Spin Doctors: Steve Slaton vs. Chris Johnson

By Brad Evans

Last year, rookie gems Steve Slaton and Chris Johnson electrified the fantasy masses with numerous fruitful performances. Their efforts have propelled them into the first round of 12-team drafts this year. But which AFC speed demon will prove more valuable? The Noise and Piano Man listen to their stethoscopes to provide a diagnosis.

MORE

I realize that there is a separate forum for fantasy discussion but we all know this will probably boil over into more than that.

It's really hard to say since the # of TD's per season for any player has a lot to do with luck considering how many times a guy can get tackled before the end zone or how many times he's the go to guy in the red zone. There is a lot of luck into that.

I'd say Slaton though going into this season because Slaton will be the undisputed #1 guy on the Texans and at this point there is no TD hog on their team like LD who will get a ton of TD's himself and more than what Johnson will for sure on the Titans. Johnson will still get quite a few, but LD will be a big time threat to Johnson every week as far as TD's.

Plus the Texans should have a much more electrifying offense than what the Titans will have, so the advantage there again goes to Slaton.

They're both really good.

Obviously, I'm biased toward Slaton. I'm hoping he dominates all year.

And just as obviously, I'm biased against CJ. I'm hoping he implodes and takes the Titans with him.

But they'll both probably have very good years.

Agree with everything. Johnson will be hurt by LenDale, and I have a hunch that we will be going to the air a little more in the redzone (excluding the goal line of course) with the addition of an even better receiving tight end in Cook than we've had since Wycheck.

Honestly don't think you can lose with either. Slaton will be the undisputed guy in Houston, but I think Tenn is really going to lean in the running game this year even with adding Kenny Britt to the WR corps. They also drafted Javon Ringer though.

As far as fantasy football goes I would give the edge to Slayton. They are simular backs and Texan fans and Titan fans could argue which is the better back all day, but as of the moment the Texans do not have a known quality at back up RB. The Titans have the whale as a back up and all fat jokes aside he is a good back up back. Right now no one can say for sure who the Texans will have as the number two back. Slayton should get more carries than Johnson. With the whale posible coming in to steal some of Johnsons goal line touches.

For Fantasy the edge probably goes to Slaton. Johnson is a great runner with a good backup and a team that likes to run. I just think Slaton is more beneficial from having Andre Johnson, OD, and even Walter to take up defenders where Chris Johnson is probably the #1 option offensively for the Titans. The Titans line up to pound it which good for any runner but with how spread the Texans offense can be Slaton should rack up more yards, more TDs and more receptions. Again.

I think it really comes down more to their O-lines performance this coming year than anything to with the the backs. If the Texans line stays the same as last year, getting pushed around and making Slaton change direction in the backfield, then they will be about even like last year. If they improve to where they're not getting blown off the line it's going to be no contest. Slaton has better vision and is a better receiver, where Johnson's only advantage is in speed.

Don't know how you can say better vision. I'll give you the receiving.

It's not a knock on Johnson, he has good vision, but Slaton often sees holes before they open and puts himself in position to exploit them. I have to give the edge in a relatively close race for his precognitive abilities.

simple, slaton cause he's got hands & has the ability to double up on the points for you in the run game & pass game.

I'd be happy to have either RB on my team. Slaton or Johnson. Would not matter to me much but this concerns me a little about Chris Johnson...

Tennessee Titans running back Chris Johnson is using his Twitter account to solicit touchdown celebration suggestions because he wants to top the antics of Terrell Owens and Chad Ochocinco.

More power to him if he wants to do the TD celebration thing but those are two bad examples to follow. TO's antics entice feuds with his disrespecting the Cowgirls and the ball spin on the 50 yard line. Ernest Givens and his electric slide never really was meant to irk opposing teams. His slide was to get the fans pumped. TD celebrations should be for those to get fans pumped not irk or disrespect opponents. Ocho Cinco... I do like his antics but stick with one and make it a thing that fans can recognize and particpate in. I knew the electric slide was coming everytime Givens scored. I loved it.

I don't want to sound like I'm on TO or Stinco's side, but they at least seem like they have a few energized cells left in their brain. And, I might have JohnsonRB pegged wrong, but he sounds as if he has to thump his head every day to wake his last remaining brain cell.

I am far from perfect, but people destroying the English language has always been a pet-peeve of mine.

Are you referring to my grammar?

English is my second language but I do try VERY hard to ensure that I get it right.

No, no, Nitro. I'm referring to Johnson the RB.

Your grammar's just fine my friend.
Phew! I though I had egg on my face somewhere. I do see a couple of my sentences that probably are incomplete but I use those in conversation sometimes.

Back to Chris Johnson and Steve Slaton.

I'm not too fond of it either. I realize what he's doing is in fun (changing his little nickname as well) and thats all good, they should have fun. But it brings a negative perception to CJ and the Titans and I'm not fond of bringing attention to yourself, especially in this way.

That said, I'm a firm believer that antics like this rarely affect what we see on the field and as long as that stays true I have no problem with it.

Back to Chris Johnson and Steve Slaton.

Well, like I said, I'm far from perfect. I'm very poor with comma placement.

Anywho, both are very talented RB's, but I think Slaton will have more attempts. Plus, seeing they are very similar, I'd take intelligence over ignorance.

That's not egg... :mcnugget:

I was in a mock fantasy draft and I ended up picking up both Johnson and Slaton.... too bad it was a mock. :gun:

Boy. I'll say.

:jk:

:spit: Thanks

I was always horrible in English (the class). Having a super hot teacher for two years straight didn't help matters.

Ha, that'd be pretty sweet. Although, the Whale had almost double the amount of TD's that CJ and Slaton each had.

To me it's going to boil down to factors outside of both RB's control.

Slaton: O-line needs to improve. Having to juke 2 defenders before hitting positive yardage is not going to help and Steve had to do that a lot vs top tier run defenses (Minny, Pitt, Ten, Bal). Rest of the offense is perfectly capable of applying pressure through the air.

Johnson: The rest of the offense has to catch up to the running game. Collins is okay, but I don't see a lot of 300 yard passing games from him this season. The O-line is already outstanding and the only real potential drawback is Kevin Mawae being old as dirt.

All things considered, the Texans have more pieces in place to do damage on offense. LenDale's presence has me tipping the scales in Slatons favor.

Would anybody really be upset if they had to settle for one because the other is gone in a fantasy draft? Probably not.
