My picks for Texans through 3 rounds

Texecutioner

We did a Mock Draft on another board that went 3 rounds and I picked for the Texans. Here were my picks through the first 3 rounds. Of course I made these picks considering what was on and off the board.Tell me what you think.

1. Aaron Maybin DE for Penn State
2. Sean Smith CB/S from Utah.
3. Zach Follet OLB from California

I really like Maybin a lot, but Brown was available, and if I could have done that pick again I would have taken Brown instead of Maybin, but I still would be very happy with Maybin and I like the pick.

Sean Smith is a very versatile player and many scouts project him to be a safety in the NFL even though he played CB in college. I liked him with this pick because we have a need at both positions and he could possibly be interchangeable depending where our strengths and weaknesses both are starting out in the season.

Zach Follet is a play making LB that can rush the passer very well and can play in coverage. I really liked this pick in the 3rd round and thought it was great value there.

I think the combine will decide the pecking order of the DE/OLB guys . If Maybin shows up with some bulk and strength and runs well then we got a deal . A 250 lb Maybin running a 4.6 plus Sean Smith would be a good start .

In the third I would be tempted ... if there ... to take one of the C\G type players we saw in the senior bowl . Overall a nice effort and now do the 4th - 7th .

I maybe should have picked Brown instead of Maybin with that first pick looking back on it in hind sight now, but I'm happy with Maybin.

Sean Smith seemed like an interesting player to have considering how we need a S really bad and could easily use another CB. He could most likely play either one depending on how well Molden, Reeves, and Bennett are playing going into the season and if Dunta is back. If we used him at CB he could be very good for depth and maybe be better than anything we have other than Dunta. Then if he were to make the safety transition he just might be ready to go before the season, you never know.

Follet just seemed to be a really good guy sitting right there than could help our pass rush and also in coverage. Maybe not the best tackler, but a play maker that could make a lot of BIG plays.

In reality Brown will probably be gone. Some, like http://www.walterfootball.com/ have Brown going in the top 10. So Maybin is probably the more realistic pick at this point in time. Also, I have a feeling Smith will try to work his magic again with a trade down in the 1st to get more picks. Don't know this for sure, just a hunch.

I really like Smith in the 2nd. I just hope he's there when we pick for real. He seems to be quietly moving up a lot of draft boards. Follet could be a good selection too. JMHO!

Well I had my mind on either Smith or Luis Delmas in the 2nd which I would like as well, but since Smith seemed like a guy who could play CB or S, I figured that he might have more value to what we need or may end up needing. What do you think of Delmas?

I have a feeling that there will be a run on them at the end of the first round. The Wolf in New England has never passed up a chance to make his o-line more tenable with top end talent. Acouple of these guys can cover three position very well and the right tackle spot in a pinch. That saves roster spots. That saves cap mobility. That is coveted right now in the NFL. There's going to be a run on the centers.

If Everette Brown was available in the 1st when you picked, I'd much rather have him than Maybin. Sean Smith is a really good pick in the 2nd and we've already got one guy named Zach at the LB position so I'd pass on him and would rather have a really good RG in the 3rd round.

What about having another Zach on the other side?

From what I've read/heard he's very good, and his practice/play during Senior Bowl week has him shooting up the the draft boards. WalterFootball now has him as the #1 Safety prospect ahead of William Moore, and likely to be picked in the late 1st or early 2nd round. He seems to be a real team leader and high character guy as well as a very good player. Could be a good pickup for the Texans if he's there in the 2nd, or if we trade back in the 1st. JMHO!

Agree with you on this one. He brings a very aggressive presence back at the S position which is something that we haven't had before. Somebody posted that Delmas and Reed had the same height and weight at this point in their careers. I am interested to see what he does in the combine. He is really aggressive and had a Polamalu type of reckless tackle when he cut down a RB. It would be amazing if we traded down and picked up another 2nd and both Alphonso and Delmas were there when we picked in the 2nd. I don't see that happening as both guys will continue to climb. William Moore has been disappointing, but I hope somebody reaches on him and Delmas falls because that would be a great pick up for our secondary.

Love it. You're hired Mr GM.
Wow. That's what I was going to say.

Orakpo, Brown, Maybin. If the Texans can come away with one of these guys, I'd be ecstatic. Sean Smith has the look of a playmaker. And Follett is one of the top blitzing LBs in the draft. Well done.

Thanks Lucky. I was happy with the picks if I must say so myself. Maybe I'll email them to Kubes. Lol! :fans:

Well right now it looks like a reach. Maybin I'm pretty sure you could stand up first and second down at the Sam. All of theses guys the key is their hips and feet. Can they flip their hips turn and run with the elites in the NFL. Cone drills will find out next month.

I'll be surprised if San Fransisco doesn't gobble Maybin up.

Speaking of Zac....anyone noticed the high end MLB from Pitt Scott McKillop , no one is talking about him. Just kinda reminds me of when Zac Thomas came out. Too small too short....all he does is tackle people. I wonder how far McKillop will fall ?

McKillop looked good during the senior bowl week, good pick up in the later rounds.

Doesn't San Fran have Manny Lawson ? To me they're the same player .

was not Amobi Okoye supposed to be Mario's McCargo? or the # 1 need is DE insert _______ ________ player to be Lawson? all pieces to enhance Mario Williams big play ability :)

If Raji gone and no trade down:
1.Vontae Davis CB 2. Robert Ayers DE 3. Gartrell Johnson RB with power 4. Rashad Johnson a true FS. I can live with that.

Well if Okoye fooled me he fooled me. IRC. I was really high on Levi that year. But Okoye dominated the senior bowl practices. and Maybe that's why now, I'm a little cautious with Raji. I had no problem with the pick at the time. Everything said he was worth the pick.

I'm looking at the tweeners and Ayers, and I'm thinking why not two ? One at Linebacker and one on the end.

Still Say Sidbury can stand up at the Sam. We'll find out next month. And I think Earl that's why Maybin will go to San Fransico. I think he's one of the quickest guys in the draft. Just going off of the tape. The guy covers a lot of ground. the key to that '85 Bears team was Wilbur Marshall. If Maybin runs what I think he'll run and if Singltary has any say about it, there's no way he'll pass that kind of quikness up. I don't care who's on their roster.

as most people know, here, Levi Brown was my guy in the 07 draft. less than two years removed from the draft he is in the Superbowl. looking forward to the match-ups with Pittsburgh, quick/powerful OLB's. speed on the edge was a weakness, similar to Oher this year. more than anything its his toughness that elevates his play, he is the one guy on that line that just doesn't get beat & Grimm has made him only better in the skills department :)
