92 Zgonina, Jeff DT 6-2 290 Purdue Cut

So I would cut somewhere around 24 guys. I think I pretty much killed the P/S guys. Yes I did cut both QB's. Sage is worthless and Schaub is bruised fruit. I would sign a guy like Garcia and draft a guy to sit behind him.

All the other major holes can be filled through FA and draft.

I'd keep Barber and cut Myers.

And no, I don't cut either QB. That's just silly.

Not understanding the reason for cutting Okam at this point.
(and not because I like UT, but he isn't costing the Texans much money at this point)

To Play Devils advocate and to joke around a bit

Moulden could get cut because he can't beat out Faggins or Reaves LOL
:tease:

Bullman is costing peanuts and seems to have a good motor.. I am not sure about a pass rushing specialist (last I heard that term thrown around heavily with the name not associated with Mario Williams was Babin)

Schuab is schedule to earn $7 million next year. He was basically signed to a 3 year, $20 millon contract. The option is after the 2009 season. Schaub won't be cut.

The Texans would also be stupid to cut Rosenfels. He's obviously not a starter. He's an average QB. Who exactly would we have should we cut Schaub and Rosenfels?

QB is not our biggest problem on this team. It's a ridiculous idea to suggest cutting both of them.

Step away from the Limburger. Please proceed to heavily ventilated area.

The fumes must be impairing your thought process.

If Dreessen continues to improve his blocking skills, the Texans might decide to part way with Bruener.

In that case, I think they will take a long look at Clark Harris.
Guy was pretty good at Rutgers.

Not as fast as OD in the 20 yd shuttle or the 3-cone drill at the combine when he weighed 261 lbs. But he has good hands and seems to understand the game, and at 6'6 he should be a nice target.

Being a long snapper may help his cause.

You're cutting a lot of good players and a lot of young players that might develop into good players. At least let them come to training camp and prove they don't deserve a spot on the team before getting rid of them.

I don't know, I might be crazy. But I think QB is a big problem on this team.
But we will likely keep Schaub 'cause of the contract.

But Sage isn't good enough of a QB to lead a team deep into the play-offs, IMO. So why have two question marks??

As long as Schaub stays, we probably won't sign a proven veteran like Garcia.

Who's out there in the mold of Collins and Warner?
Otherwise, we might just draft another QB and let him compete with Brinks.
I haven't had enough looks on that guy to write him off yet.

Agree!
Many of those one-to-two year guys most likely end up in our TC next year, where they will have to earn their stripes once again.

explain to me why you would cut bulman? I actually think he's done a better job than some of the other folks on the DLine minus mario of course. As far as stats show I would think he'd be one of the leading sackers on the team behind mario with his 3 sacks and playing in 10 games and thats not starting. Travis Johnson, Amobi Okoye, and Anthony Weaver only equal up to 1 Sack combined for the year. If you're going to cut anyone I don't think I'd have Bulman on the chopping block, I don't see him going anywhere for a while especially with his motor.

If we sign Garcia does he come with the wheelchair too? LOL

We would have to draft a QB rather than sign an old fart and that means grooming a young kid to take over. If our offensive line would have kept cheap shotting defensive lineman away from Schaub's knees no one would even suggest cutting.

I doubt even iron man Manning could have stayed on the field after the shot Schuab took to the side of his knee. Gimme a break.

I'll play your game:

20 Slaton, Steve * RB 5-9 201 West Virginia 1st Keep
64 Studdard, Kasey G 6-2 303 Texas 2nd Keep. We don't have a lot of interior line depth. This changes if we do draft a C and a G or pick them up in FA.
51 Thompson, Chaun LB 6-2 255 West Texas A&M 6th Keep. Has shown enough to me to warrant one more year as long as his contract is nice.

I think this is a more realistic version of the one in the original post.

Let me address the QB cuts first.

Here is my take on Schaub. He is fragile. Any way you slice it. Last year he was only sacked 18 times and lost half the season. This year he has been sacked some where around 18 and has lost a month plus his stomach virus and I think he was hurt again at some point before that. He just can't stay healthy. Not to mention he is in competition with Sage for the human INT. Schaub is a decent QB. Not a good one, just a decent one. He really does not rise up and comand a game. He manages. Which normaly I would be OK with but the health issues concern me.

Sage, well, is Sage. He got scared after the Indy game and the gunslinger inside died. He used to go out and throw an INT and then come back and make a play. Now its just INT's with no plays. He is also a QB that has not risen above and taken control. This was his one shot at being our starter and failed. Kube has him as a manager and that is not him. Sage no longer has a place on this team.

Also keep in mind who the FA QB's are going to be. Warner (I think he stays put in Arizona) Garcia is a WC guy, and Cassell. Interesting thing about Cassell is what happens if they do keep him and trade Brady? Ask Bledsoe if you dont think the Patriots would do something like that. Or ask Joe Montana if teams dump there franchise QB's for well performing back ups. I would still pick up a guy like Garcia and groom a guy from the draft. Garcia is an up grade over what we got now. He is a proven winner and has been in big games.

Bulman is going to be a victom of numbers. As it stands Cochran has out played Weaver making him the would be starter on the other side of Mario if not for the injury. Going into the draft we will use a high round pick on a DE. This will make Cochran the #3 DE. If I were the Texans I would also use a low round pick on another DE and possibly pick one up in FA. I just don't think Bulman has shown me enough to keep him around for yet another year.

Okam just does not have a motor and has been IA most of the season Unlike Molden who at least gets to play on Special Teams. I dont see it. There are going to be plenty of big boys in FA and the draft that can take Okams bench riding selfs spot on the team.

As far as our Safeties go, we are in big big trouble. I think, and may be wrong, but both Fergason and Wilson only signed one year deals. Demps keeps getting put on the IA list (take the hint), Harrison is Mr. Invisible. The only one that I cut which I had to really think about is Barber. Good special teams player but he reminds me more of CC Brown than Atwater. Barber may make the list but look for the Texans to use a high round, possibly a first, on a Safety.

Keep in mind that next year we are drafting 7 new Texans and picking up a slew of FA's, be it big signings or small signings. NFL stands for Not For Long for a reason.

I'll play your game:

Bong,

I like your's much better. However, I'd like to modify the responses a little. I'm going to say a player is a lock if I wouldn't consider moving them for anything less than a blockbuster trade.

Words about cutting players

The problem is your cutting a lot of players who are just finishing up their rookie years, and have virtually a nil impact on the salary cap. Cutting Schaub and Sage in the offseason would mean that we HAVE to sign somebody like Garcia or else we are completely boned. That means we're having to overpay. For a 37 year old. No.

Cutting almost all of our safeties means that we will have to hit on the one safety we will probably draft, and then we'll have to go out and find even more guys in FA. Probably about halfway through the offseason we will be scrambling to sign anybody who is a warm body.

If we draft a DE I still don't see Bulman or Cochran getting cut. We won't have enough depth.

You can't just cut every player that you don't like because sooner or later you're just going to be picking over other teams practice squads for players that will be much more inferior in terms of talent.

I hear ya and understand your view point. My opinion is if low round rookies have been unable to make a name for themselves at this point in the season then I don't see them returning next season. Mainly cus we are going to have an entire group of low round rookies next year that will be on our team looking to make a name for themselves. And that is not including the UDFA's that we will bring in.

As far as bringing in warm bodies to play safety, that is exactly what we have done for the last 3 years. Wilson? Furgason? Demps? All players that were cut and all players were not resigned to there teams for a reason. CC Brown is only on the team this year cus we tried to get a second round pick by tendering him. He was only signed to a 1 year deal. He won't be back either. There are a lot of people who thought Earl would not have been cut either.

Well last year we had to bring in Demps due to Glenn Earl not being able to play and none of the other fill-ins being worth anything. The year before we had safety play, but it was unspectacular. Currently, if they keep Wilson (And maybe Ferguson, but he's pretty old and could be one injury away), Barber, and Demps and draft a guy, they won't have to throw the drafted guy into the fire so quickly. I think that Brown might be back, but even so, Wilson has so far outplayed everybody enough that he warrants a return to TC. If he starts demanding boatloads of money, then I could totally see cutting him, but for right now it doesn't look like the best of ideas. And just because Demps played semi-decently last year, and then horribly this year doesn't mean Wilson will suffer the same fate.

Also, a lot of times later round rookies end up developing after a few years in the league. This is good because their contracts are tiny in comparison to signing an FA that would be somewhat serviceable. I think the reality of the situation is that Smith (GM, not DC) is going to try to unload some of the larger contracts (Green, Weaver, Greenwood come to mind) and maybe sign one FA who is actually in their prime and may cost a penny or two. After that it'll be more cast-offs and low to mid-tier guys hoping that something sticks.

Hopefully the Ahman Green contract taught Smith that overpaying for older players rarely works out.

Season is on its way out and we have seen pretty much all our current players are going to give us. So based on performance, who would you keep or cut?

8 Schaub, Matt QB 6-5 234 Virginia 5th Cut. Is this not his option year? You need to be on the field to help your team win games

51 Thompson, Chaun LB 6-2 255 West Texas A&M 6th Cut.

So basically, you cut out our best option at quarterback,
our "diamond-in-the-rough" DT, our Special Teams Captain,
a handful of really good special teams players, and defensive line
depth.

Were you one of those people calling for Jacoby to get cut during
preseason on these boards? Thank God Kubiak/Smith/The Coaches
have the ultimate say on these "cuts."

Isn't there a Madden '09 Forum or a fantasy football forum that these huckleberries could be at?... Oh yeah, try houstontexans.com!

I'd keep Barber and cut Myers.

And no, I don't cut either QB. That's just silly.

You guys are just going to have to get use to this.....some guys are there for the locker room. You should of figgured that our when they released Maddox and kept Jeff Zngonia. Faggins isn't going anywhere and niether is Breuner unless Bruener decides to retire....not forced out mind you, but retires.

Myers is exactly what they want, and mind you now no one has banged for a young front line center over the last three years harder than I have, between the twenties. And when Kubiak locks in on guys, veteran guys, they ain't going anywhere.

Take the offensive production, gotta take the rest of the package also. One captian. Gary Kubiak. and Gary Kuibak doesn't screw over loyal veterans.... at least he hasn't yet. I would of cut Green in September....and Criss Taylor out of camp. They are still both on the roster last time I checked.

You're cutting a lot of good players and a lot of young players that might develop into good players. At least let them come to training camp and prove they don't deserve a spot on the team before getting rid of them.

Yeah you cultivate two young DL guys and after you'ver pampered them and paid them for two years...just when they start producing....you're going to turn them loose to Jeff Fischer and Jack del Rio for a hunder buck waiver wire tag ? Ah no.

97 Okam, Frank * DT 6-5 342 Texas 1st Cut. You cant beat out Travis Johnson and the guy who was Jesus' playmate in day care? Really? How bad are you?

Travis has had a knee two years running, and they currently can't stop a fourth and short. They're one for twelve in third and short on the goal line. You just cut the bigest guy we have....wow. Just wow. Go back to the Madden.

I'd hate to think what the Texans record would be without such a great locker room. :sarcasm:

Concur.
How about this radical idea.
Let's see who we draft and who is available on the F/A mkt before we start wholesale slicing and dicing.
Now if this is only a PREDICTION, I have no problem with it. In fact, I agree with some of the folks you have hitting the road. But if this is what you'd DO if you were GM-for-a-Day, before camp, before F/A "season", before the draft...
I dunno....
No QBs...
Only a couple of safeties (you do know we seem to lose 2-3 every year, right)....
thinning out what depth we have in both front lines...
Cutting guys that McSmithiak point to as shining examples of how to be a "Pro" in this league...
No hint as to who you'd bring in for replacements...

Charley, is that you?
:)

Its just a prediction.

I smell epic fail from the OP's post. no epic fail would be a major understatement. Super duper epic fail X infinity suits it more.

Maybe he's an LS looking for work. How many of those gauld dern LSers do ya realy need there ?

I would keep Harris & cut Pittman. A good blocking TE (Which is what he was in college, Rutgers I believe). Could be Breuners replacement when he retires.

Schaub isn't getting cut nor should he.

One thing this post does is make me appreciate Nick Ferguson. Brandon Harrison has not impressed this season, we really do need a good young safety in the worst way.

I wouldn't mind seeing Weaver and TJ on the roster next year, as long as they weren't eating up significant cap space, like they are now, and were used as backups in the rotation.

Care to restate your opinion now? I just love it - on the road, 6 friggin degrees, a minute thirty left, 4 weeks from a torn knee ligament, and someone rises up and commands the team. I'm not delusionsal, and don't think Schaub is Peyton Manning. Look at Matt's passer rating - he's better than most starters in the league this season; as a matter of fact, he's # 6 in the NFL and ahead of both Mannings so far this season. :fans:

Its time for Weaver to go. We need a young speedy pass rushing DE opposite Mario. Weaver is a good team player but good thing I'm not the coach. Travis Johnson stays....he plays with attitude and tenacity. Jury is out on Reeves. Reeves might need need surgery to learn how to keep that head on a swivel. lol

Season is on its way out and we have seen pretty much all our current players are going to give us. So based on performance, who would you keep or cut?

So I would cut somewhere around 24 guys. I think I pretty much killed the P/S guys. Yes I did cut both QB's. Sage is worthless and Schaub is bruised fruit. I would sign a guy like Garcia and draft a guy to sit behind him.

All the other major holes can be filled through FA and draft.

Good idea, just cut half the team. Why not mail this into McNair/Smith/Kubiak? I'm sure they need a goo laugh..lmao. You probably would not get ridiculed to much if you hadn't cut Matt Schaub. Lemme guess...you are a disgruntled David Carr guy.lol Just kidding man your opinion is as good as any. I don't agree with most of your post but it was pretty entertaining.

Schaub won't (and shouldn't) be cut. Next year is his third season, the option to keep or cut can't be exercised until after next season.

Schaub, 25, will earn roughly $20 million in the first three years of the contract.

After the first three years, the Texans must pay Schaub a $10 million option bonus in March 2010 to trigger the final three seasons of the contract, or he becomes a free agent.

Linkage: Schaub's new deal with Texans finalizes trade

THe only major cuts we need to make are Weaver, Faggins, Greenwood, Chris Brown, Ahman Green, travis johnson, Bruener & Meyers.

why post this thread now? news flash the Texans just beat the Packers in Green Bay....three straight wins in a row why....why....why.....:crying:

Until I see a DT that can beat him out I think TJ will remain with the team. IMO, he's still presently the best DT on the roster. Okoye has been an Olinemen's ragdoll more times than not. I don't think TJ's the answer by any means, but I've yet to see a DT on the roster that is.

I agree on Meyers. Although, I think he'd be kept for depth.

IMO the only way we should keep weaver is if we keep him inside as a DT, b/c that's 1 thing he is good at, holding up his man & not giving up ground.

& Okoye might be a ragdoll now but it's only his 2nd year he's very young & still has time to turn it around. TJ is still a ragdoll 4 years in. Yesterday, on Ryan Grant's TD, Okoye was up the field & just missed Grant by a step. TJ got pushed back onto the Lb level & was never in the play to begin with; he's had more than enough time to "get it", he's just not that good & it's time to move on.

doesn't surprise me, Casserly & co. missed on more draft picks than they hit on anyhow.

Okoye shot a gap and missed and yes, TJ was blown off the ball. If you want to find individual plays, I'd bet you'd find more positive plays from TJ than any other DT at this point.

Again, like I stated above. I'm not on the TJ bandwagon. I just think he's the better DT right NOW.
