Time for the Texans to go shopping. And maybe they can wrap up some of their players into some longer term deals, such as Dunta Robinson.

NFL salary cap up $12 million over last season

NEW YORK - The NFL’s 2009 salary cap will be nearly $12 million more than last season after a final adjustment brought the total to $128 million.

The salary cap is technically $123 million for 2009, an increase of about $7 million from last season, as set out in the collective bargaining agreement.

About $4 million in cap room was added when a “cash-adjustment mechanism” was triggered after spending on players fell below 59.5 percent of the league’s total revenue in 2008, NFL spokesman Greg Aiello told The Associated Press on Friday.

The league informed teams Wednesday that a final adjustment this month will give clubs $947,000 of additional cap room. The money would have carried over to next season, but this is the final salary cap year under the current CBA.

I'm not sure I want Dunta back if he keeps acting the way he has and wants the money he keeps demanding. I'm not sure what kind of season he'll have this year. It wouldn't surprise me to see him have a great one and all, but if he just has a good one and then he still wants top CB money, then I've got no problem letting him walk. No need to handicap ourselves to a player unless he's worth all that money, and Dunta has also had some serious injuries. I'm more worried about signing a guy like Owen Daniels and Demeco Ryans and possibly getting a stud free agent from somewhere else.

If Dunta wants top five CB money, he better start playing like one, anything short of what he accomplished his rookie season...I want him out unless if he is willing to take a pay cut.

If it were up to me, I look at what a player has done for us throughout his career as a Texan and not just one or two seasons which in this case Dunta hasn't done much but provide this "prescence" on our team. Guys like DeMeco, OD, and above all AJ deserve to get paid because theyv'e made a positive impact on our team and proven there worth as All-Star players.

Does anyone else find it ironic that a league that is thriving so well that it must raise it's salary cap is laying off lower paid workers and reducing pension plans due to the economic crisis?

This type of overreacting (at best) and opportunistic greed (at worst) by healthy companies makes the current employment/money crisis just a little bit worse.

Good point, I don't understand why the NFL has to cut back and why some successful franchises have to cut back as well such as the Colts and baseballs overrated Yankees who spen't a huge sum on two big time FAs (who are more and more looking like busts) and then turn around and ask the state for help building there new home-run friendly ballpark.
 
That is basically what Keith at inthebullseye.com has been projecting and people have been including in the cap discussions which have happened. So this doesn't open up any new room.

Keith has the Texans with $14.4 million in cap room, prior to signing the rookies. With the Texans allocated $4.6 million in the rookie salary pool, that leaves around $10 million in cap space.

What to do with that cap space? Actually, signing Dunta long term would likely reduce his cap number of nearly $10 million. And I really think this one year deal is in the Texans best interests. I don't want to see this turn into another Dunta thread, but I still believe that the Texans should waive their ability to tag Robinson in 2010, with the stipulation that he participate in all team activities and play in a minimum of 12 games. If Dunta has a great year, re-sign him to a big contract. If not, why keep him around in 2010 and waste the cap space? It's a win/win for both sides, and the type of move a smart GM would make.

I would like to see the Texans spend some of that cap space to re-up DeMeco Ryans. Even if they can't agree to terms on longer deal, the guy should get a $5 million or so bonus for 2009, just on good faith. I don't think it's right that a couple of ex-Lions brought in as backups should earn more than Ryans. Much less that Antonio Smith should get a signing bonus twice as much as DeMeco's entire 4 year contract, before playing a down for the Texans. Come on Texans, do the right thing.

its a win-win if you assume dunta wants to come back here. personally i dont want to waive that 2010 tag cos if dunta has a great year it'll be a haynesworth situation (get a boatload of money off a good team) with us playing the titans

That's a little short-sighted. Dunta doesn't have to sign his franchise tender until Week 10. I doubt he would want to miss those 600K/week checks. But, he could. The CBA has given him that leverage. What's the point of franchising a player, and getting only half a season? Just so you can have the right to make the same mistake in 2010? Of course, the Texans could remove the tag. But, that means they wouldn't have Dunta's services for 2009 and beyond. That doesn't make sense, either.

actually agreeing to the waiver is the short sighted move. we all know dunta isnt going to wait till week 10 to sign. he'll miss OTA's which should be no real loss to an experienced player like him who looks after his body. he'll play all 16 games injury permitting. he's told kubiak that as well.

just as an aside has any player ever sat out till week 10?
