Josh McDaniels

I have always had the gift of being able to read people. I talk to you for 2 mins and I have you pegged most times.

I had never heard of Mike Tomlin when the Steelers hired him. I thought they were rolling the dice. Then I saw his press conference...wow..you could see this cat had IT. Some people have winner written all over their face. Tomlin's got it too. I was pumped and I hate those guys.

I got 2 mins of Coach Josh today...lol...was Lane Kiffin busy? Good luck with that Denver. If I was JC I'd be sellng my house too.

Sorry but Coach J ain't got it. He's in way over his head and will not make it this ride.

I don't understand a guy that wants to blow up a team so much

1. Switch the offense to the spread

2. Switch the defense to the 3-4

3. Trade the best player on the team

Granted Mike was a fossil that wasn't going to win anything anymore but McDaniels is such a dynamic shift

And THAT is why this team is cratering, and why Cutler wants out.

I'll say it again: You don't demolish something that was nearly a contending team, with maybe the primary "need" being some defensive help that can assist the offense. Outside of RB, what did that offense do to get scrapped for a whole new offense style? Their WRs and TE did a great job, the QB did a great job. Oh, it worked in New England...and they are Gods. I forgot.

Throw out all the "Cutler is a cry baby" stuff. He might be the smartest cat in the room, when you break it all down.

I guess if you were with the Patriots, you are incapable of having a bad idea or of handling things poorly. There's some major ego going on with former Patriot coaches who become head coaches. They're making Bill Belichick look bad. Weiss is floundering, Crennel is bye-bye, Mangini got canned and is now directing the mighty Browns, and McDaniels isn't off to a very good start.

LOL. What a mess.

Gary Kubiak, Shanny Jr., and Gibbs look like HOF coaches for how they took our 2-14 team and got them to 8-8 for two straight years. Lots of tweaking, but you had the sense that they were doing it the right way. Heck, they even allowed David Carr an extra year. And they allowed Richard Smith to finish out the season.

Maybe NOT pushing the big red button all the time (or as the first option) is a good way to go?

And I think the "Denver South" label the Texans got tagged with can finally die. They ain't got nothin' in common with that staff.

I think that this is what the owner wanted.

He probably wanted to get as far away from the Shannahan Broncos as he could. Probably trying to re-invent the team.

I look at that the other way.

The Pats under Belly-Czech have been a dynasty. The coaches that have left there have not done well.

Maybe sneaky ole Bill really is that much of a mastermind. Maybe he really is that good.

Kinda scary, really.

I haven't been impressed with McDaniels, either. Like Roc mentioned, Mike Tomlin sounded like a head coach from the first press conference after he was hired. McDaniels, on the other hand, just seems unprepared and a bit arrogant. I would not be surprised if he never has a winning season in Denver before he's eventually fired.

If that happens, I wonder if people will start to shy away from the fruit of the Belly-Czech coaching tree.....

I completely agree with you that it is foolish to mess with 1 and 3. However, the Denver D was pretty poor all season long. I don't think switching to a 3-4 was a bad idea at all. Some of their players are more suited to a 3-4 style anyway (such as Elvis Dumervill and Jarvis Moss).

The real problem with the D was that Shanny's record as a talent evaluator was somewhat suspect, especially on the defensive side. Outside of Champ Bailey and Dumervill there were no other D players who could really be considered starters. If you are going 3-4 you can keep Bailey and Dumervill and then supplement. If you stay 4-3, you keep Bailey and Dumervill and then supplement. If JM wanted to go 3-4, not a big deal.

Now, his handling of the offense and JC has been quite poor.

Some points that embelish some of our other posters' thoughts:

Why Josh McDaniels Got The Job and The Reasons Why The Broncos Are Doomed

First, the main reason he was hired was the success of the New England Patriots and more specifically Bill Belichick. That combined with the intelligence and artfulness of the way they conduct business is very attractive to an owner................

.................The main reason he was hired was because of the incredible success of Mike Tomlin. Mike Tomlin was hired as one of the youngest coaches in league history by the steeler because they sensed when he walked into that interview, that this man would instantly earn the respect of the players just on the merit of his presence.

They realized that Mike Tomlin was incredibly intelligent, knowledgeable about the game and he was a natural leader of men. These are three attributes which seem simple enough, but are very very rare and exist in only the best of coaches in any sport.

The most important thing Mike Tomlin did was keep the defensive coaching staff intact. Even though he was a Cover 2 defensive coordinator in Minnesota, he realized the success of Dick LeBeau and the defense of the Steelers.

He did not try to put his imprint on the defense because he was intelligent and was not insecure in his leadership abilities. He only tried to build and give a new dimension to the defense. He gradually earned the respect of his players and led his players to the championship in his second year. He also brought none of his players from Minnesota or Tampa Bay to get more familiar with the system

Now compare this to Josh McDaniel's conduct. First, he fired the offensive staff from the second rated offense in the NFL, when they did not have a solid or healthy running back. Second he released a few players who were leaders and who played positions like longsnapper and signed them from New England.

This yearning for familiarity, because he was insecure in the respect he could earn from his players, led to his biggest mistake yet......................
There are other good comparisons in this piece. However, bottom line, McDaniels has apparently lulled himself into a false sense of competence.

I wonder what guys like Parcells and Walsh imparted to their students that Belicheat isn't?

I will be interested to see how the spread offense works in the NFL without Randy Moss and Wes Welker

I think it's more about Tom Brady than anything else.

With Drew Bledsoe at the controls, that team wouldn't have won the first Super Bowl. Fate dealt them a pretty nice hand, IMO. Of course, who's to say that they wouldn't have promoted Brady the next season...but still, he was an unknown guy--a low draft pick, nonetheless--and he changed that franchise's entire future.

I think there is too much arrogance and conceit and vanity associated with the Belichick coaching tree. They rode the escalator to the top, and now they think they should have their own gold-lined elevator and penthouse suite at the top of the building.

Color me VERY unimpressed with what this tree of coaches has done so far.

So the latest with Cutler is that he has forfeited 100k worth of workout bonus since he has been a noshow at the Bronoco Facilities.

So, one of the Denver radio hosts tried to make sense of this situation with Cutler. He basically said that if you could improve the Bronco D and allow the Offense to fall a bit they would be a playoff team. By trading Cutler and getting a decent Starter QB, they could address the D right now and turn it from crappy to average(my terms not his). By doing this and having a decent starter(ie one that doesn't turn the ball over but does just enough) they can compete right now. He thought that with a strong Oline, good RBs, and a avg D, a decent QB would be more than enough to steer the Broncos.

I understand his thinking and the theory ofwhy you would trade Cutler(as you get the most back in return). But Cutler is also a cheap option right now. Unless you can get a young Lawrence Taylor in return, it seems a bit foolish to me to trade your best player with the hope of getting enough back in return. Unless you can bilk a team out of something ridiculous (like 2 first rounders+ starters+ additional picks) it just does not make sense to me.
