being a stud, he is going to have to prove it to me. I was not impressed with him on tape last season.

Well Connor Barwin's arms only measured out to 33 inches and he's expected to rush the passer. I hardly see how just a little more than a extra inch is going to make that big of a difference.

Plus, most of the OLBers I looked at had arms around where Cushing is at.... If Cushing isn't succesful in this league I doubt "arm length" will have anything to do with it.

I guess that's an impressive feat but here's my question - how big did he have to get to accomplish that ? In other words, I dunno if he could even run a sub 5 flat 40 at that size ? It's a tradeoff you know.
BTW, did he even extend his arms on the first 25-30 reps ?

he did 30 reps at the combine & ran 4.6. so i dont think being pretty much the same size & doing 35 hurts his speed much if at all

All you ever hear from players is that Cushing flies around on the field. I doubt he runs a full 40 yards in a straight line on many plays anyway.

Oh and LOL at people trying to critique 35 reps of 225. Find some way to make it seem less impressive why don't you? This guy is a certified animal.

I think painkiller is just musing on the fact that big benchers tend to be short armed guys and just because you are a big bencher doesn't mean all that much in relation to production on the field. The cynical pundits say that Cushing is more bodybuilder/weightlifter-guy than football player. Long arms help keep big bodies off your body and that is probably more important than a few extra reps on the bench. It's nice and it's impressive, but I'm not sure it really means much on the field. That said, I'm glad he is here manning the Sam...time will tell if he is a stud or just another player.

I hope this translates into him being a read bad a$$ LB for us. :texflag:

Yeah, I'm trying to keep my expectations in check but it's hard to not get a little giddy thinking of Cushing getting a good shot on a qb/rb/te. One unshakable expectation I've had since he walked up to Goodell is that he brings the pain. We've all been there, wanting a little attitude from the D...well...I think we've got that now.

I'm in this catagory. While it is an impressive feat, it doesn't mean squat if he can't perform on the football field.

Agree on the arms locking out too. Although, they all seem to use this technique when going for maximum repititions.

I don't think jacking up 35 reps on a bench has much to do with performance on a football field either........I'm actually in the camp that thinks Cushing is getting kinda too big. I believe I heard Kubiak somewhere saying he was as big as 267 pounds (Which he admitted was more than at the combine). Anyways, I just thought it was impressive....that's all.

He weighed 24 lbs. less at the combine.

Whenever he starts looking like Demeco did last year (swollen, overly bulky) I will have reservations but until then...if he looks natural being a beast let the man be a beast. We brought him in to be a beast. Beast it up.

Funny how I've only seen you 32oz x 3 reps at Pluckers on game day :toast2:

I am hoping that the addition of this beast allows us to bump TEs at the line to throw off their timing. Also, since Cushing and Adibi are much more reliable cover backers than anything we've had before maybe we can blitz Ryans more this season. He's been successful at it when we've let him loose on the qb.

225 seems to be a major landmark.....thought you might find this interesting: Program for the 225 Bencher

Every time you add a big plate, it's a landmark to a lifter. The big plates are 45# and the olympic bar is 45#.

So major landmarks are:

135, 225, 315, 405, 495, 585, etc.

You'll see lifters getting mental blocks and hitting plateau's at these points. My bench sucks and it took me forever to hit 225, I'm still stuck around that point. With my squat, I chased 315 forever before I got it and when I got it, I almost immediately got up to 405 and now I'm halfway to 495.

But you'll see those numbers as goals in lots of articles.

I can't wait until that Texas heat starts messing with all that bulk trying to move around the field. I would guess that 250 to 255 would be an ideal weight. BTW the Cards OLBs 2 years ago weighed more than Cushing does now.

I think it's easy to be positive in the offseason. I was down on him pre draft. After we drafted him I had to figure out if I was down on it. I took a wait and see but since then it's a combination of being hopeful and something infectious about his mentality. That's what I'm choosing to focus on because I too was not impressed with what little film I saw. But I think he's got something chemically in his mind that I hope spreads like wildfire to the other players on this defense. I'm very wait and see with him but I'm excited about what he may bring from the heart/mind standpoint. I think that's very real.

Go Texans.

Haha, the best part about this video is the NJ nature of his shirt. It's ripped in the chest where the bar hits--but the video starts this way so I guess he likes wearing it Hulk style: muscles so big no shirt can contain it.

As for Cushing, time will tell for him but I'm optimistic. Dude has played linebacker since he's played football. Highly recruited out of high school, played four years in college for a good linebacker school.

Morlon Greenwood was a yoked up dude but didn't have very good football instincts. He was out of position a lot and wasn't an efficient tackler--uh, skill sets that are handy for linebackers.

Having a guy committed to football who knows the position is a good thing. And another redass on defense can be another handy thing too.

When I was a kid , the coaches said a LB has to be mobile , agile , and hostile . Cushing has all three of those plus some size to boot .

I heard that in 70's , about thirty something years before Coach Boone . Actually that quote came from Bear Bryant a long time ago ... not Bear Boone .

I'm not saying Boone started it, or even used the quote in real life, but the movie is based off of the 1971 season.

In 1971, the city of Alexandria decided to totally integrate its school system and appointed Herman as its first consolidated head football coach over a legendary white coach Bill Yoast with several years seniority and a steadfast citywide following. He was honored to have been selected, but extremely apprehensive about the challenges that lay ahead.

More than likely Bear Bryant got that quote from Jake Gaither.

“It is bad coaching to blame your boys for losing a game, even if it is true.” — Jake Gaither

So tell Kubiak to quit dogging TJ, and I'll quit dogging Reeves!
